Pink smiled at Orion and tried to pay attention.

 

Wow, it must not be easy for him to tell that stuff to a total stranger. But I'm really glad he did. I can see we're gonna be really good friends. I just hope I make some more throughout the rest of the day. When will this day end?

 

Orion noticed that Pink Mist really seemed to listen to all that he had to say. It felt really nice for him to be heard like this. 

 

He then took his seat as the teacher announced the beginning of class. As much as Orion loved history, with this being the first day of school and all, he was not looking forward to all the introductory they had to go through.

 

He wanted the school day to end soon. He needed to relax. He definitely could not wait for lunch.

 

Lunch time should be really nice.  Orion thought to himself.

Game continued to look at his friend in confusion. He had never even seen a snickers bar let alone hear about it. Game slowly shock his head no. He then put his hoof on his chin and began to think.

 

"But i have had a crunch bar, if that helps anything."

Man this day just seems to drag on, Dusty thought to himself.

"So are we just going to ask him about the crash or what?" Dusty asked, "There's lots of evidence leading towards him being the one you hit. Not be able to fly, living near the forest, Dash said his name was Nova."

They arrived at the math class where all the seniors usually attend and lean through the door to try and get him to come out and talk to them

 

"Hey there he is Dusty! psst nova...nova? Dusty you get his attention, i don't think he wants to talk to me."

Hmm, should I try and sneak in the class or just yell for him? Dusty thought to himself.

Dusty began to form a plan in his head, then he had an idea!

"Rainbow, I have a plan to get Nova out of class, we knock and the door and say that he is to go down the principal's office immediately, then we can talk to him out here.

Psst... Orion how long until class ends? I'm bored to death. I want to get to the actual history stuff, not just a boring lecture on the class.

 

Pink just wanted to go to lunch and chow down. Then after that the day always seemed to go faster. At least from her experiences.

"Nova is needed in the principals office."

 

As he finished his sentence the teachers tells Nova to head over there and that he will be told what he missed tomorrow

Nova glared at Rainbow Boom as he made his way to the teacher's desk. Now what does he want? He wondered. As soon as he heard that the principal wanted him, he rolled his eyes and said "What? Principal doesn't believe in the intercom system?" The class snickered as Nova walked out the door, where he saw Dusty standing nearby. "Oh, Dusty, what are you doing here? Did ya figure out what your classes are yet?" He asked.

"No, we just skipped this period and went and got milkshakes and talked to an old friend..."

 

Rainbow Boom begins walking towards the principals office

 

"So were were talking to Rainbow Dash, i assume you don't know her. Well shes the flying team captain at Cloudsdale High and we talked about a little incident that happened 3 years ago out Freshman year when I was still on the Cloudsdale flying team and right before i moved to Canterlot Public."

 

Rainbow Boom starts to look nervous

 

"Everyone got mad when i tried a very hard trick and ended up crashing into somepony just walking through the everfree forest and i just wanted to make sure it wasn't you. I know it probably wasn't i mean what are the chances right? But Dashie also told me it ended his flying career and i know your not a good flyer, so i just wanted to be sure it was not you."

Nova sighed. He knew this was coming, but he didn't think it would happen yet. "You have always looked oddly familiar to me. But I don't remember much of that day. Not that you need to know, but I do know Rainbow Dash, rather well in fact. She's the one that found me in that small school west of the Everfree. She told me that she thought I had great potential, and offered me a spot in the flying team in Cloudsdale. So of course I accepted, and as soon as I arrived I started practicing. But after a few days, I had that accident. I was flying full speed trying to perform my signature move when somepony, I assume it was you, crashed into me because you weren't watching where you were going. I was in the hospital recovering for months." At this point he started to get choked up a bit. "Rainbow was the only one that came to visit me while I was in the wretched place. She was the only one that believed in me. She told me to never give up, adapt and overcome. That's what she would always say to me before she left. I didn't really understand what that meant. I was scarred for life, how was I gonna overcome that? I still don't know what she meant by that."

 

Here Nova paused for a few moments, cleared his throat, and continued. "So after that escapade, I figured it would be wise to lay low and just try to get through high school. Transferred to this school for my final year to try and finish drama-free. But apparently that's not happening." He said the last part quietly. "I wish you'd just leave me alone. You already ruined my flying career, what more do you want from me?" Nova looked sick, as in sick and tired of carrying this around all this time, the vast majority completely oblivious to his plight.

"Yeah, Dashie always did believe in the little guys, i remember one time  we were hanging out and she saw a little purplish filly trying to fly when we were up in Ponyville for a tournament the week before we crashed. She actually went and helped the filly by lifting her up and making her feel like she was flying, made that fillies day no question. I, on the other hand aren't anything like her despite our appearances Nova. I'm afraid i don't feel bad for what happened either, i have one...i repeat ONE soft spot for someone in this world and thats only because shes like a sister to me: Dashie. Other than that, i have no friends or family. I mean if you want to feel better or something head over to Ponyville High and look for a pink pony dancing and singing around there, never did get her name but shes hilarious and Dashie loved her. I think shes a senior as well. Either way bro, i'll be glad to try to help you get in the air again but other than that theres not much I can do for you. Whatever happened back there in Cloudsdale happened for a reason and it all worked out for me. I mean me and Dashie are friends again and we both got to be captains of our teams. Like Dashie said, never give up, adapt and overcome. Also why'd you transfer here, i mean i know you said for a drama free year but why not stay in your quiet quaint little town or wherever you were from.

"Then go away." Nova replied coldly. "Stop wasting my time trying to dig this back up when you clearly don't care. In all honesty I don't know why you're even bothering. You need not continue to poke your nose into my business. First time we met it was a coincidence, and I was happy to keep it that way. Now this is just stupid. If everything worked out great for you, that's just lovely, now get lost. Go back to your own little world out there in the practice field, and quit trying to rub it in my face, because I don't care. Why are you even telling me this? I don't need your help, of all ponies. You've done quite enough, thanks. Just brilliant that you found someone with the capacity to actually care about you, Dash must really be something else then. I used to have friends, or at least I thought I did. But they all turned their backs on me when I decided to go to Cloudsdale to improve my flying in ways I never could've dreamed of in the tiny town I was from. But then some foal came along and carelessly flew into me, and destroyed the only dream I had. That's why I didn't go back. I have no friends around there anymore." He stated with an icy cold glare.

"Humor me for a second Nova, why did you leave your friends for Cloudsdale? Didn't you have just one speck of loyalty to your old town and school? It seems to me you just upped and left because you got a better offer from a different school...pathetic. I didn't choose to go here and i'd much rather be up there in Cloudsdale High and have Dashie as my Co-Captain rather than be here, but i didn't have a choice. You did Nova, and you seemed to have just left your little school for something better. You really have no loyalty do you, if you ask me...you deserve the way your friends treated you. You turned your back on them and they turned their backs on you. Like i said i can poke my nose wherever i want in this school, it was so pathetic before i got here and now its #1 in Equestria. Do you really want to try and tell me where i can and can't poke my nose into when its blatantly obvious what happened. You CHOSE to go to Cloudsdale, you CHOSE to abandon your friends and you CHOSE to come here. I mean how the hoof did you manage to get here without knowing i went here, i'm the talk every flying season. I'm the "future wonderbolt captain" as everyone keeps calling me and you can clearly see my name if you even bothered to look at the huge trophy case as you first walked in! If you are really that unobservant then thats your own fault."

 

At this point Rainbow Boom is sneering through his nostrils and looking at Nova with a dead stare

"At some point in your life you have to decide what your priorities are going to be. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices and sometimes you can't make everypony happy. My plans were to go to Cloudsdale, train, and come back. I told my friends this, but they didn't see it that way. They thought I was going to abandon them and never come back. No matter what I told them, they didn't see it. They never supported my ambition to be on a professional flight team anyway, so I left. I'm well aware that it was my choice, and you know what, if they thought what I wanted to do was stupid, then I can do without them."

 

"If you'll recall, I never knew it was you who crashed into me. Somepony decided to not acknowledge what happened or apologize for what they did. So I never made the connection until I saw you here. My reason for coming to Canterlot was because it was the closest city, simple as that." Nova replied flatly.

"You said i looked familiar, also how many rainbow ponies are in Equestria? I can only think of 3: Me, Dashie, and her dad. you knew it wasn't Dashie so you could've used some common sense. Yes there are priorities but theres also college and flying competitions like the best flyer competition, theres no need to switch schools over your dream when theres plenty of other ways to achieve it."

"You're still not listening. I said that I didn't know you. I came from a small town that didn't care about flying, nopony would've ever mentioned you at all. When I came to Cloudsdale, I was there for, literally, three days before I got hurt. That was it. While there may have been other options, none of them involved Rainbow Dash personally inviting me and mentoring me like she had offered at the time. So I took the opportunity while I had it. I wasn't going to be making much of a name for myself in that crummy town, and my 'friends' certainly weren't helping."

"Why not join best flyer competitions or stay at your school and go to the Cloudsdale practices after school? Your friends may not have cared about flying but they are still your friends and you shouldn't have left them like that. The amount of time you were in Cloudsdale is still irrelevant considering you should have at least noticed my unique mane when i git you before you blackout out. If Dashie visited you as many times as you said she did i'm pretty sure she would've mentioned who hit you midair considering it soiled any chance of a career at Cloudsdale.

"Because I'm not going to get mentored at a competition, and certainly not by Rainbow Dash. Part of her deal was that I had to move to Cloudsdale, which wasn't exactly next door to me anyway. She wanted to know that I was committed to this, and that's what she wanted, so that's what I did. My friends openly told me to hit the road, so I did. We all wanted nothing to do with each other at that point so we went our separate ways and that was that. I did notice your mane but it didn't mean much to me since I didn't know you or your name. Dash may very well have mentioned you but I don't remember her doing so. I lost a lot of my short-term memory after that crash and had to train my brain to remember things again. I was never good at remembering names anyway."

"So wait...why did you even need a mentor in the first place? I've never met a pony on a flying team who even humored the idea of a mentor... let alone left their town for one. Also why were you friends with people who didn't care about you, in my opinion you've just seemed to make some really bad choices in life."

"That's just it...I wasn't on a flying team. My school didn't have one and nopony was interested in starting one. So that's why I took the opportunity when it presented itself. When you're in a town as small as mine you don't have many choices in friends, so you tend to be friendly to anypony that actually talks to you. I wanted to fit in just as much as any other pony would. Now I know better, but back then I didn't."

"Because it's not my wings that are the problem." He then spread his wings to their full span to illustrate. His wings themselves were of an above average length and build, but not to the point that they were awkward. He then folded them back in and continued. "My impairment is not physical, nopony would ever know of it. That is, until they see me fly. As a result of my collision, I received a good amount of brain damage. Part of the damage affects my depth perception and my ability to calculate my position while in the air while doing anything from flying in a straight line to performing stunts. So often times I'll over or under compensate and that ends in me crashing, or at least messing up the maneuver. So that's why I stopped. I don't know how to fix my brain so I tried to do other things with it, and that's how I got my cutie mark."

Nova was silent for a few moments, attempting to keep himself calm. He blinked a few times and said "Well, I can fly, but only in a limited capacity, and for short distances, with mixed results. As you might imagine, me flying in urban areas usually doesn't end well. But the worst part by far, is missing that feeling of exhilarating freedom from being up there in the clouds. I think that all Pegasi are born with a need to satisfy it, and for the average Pegasus, the simple act of flying is enough to quell the desire. But for Pegasi like you, me, and Dash, we require a much...umm...higher dose, if you will. That's why we're always trying to push ourselves to the next level. For me, not being able to feel that anymore...it's hard to live with, I will say that much. Feels like I'm living in a glass box sometimes, to be honest. Occasionally it's hard for me to wake up in the morning with that looming over my head. But until I solved this issue with my brain, I had to do something else in the meantime. I couldn't give up, not after what my parents did for me." Here Nova hesitated again, but soon continued. "They...they both were killed...trying to save me and my siblings. Unfortunately, my memories of that day were also lost in that accident. I have no idea if I'll ever get those back. Or be able to fly like I used to." Nova sat down on the floor, defeated.

 

"You know what?" He whispered. "It is worse than being an earth pony, as you say. Now, I have the attributes of nopony..."
