"Get behind my Cherry! I'll protect you!"

 

 

At first Cherry was frightened, and did step behind the stallion. A moment of silence later, and a small black cat stepped out of the shadows. Cherry stepped out from behind Solar Sentinel and punched him lightly, "Nice going, Sentinel." She snickered, "Good thing I have a royal guard to protect me." She said with a sarcastic tone, but she nuzzled him to show she was joking.

"Hehe..yea. Better safe that sorry." He said, trying to laugh it off. "I wonder where he came from? He's so thin. Here kitty. I'm not going to hurt you. Let's see if we can find you some food." Solar's stomach growled. "And us two while we're at it."

 

"Cherry, what do you want to call him? He seamed frendley enough. Lets bring him with us! What do you say?"

"Oh... Okay then, yeah!"

The stallion smiled at Storm, more than a little pleased - he was relieved that she hasn't decided to leave and go exploring alone: that couldn't possibly end well.

 

"I, uh, appreciate your trust. I won't let you down!" He said, only slightly less awkwardly.

"Oh? What...." Wish was about to answer when she poked her nose through another door. A tremendous smell hit her: sweet and savoury food adorned a huge, circular table in the centre. "You know, I never realised just how hungry I was... want to go in?"

 

She had an idea.

 

"If we block open the door with something, it can't close behind us! What do you think?

At the mention of going into a room, Blaze's eyes began shifting around and he laughed nervously. "Hehe, I uh... don't know if that's such a good idea. I mean, that mare wasn't actually trapped in that room, but what if we can get trapped? I'm just... over thinking this sorry." Blaze had again caught himself thinking the worst, so he tried to plow through the fear. He reached into his neckcloth and pulled out a rather large rock. He placed it against the door, hoping it would be enough in case the worst did happen.

Storm smiled. "Well, then, lets get a move on, soldier!" Storm said jokingly. Storm trotted down the hall to find the garden they've seen earlier, only to actually go in it. She eventually found a few patches of roses and even a statue of two ponies kissing. She gave a slight blush and continued on. "I didn't think the owner of this house would love.. love so much!"

Watching the suspiciously unusual decoration of the house shift tones, something dawned on Scribe:

 

"Funny how there's no creepy paintings or gargoyles or anything... It all seems too normal. You know, excluding the mysterious invitations, collapsing rooms, locked doors and windows..."

 

He wondered about the implications of this as they passed a number of flowers and statues depicting some kind of romantic scene which Storm seemed to slow down for a moment to pass. He gave it a glance but couldn't really see anything special about it: it was kind of sweet, in a way, but nothing to write home about.

"That should do it, see? Now we can't get trapped!" Wish said as she hopped past the rock barring the door and ventured inside: examining the walls, roof and floor despite the food presented on the table.

 

"I can't see anything weird: not that I really know what I'm looking for - it seems safe enough. Anyway: even if we got stuck here, at least there's plenty of food!"

Blaze nodded. "Heh, yea. Well let's eat then. I'm bloody starving." Blaze sat down at the table and looked at all of the food. Most of it was foreign to him, but it all looked magnificent. He made sure to wait until Wish sat down until he started eating, otherwise he would look rude.

Making a final glance around the room, Wish's stomach rumbled - signaling her decision that the room was probably safe enough. She sat down across from Blaze looked over the impressive spread and shrugged with a grin before helping herself.

"This looks amazing, whatever it is!" She beamed. "Scribes a terrible cook, and I guess I'm not much better."

Blaze nodded excitedly. "It sure does look great! I'm not the best cook either, and neither are my mum and dad!" He let out a small chuckle and grabbed the first thing that caught his eye. He took a bite and his diamond eyes grew exponentially large. "This is top! I wish I knew what this was!"

"Mmph!" Nodded the wide eyed mare as she chewed a pastry containing some kind of fruit she had never tasted before and before washed it down with what she guessed was a bitter, dark juice of some kind.

 

"You'd think that if somepony wanted to trap us in here then they would at least give us some indication as to why... as far as I can tell it's as if they just wanted us to have a good time."

Blaze nodded and his ears drooped slightly. "Oh yea I almost forgot. It really is odd that somepony would just lock us in and do nothing more. Really, really odd. But I guess I'll just enjoy my time with you while I can." Blaze noted that his final sentence was an odd one, and he didn't think he had meant to word it like that. Shrugging off the feeling, he found a red fruit that looked almost like a large pill. He ate the fruit, which had a odd taste, and went to grab a lemon. He squeezed the juice onto a very bland tasting food he had before, and took a bite. He was shocked to taste sweetness. His curious mind quickly reacted and he grabbed another lemon. This time however, he took a bite straight from the lemon. "Um, this is a lemon right? It tastes sweet for some reason." It in fact was a lemon, but the fruit he ate before made the lemon taste sweet.

"Huh?" Wish reached out and took one of the yellow lemon-like fruits, sniffed it experimentally and took a bite. The sharp tang was instantly recognisable.

"... Yeah. That's a lemon." She grinned unintentionally as the sour juice twisted at her taste buds.

"Just as... lemony as ever."

 

She watched the stallion for a moment: he looked okay... maybe he had just mistaken an orange for a lemon or something? Regardless, she had no more intentions of biting into recognisably sour fruits when there were so many unusual new foods laying about.

 

With a brief laugh at the situation, she followed up with another small glass of the bitter juice. It wasn't particularly enjoyable at first, but the taste was starting to grow on her.

Blaze furrowed his brow, sure he had grabbed a lemon. He took the lemon that Wish had bitten into and bit a separate spot. He was greeted with another pleasantly sweet taste. He began testing other foods. Limes weren't as bitter, salty foods weren't so salty, the orange pegasus even took a swig of raw vinegar only to be greeted with another sweet taste. "This is really odd..."

Watching Blaze was entertaining, but a little concerning. His newfound appetite was likely to make him ill if he continued to eat the peculiar choices of food that he kept reaching for.

 

"Blaze? That's vinegar: I don't think you should be drinking that." She ventured. "I mean, lemons are one thing but that might make you pretty sick."

Blaze sighed inwardly and sat down. His eyes darting around again as he began to think of why it was happening. "The vinegar tasted sweet... Why did it taste sweet? Why was the lemon sweet? I'm... Oh I'm so confused right now.... But I guess you're right. I probably shouldn't drink vinegar. Heh."

Cherry giggled happily at the cat, and approached it slowly and carefully. "Hey there kitty...now...what to call you..." Candy could not think of a name to save her life, at the moment. "Why don't we just carry him along and work on a name while we walk?" She said as she picked up the feline, and placed it on her back.

"Sounds like a plan to me..." His stomach growled again. "Didn't Scribe mention something about being fed?" He said trying to hide his hunger. "I wonder where the others could have gotten to? Is that a staircase?" He said as the stallion walked to the end of the hall.

"Up or Down?" he said to Cherry. "It's your choice. The kitty had to come form somewhere. I wonder if he knows the way around this big mansion?"

"Are you feeling okay? Do you need to lie down or something?" Wish asked inquisitively. "I feel... okay, and everything tastes normal... Well, probably better than normal but not to that sort of extent."

 

She stood up and walked carefully around to Blaze, cocking her head to the side as she went. "You look okay - you didn't eat something weird did you?"

Blaze shook his head. "Besides the vinegar? No I don't think so... Well I did have this small red berry earlier. Never seen anything like it before.I doubt that would be why vinegar tasted like candy. I'm feeling fine I just... I guess I'm making a big deal out of nothing though..."

"Up sounds better...cause let's be honest...this place is kinda creepy when you don't know where you're going or what's where. Luckily I have my cat-detecting royal guard coltfreind with me." She winked, and began moving up the staircase.

Solar smiled as he fallowed the mare up the stairs, however when she mentioned coltfriend, he almost fell backwards down them.

 

"I...Um....Let's see what up here." He could not think of a proper way to respond. "I have nothing to fear. I have my marefriend? to keep me company through thick and thin in this house."

 

"I'm right behind you Cutie Pie."

She blushed quite blatantly at this remark, but still smirked, and confirmed the bit about being his marefreind.

 

"Y'know, you don't have to be so quiet about the whole 'marefreind' bit." She turned around to him when they reached the top of the stairs. They has reached another hallway. "And don't be afraid to keep up that whole 'Cutie Pie' thing either!" She pecked his cheek. "I don't often get those names."

"Oooh! That's spooky!" Storm said, trotting around the garden, not finding anything suspicious as it is. Even though nopony visited this mansion for hundreds of years, Storm didn't seem to notice that nothing has even a speck of dust or mess on it. She was too excited.

"So... Uh..." Scribe started to speak apprehensively as he trailed dutifully after the mare, watching the walls, floor and ceiling for any sign of anything unusual.

 

"What do you do then Storm? When you're not, you know, stuck here with me." He asked cautiously.

 

'I don't think I've ever heard anyone say something with less confidence...' His mind laughed silently.

"Maybe... I've never heard of any plants that did that though." Wish shrugged, procuring herself another glass of the bitter juice. "To be honest, something like that would have been great on the road: roots and grass get old really quickly when you run out of fruit and stuff."

 

Taking a drink, she looked back at the empty glass, then back at the glass bottle.

 

"Seriously, what is this stuff? It's amazing!" The glass bottle was unlabelled - and now empty as well."Anyway... You all done? I'm... Blaze? Didn't you block the door open?"

 

Stumbling over the door, she found that it opened easily and looked back with a twisted expression. "Nothing here. It's not locked though. Is somepony trying to mess with my head? Because its working!"

"I can't believe a lovely mare like you doesn't get more complements," the stallion said in somewhat shock. "The stallions in Vanhoover must be blind not to have noticed you." as he stomped a hoof, before realizing what he did and slightly blushed.

 

"Um....Right or left?
