"Maybe we two could keep together," Moonshine whispered. "I would so like a friend. When I'm alone, I think of my foal always and I cry for her. I probably won't ever have another; by the time I leave here, I'll be too old."

 

The earth pony mare smiled, as tho this meshed with what she thought. "That's the sound their claws make on the wood," she said. "I can keep them away, but only if I touch seven different colours. Sometimes there's not enough and that's when they come and speak to me. I'm Rowan, by the way."

In time, a nurse came to Vinyl's room. She was pale blue with a dark pink mane and tail, and her name was Poppy. She smiled at Vinyl. "Would you like to come to the common room today, Vinyl?" she asked. "It's not good to stay inside your room all the time. Dr Glory asked me to look after you, she's so busy today but she says she'll come to see you tonight before you go to bed."

In time, a nurse came to Vinyl's room. She was pale blue with a dark pink mane and tail, and her name was Poppy. She smiled at Vinyl. "Would you like to come to the common room today, Vinyl?" she asked. "It's not good to stay inside your room all the time. Dr Glory asked me to look after you, she's so busy today but she says she'll come to see you tonight before you go to bed."

Vinyl looked up at Poppy from her bed and smiled at her. "That's good. And yes, I'd like to come out." She got up, put her canvas and paint supplies on the easel, and started following the nurse to the commons. When they got there, she realised she didn't know anyone there. She saw a few familiar faces, but no one she actually talked to or knew. She glanced at Poppy for a moment. "I'm really nervous. I don't know anyone here."

Sunset continued to squirm. She wasn't sure what to say. Still, she knew what it was like dealing with depression, and felt sympathy for the mare, even though she had never even had a boyfriend, let alone a foal.

She couldn't help but wonder if her parents ever wondered if she was still alive.

shunning the thought to the back of her mind before she could choke up, she gave a tiny nod.

"I-I guess... I-it's nice to see when m-mothers care for their foals... A-alive or not..."

 

"Y-you can keep them away?" Sweet Symphony couldn't help but gape in surprise. "I've never been able to keep them away, they just come and go, and stay for far longer than they're gone. I always just end up witing it out or having a breakdown" she blushed for admitting this, but she doubted a breakdown would be news to this mare. Even if she didn't experience breakdowns herself,, she was bound to see them at this Asylum. 

Besides, it was nice to finally have somepony who saw and heard them too.

"Seven different colours, huh? I doubt that's very easy to come by here, given the fact that this is an insane asylum. They don't care much for color combination. Oh, and my name's Sweet Symphony."

Poppy smiled comfortingly at Vinyl. "I can sit with you for a while, then maybe introduce you to a couple of ponies so you won't be alone," she said.

Moonshine gave Sunset a little hug, then let go, worried that she'd given offense. She wanted a friend so much...

 

"Nah, it's not easy," Rowan replied, regretfully. "I don't always find seven colours, tho it's easier when they let me go outside. I've got a flower bed where I planted seven different colours of flowers and sometimes I get to touch them before I go to bed. That protects me til the next day, but it depends. If I melt down, they won't let me go outside at all, and that happens when the shadows get near so you'd think they'd get that it works out better to let me out to touch the colours, right?"

Sunset froze up a bit as she was hugged, and stayed that way when she was suddenly released from the embrace.

Her ears flattened and she wasn't sure how to react. Hugs were scarce for her- she couldn't remember the last time she had gotten one.

"U-um..." she mumbled.

 

Sweet Symphony scoffed. 

"That sounds annoying. You should tell them that it's redundant if you can't go outside because of a meltdown. At any rate, I wish I had a way of keeping them away."

Moonshine dropped her eyes. "I - I'm sorry," she mumbled.

 

Rowan sighed. "I've told them over and over," she said. "But they don't seem to listen. And I know why. It's cuz none of them can hear the shadows the way I can." She smiled. "I'm glad I met you," she said. "Finally, somepony else who can hear them."

Sunset continued to squirm in her little corner. She tilted her head to conceal her face with her mane even more and timidly averted her eyes.

"I-It's okay... I-I was... I was just s-surprised..." she said.

 

Symphony nodded in agreement, smiling.

"Me too. Nopony else has ever understood me. They think I'm just still broken up over the thing that caused me to see them in the first place.... They've had me take antidepressants and other pills, not to mention seeing several psychotherapists and such, but nothing has worked. It's good to finally have somepony to relate to."

Vinyl started walking towards a chair, but stopped in her tracks and looked back to Poppy. "I- I don't know. Maybe this was a bad idea. H- How about we just... I don't know. Go for a walk? Yeah, it's the perfect weather to go out for a walk," she said as storm clouds started to loom overhead

"It's just so alone in here," Moonshine whispered. "Nopony's your friend. The nurses are nice, but they're... distant. I suppose they feel they can't get attached."

 

Rowan said, "Oh, me too. I kicked the last psychiatrist they sent me to, which was one of the reasons why I ended up in here. They just wouldn't listen to me when I said that I kicked him cuz he called me a liar and said that the voices I could hear were all in my head. But I know that the Shadows are there, and since you can hear them too, that proves it."

Poppy smiled, understanding. "I'll fetch an umbrella," she said. "It's large enough to shelter us both from the rain." She was glad to encourage Vinyl to go outside cuz it would be good for her.

Eddie responded with a hopeless sigh "...alright, DOCTAH! .....what do you advise i should do? just sit here and slowly rot to death?"

Eddie sat down on his broken bed and started rubbing his temples "all hope is lost, witch leaves me no choise but to kill all of you" it wasnt clear if he meant it or just said it because of unknown reasons, Eddie started speaking german "zeit wird kommen.....zeit wird kommen....zeit wird kommen" (meaning 'time will come')

Sunset shuffled uneasily.

"I-I'm used to not having friends... M-most ponies where i'm from h-h-hate me for no reason... if the ponies here at least don't treat me like I'm treated there... It might even be better here..."

 

Symphony creased her brow as Rowan mentioned that she had kicked her last psychiatrist. Of course, she didn't approve of violence herself, but she wasn't much better.

"I've never hurt somepony of entirely my own accord, but i get where you're coming from. Sometimes, the Shadows scream at me and overwhelm me... Sometimes to the point where I don't even know what's going on and I'll just do what they say. It kept happening at my most recent appointments, and at my last one, they had me attack my psychiatrist. Apparently that was the final straw for every pony, and they shipped me off here."

((I knew that! XD I was just extremely tired. And this was not the reaction I was expecting.))

 

Vinyl walked out with Poppy, a bit nervous about the weather. One of the few things that could make her crack is thunder. They walked down the path to the forest as the sky continued to darken. A rumbling thunder could be heard in the distance. It wasn't enough to scare her though

"All I can suggest is that you behave yourself and if you do, you will be allowed more privilages," replied the doctor. "Like being allowed to leave your cell and walk around the hospital. It's only those who are considered too dangerous who are confined."

"It can be better here than outside," Moonshine replied. "Everything is done for you; you don't need to look after yourself cuz there are nurses to do everything for you. I work in the laundry mostly and it helps take my mind off things."

Soon the sun was completely blocked out by the clouds, casting a dark shadow over the land. Vinyl looked around the forest and saw, or at least thought she saw, shadows moving around between the trees. A flash of lightning flew across the sky, followed by a loud crack of thunder. Vinyl immediately cowered to Poppy's hooves and cast a spell that told Glory she felt troubled.

"S-sounds like heaven, compared to the last place I was at..." Sunset sighed.

"M-maybe I could w-work with you or something. I don't th-think I'll be able to read or d-draw much, that's what i did before... I-i-if that's o-okay with you..."

"That's fine with me," Moonshine murmured. "I will love to have somepony working with me in the laundry. You'd like it there; it's enclosed and away from other ponies, and the noise from the washing machines is soothing."

 

Rowan nodded, sympathetically. "Yeah, they don't like it when ponies act like that," she said. "But at least it wasn't the other place..."

Vinyl immediately got up and ran over to Glory and hugged her. Tears were streaming down her face. "I- I saw them. The shadows, the ponies, they were there, in the trees... Please take me back. I'd rather be in the commons with ponies I don't know than stay out here."

Eddie slowly rised his head to the doctor "do you consider me violent? NO the question more important is, are you rich? if you are then yes i am violent and i will make it a goal for the year to make you feel that life i a horrible reality....how will i do it? good question, it might include finding your loved ones, relatives, FRIENDS and either cripling them or torment them to the point that they will end up in a asylum themselves, i can twist and turn my craetivity so dont underestimate me"

Glory returned the hug. "Of course," she replied. Turning to Poppy, she said, "Nurse, I will take over for now. Would you like to check up on the wards for the moment?"

 

Poppy nodded. "Of course, Doctor."

 

They went inside, Poppy heading towards the Luna ward and Glory taking Vinyl to the common area.

Sunset nodded. She probably would like it there. 

"Um... Y-you'll have to teach m-me how to do l-laundry," she said. "I-I never learned"

 

Sweet nodded. 

"I heard that they were considering sending me there, after that episode. My mom had to beg them to give me leeway, so I ended up coming  here instead. I'm amazed the psychiatrist didn't press charges, even though I didn't really do anything. She seemed really frazzled."

"Of course I'll teach you," Moonshine said, with a shy smile. "It's so easy... you'll soon pick it up. I'll be so glad to have somepony to help me."

 

"The psychatrist I saw didn't press charges either," Rowan replied. "I think she prefered to just have me put out of the way. Out of sight and out of mind, as the saying goes."

Vinyl followed Glory inside and sat down in a chair by her. "Sorry for taking you away from your work. I just- it was just like an instinct..." After a quick recovery, Vinyl looked around and saw Two pairs of ponies talking together. "Um... W-who are they, if I may ask?"

Glory looked over at the ponies that Vinyl had pointed out. She turned back to face Vinyl and replied, "The first two, well, one is a newcomer to the asylum. Her name is Sunset Sky. She has PSTD so it's nice that she's found somepony to talk to. The other is Moonshine. She's been here for a while, suffering from severe postnatal depression, made worse by her foal dying."

 

Glory sighed. "It's a sad story, like a lot of the stories of patients here," she continued. "Moonshine's parents were worried about their daughter, especially after her husband left her and she tried to kill herself. The other ponies are another newcomer named Sweet Symphony and another long time patient named Rowan. Both hear voices and see things; it's good that they can talk. Unlike the other asylum, we encourage the inmates to socialise. It helps them in the long run."

Sunset gave a small, timid smile of her own, but it wasn't all too visible with her mane in the way.

"O-okay," she replied. she sat there in silence for a few moments.

Suddenly, she realized something.

Why hasn't she asked about my scars?

 

Sweet Symphony nodded again.

"Yeah, it was probably the same with my psychiatrist," she said.

Poppy approached one of the patients who looked troubled. She knew his name was Goldie and thought he might like to talk.

In fact, Moonshine had noticed Sunset's scars, but didn't want to comment on them. She had her own scars; vertical ones on the inside of each foreleg where she had cut herself in her first suicide attempt.

 

"I never stop hoping that I might get out of here," Rowan said. "Tho I know it's not likely."
