"Somepony sent you?" He pondered for a moment, then took the message out of his knapsack once again looking at the emblem. This was all very mysterious, a pony sent to him and an illusive message appearing in his house bearing a lost seal known to few. "Who sent you? It is important that you tell me." He ordered, never breaking his unfeeling expression.

(Oh god, what should I say? Erm...)

 

"Yes, someone sent me. His 'emblem', as he calls it, is kind of like that one on your letter." I said, observing the letter's emblem. "Of course, he never did tell me his name. I guess it's if you tortured me into telling who that pony was. Of course, you wouldn't torture me, would you?"

"I believe that you are, madame, but I could not stand idle." The unicorn stated, bowing his head slightly. Carefully levitating the pack to the ground beside him, he looked inside and saw that the damage wasn't anywhere near as bad as he had expected. 
 
Ignoring the ruined books and parchments he brought out a roll of bandages, separating a length and placing it beside him.
 
"You were correct, quite fine. Still... this may cause some discomfort." He selected the most waterlogged bandage he could find and pressed it against the blooded injury. "The salt in the water will fight any infection." He explained.

"I don't believe that will be necessary my friend." Bardic said, turning to the other pony as he pulled the bandage tight. "Although, perhaps one of you may grant myself a request? I need to find the way to a place called... Can-ter-lot?"

Moonlight Fire gawked at the pony who gave her the bandage. He was incredibly polite, "Thank you," she stated as she felt the salt water sting her wound. Moonlight forced a smile and shifted her weight on the injured leg. It still ached, but she would be fine. As he asked about Canterlot, she realized he must not be from around here.

"I'm not monster." Driftwood responded. "I must leave soon, it's a long way to Canterlot and I need to find out who sent me this message. Any information you have will help me very much". He put the white paper back into his pack "It is a very personal matter, you see. That emblem is not widely know."

Jaeger looked at the pony "Not from around here are yah? Well I heard there was a caravan heading to Canterlot today, and that's were I'm headed, your welcome to tag along if you want....sorry I dont know your name." he said as he turned back to look again to make sure the caravan had not left.

I nodded, understanding. "Well...I might have some information on who sent me, but...I have to see the letter before I do anything or tell you anything about the pony." When the pony said 'The emblem is not widely known' I shrugged. "Well, that's his problem then. But anyways...could I possibly come along with you to Canterlot? There isn't much to do here."

A caravan going to Canterlot? Could she find what she was looking for in Canterlot? Moonlight Fire longingly gazed at the caravan, wondering what could happen if she jumped on. She hadn't found her item anywhere in Ponyville, and Canterlot might be her last hope.

"Think nothing of it. You required assistance that I could provide, there are no need for thanks." Bardic bowed his head again and lifted the pack back onto his back, using his mouth instead of levitating it this time.

"Correct. My name is Bardic Knowledge, at your service." He said to the pair. "I come from... a great distance away. Unfortunately I have lost my companions and the only thing I know of their location is the name of the settlement we were bound for. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated, I know very little of it."

"Come along with me to Canterlot...?" He paused. Driftwood was not a social creature, and his introverted nature caused him to believe he could make it to Canterlot alone and without aid. His more logical side, however, suggested to him that a traveling companion would be beneficial. Safety in numbers and all that.

 

It was unlikely that this pony was an assassin, Driftwood had a small ego, he knew that he was defiantly not valuable enough to be hunted down, what purpose would that serve? The stranger could also be a thief, but Driftwood carried nothing of real value, and barely any bits.

I nodded. "Now look, if I was an assassin, why aren't I wearing, or having for that matter, any swords, knives, et cetera? I also know that you have nothing of value on you, and besides, even if I was a thief, I wouldn't steal from you. I'm too...honest for that." I mumbled, kicking the ground. "But yeah, I'm sure I want to go. I know it'll be treacherous and that we might die, but you need a companion to Canterlot, by the looks of it. Now.." I readjusted my glasses. "Should we go now?"

"I'm sorry you lost your friends," Moonlight said to Bardic earnestly. "I don't know a whole lot about Canterlot. I used to live there when  was a small filly, before..." she trailed off and looked at the sand beneath her. She didn't want the ponies to see the hurt in her eyes.

 

"That's all the information I really have," she said, looking back up.

Driftwood was impressed, it seemed as though Lightning Chaser knew he was trying to find malice in him. "If you want to put your life on the line traveling to Canterlot, fine. I just had to make sure you realise what might happen." He looked onward, the other pegasus he spotted approaching him earlier was conversing with two unicorns, a tall foreign looking one, and a pale mare. He started walking towards them, "Come on, Canterlot is this way. I heard one of these ponies talking about a caravan also."

Moonlight Fire glanced at a brown Pegasus walking towards her. She realized he was one of the ponies she saw before. MORE ponies? Oh great, she thought to herself. Moonlight smiled at the approaching pony. All of these ponies were nice, but she just didn't liked to be social.

Jaeger shook his head "Sorry about your friends, but as for Canterlot I used to be a guard there and I have to go back for business reasons." he said "Like I said the caravan is going there and it's a lot safer than traveling alone that's for sure, but it will be leaving soon and I dont know when it's going to return."

"Well, I'll do anything for my contact, yeah." I stated, planting my hoof in the ground only to quickly pull it out again, feeling immediate pain. "And, yes, I know what might happen...hey..." I sighed as I looked ahead, seeing the other ponies. I then looked at where Drifty was going, then followed him. "Caravan, huh? What did they say about it?" I asked, curious. Is this...his caravan? I hope so..

Any information was a boon for Bardic: remembering details and piecing them together was a special gift of his. "You have my thanks." He said graciously. "It has been a pleasure, please, excuse me."

"Excuse me, this caravan you speak of, it is bound for this Canterlot?" Bardic asked. "If so, might I humbly offer my services in exchange for passage? I have little in the way of payment."

He approached the odd little gathering of ponies, just as he was about to ask them if they knew of a caravan traveling to Canterlot, he caught a glimpse of something familiar to him. Just ahead of the, now larger, group of ponies, there stood a solitary, rather small wooden trailer, the sort a single pony could carry. Within it was a heap of assorted seashells.

 

Now that was very interesting.

 

Driftwood walked past the group and up to the trailer, there was a note attached to it with the Hippocamp seal on it.

DO NOT ARRIVE WITHOUT IT

 

There were the sort of shells Driftwood's caretaker used to collect and export. That's when it hit him.

 

This little group of ponies was the caravan.

 

He turned around and looked at the assemblage.

 

"I think I know where the caravan to Canterlot is." He started, "It's us."

(what an interesting plot twist. Don't worry, I had this sorted out.)
I looked, not really shocked by showed it anyways. "W-Wait...w-we're the caravan?! M-My boss n-never said that we're the caravan! He only said to escort them to Canterlot! Oh wait...that does make sense now..." I muttered, resisting the urge to sit down and think about it.

"Excuse me? We're the caravan?" Moonlight Fire growled, confused. "And why do you think that?" She stared at the group of ponies gathered before her. It didn't make sense, nor did she want it to. Moonlight Fire pawed at the sand with her hooves and saw the rest of the ponies were having a similar reaction.

Jaeger looked puzzled "I was told that I was to protect a caravan not join it." he scoffed "Besides why would they send the cargo like this." he sat down "Well this is a strange turn of events and not a change that I am very much comfortable with at that." he mumbled under his breath .

"I know not of you're dilemma with the ownership of a caravan: surely a caravan consists of those who travel with it?" Bardic wondered to the group, considering if he might be misunderstanding their meaning.

 

"Regardless, I would still travel with you If I might: I can offer my skills, meager as they are."

 

He would need to find some ink first though, and some paper. Ideally a few books on the local flora and fauna but he had realistic expectations.

Driftwood took the cargo note in his mouth and put it on the ground in front of the ponies. "See for yourself," he stomped his hoof above the note drawing attention to it "the signature emblem is the Hippocamp seal, which means it's for me." He looked around at them, giving each a glance as he spoke. "We are all traveling to Canterlot, for different reasons yes, and this is our cargo." He looked serious, more serious than usual that is, "a very clever somepony arranged this meeting, at least two of you have been sent here, one of you by the Hippocamp emblem bearer himself it seems."  He walked back to the trailer filled with shells "Perhaps somepony knew that the rest of you would be going to Canterlot around this time, I can't say I'm sure of anything if I'm honest." He studied the trailer, it was a standard sort, he would carry it there and find out who had done this and why. "I'm not certain of any other caravans in this area destined for Canterlot, but I am sure that we are the Canterlot Caravan you probably all heard of."

"W-Well...sure, this makes sense, but...why are WE the cargo?" I said, planting my hoof into the ground firmly. "Why are WE the cargo when there's millions of ponies out there that'd make much more candidates than us?" I asked, sighing. Why ISN'T it us is a better question...I thought, sighing again.

Moonlight stood dumbfounded as she listened to the stallion. "How could somepony know that I was going to Canterlot? I don't even really talk to anypony," she murmured. There had to be a logical reason for all of this, why she was picked to meet here with everypony else.

Jaeger stood up "All my client told me is that the cargo was EXTRA important an that it was to be kept safe until we reach Canterlot. " he said. "Now how woul this clever somepony know we would all meet here and now, just seems a bit odd to me that's all." he thought
