A Defense of Princess Celestia by Princess Luna (Analysis Project)

In Reply to Gorshmidtll "Criticism is Magic: Princess Celestia" a series of journals or deviantions will be created going over the episodes and canon (in addition to the comics a bit) in defense of Princess Celestia through the point of view of her sister Princess Luna.

Yet there is much needed to be gone over and I am asking for aid in coming up with ideas, and to make sure I don't miss or forget anything. Also I may need suggests in how to go about using Princess Luna as the 'spokespony' for this project.

----------------------------------------

I will rewatch these episodes, taking notes on what is said and shown as well as my thoughts and interpretation of the following episodes so as to make sure I am using as much of the facts as available:

* Magic is Friendship Parts 1 & 2: both written by Lauren Faust, meaning when it comes these episodes I will be referencing her words on them.

* The Cutie Mark Chronicles: as this episode gives insight on Princess Celestia choosing Twilight Sparkle as her student.

* The Return of Harmony Parts 1 & 2: as it gives mention to the royal sisters past and introduces the first major villain since Nightmare Moon, Discord and hints on what Equestria had became during his rule.

* Lunar Eclipsed: as this episode reintroduces Princess Luna, with a new form as well as a fleshed out personality and character. Also adds more involving the lives on the royal sisters (I was so happy to see Princess Luna return :D)

* A Canterlot Wedding Parts 1 & 2: This episode with take some time to go over as I will admit it was not written as well as it could, but I have my own ideas how to make the canon work for me. I will consider the actions of character and reasoning behind them. This also introduces the shows next new villain Queen Chrysalis (though she is more interesting and better written in the comics), and going over her plan for take over.

* The Crystal Empire Parts 1 & 2: This one I actually feel was not given as much credit as it deserves, especially King Sombra and the steps he took to ensure the crystal heart was not found and taken from where he had put it.

* Sleepless in Ponyville: mainly Princess Luna's parts, her dreamwalking ability and how it seems she has found a way of playing a part in her subjects lives.

* Keep Calm and Flutter On: this is not a favorite episode of mine but as it involves Princess Celestia so I must go over it. I will be going over reasons why the risk would be taken to 'recruit' Discord and my feelings on the fact the his reform feels uncertain at best, at least him staying as an ally. That and I feel it suffered for only being a single episode.

* Magical Mystery Cure: This episode I feel suffers the most from being only a single episode, and the fact that it was not build up to as well as it could be in other episodes. Yet at the same time I don't see it the same why you do so this episode will be an interesting challenge to say the least.

* I may also reference other episodes a bit but for the most part the above will be my focus.

Facts from Magic is Friendship Part 1 & 2

* Celestia and Luna ruled together, creating harmony for all the land.

* Celestia raise the sun to bring the day while Luna raised the moon to bring the night.

* Through this process the royal sisters maintained balance in their kingdom and between the pony races.

* Given time Luna grow resentful since ponies were awake and active only during the day, while sleeping and shunning the night (which logically would not have been Princess Celestia's fault and would be common sense).

* One fateful day (the longest day of the year interestingly) Luna refused to lower the moon or listen to reason before her bitterness transformed her into Nightmare Moon (though it was said by Lauren Faust that a dark power or magic transformed Luna, confirmed through the comic as an entity that plays on the dark feelings of another)

* Nightmare Moon swore that she would shroud Equestria into eternal night (something Lauren Faust confirmed would have been very bad, which is reasonable because without the sun everything would grow cold and die).

* Princess Celestia tried reasoning with her sister and when that failed Luna became Nightmare Moon she had no choice but to reluctantly (a word Lauren Faust brought focus to in conversation) used the Elements of Harmony to defeat her sister and banish Nightmare Moon into the moon... seemingly permanently as was said in the prologue but later it was shown that it would only be for 1000 years by prophesy that it can be more then assumed that Celestia knew of.

* Celestia then took responsibility of both the sun and the moon, the day and the night... thus keeping harmony for generations afterwards, for 1000 years actually.

Also yes while this tale is told with the voice of Princess Celestia, yet it can be established by the fact that these episodes were written by Lauren Faust and by later words from her that this story is to be taken as the truth of what actually happened. Any less and your in denial of the truth for your own bias views.

* Nightmare Moon is shown to have many potent abilities, most of which Luna has not been shown to be able to perfectly duplicate if at all. Turning into the starry mist for example Luna has not shown to be able to copy. Her morphic/shapeshifting ability is shown only in her being able to take the form of Nightmare Moon and during dreams, though control over lightning she seems to be able to do just as well.

* From the book Pinkie Pie found for Twilight it is shown there are six elements but only 5 are known... yet it clearly shown in the prologue that Celestia was wearing the Element of Magic. That and there is evidence from other episodes that Celestia took Twilight under her wing as mentor as she saw in Twilight the potential for being the bearer of the Element of Magic.

* The book also shows that the ancient castle is that of the royal sisters (Lauren Faust confirming that this castle used to be the royal sister's home, and where they lived with their parents).

* Twilight and friends are able use the Elements of Harmony to defeat Nightmare Moon, to dispel the darkness and reveal Luna... something Celestia was unable to do (reasons for which can be found in later episodes).

* Celestia explains the reasoning for not telling Twilight that she needed to make friends.. (If Celestia had told Twilight to make friends and why she needed to so she would have treated it as an assignment, which would have meant Twilight would have forced/pressured ponies to be her friends).

* Celestia does not appear until after Nightmare Moon's defeat, seemingly coming from the rising sun suggesting she may have been imprisoned there (confirmed by Lauren Faust).

* Luna seems confused and uncertain upon awakening and when confronted by Celestia apologizes for her actions and hugs her sister with tears in her eyes.

The comics give this on Princess Luna and Nightmare Moon (taken from the MLP:FiM wiki since I have not read them yet):

In the series' second four-part story arc, Nightmare Moon is shown to be a completely separate entity from Princess Luna. It is revealed that Nightmare Moon is a creature of darkness born on the moon whose very presence corrupts the denizens of the moon. Through her power over nightmares, Nightmare Moon was able to feed off Luna's insecurities of living in her sister's shadow, thus allowing her to take over Luna's mind, which ultimately lead to her being banished to the moon for a thousand years.

@@EquestrianScholar,

well, i'm here to help :)

so, what episodes do you want to analize? and wich ones have you already done?

in the OP i see that you have already done the pilot episodes.

Actually the pilot episodes are the only ones I've been able to do. Also what we will be looking for is any bit of information involving the royal sisters, their past, their abilities, their decisions, and their feelings.

Information that can be used to for allowing Princess Luna to defend her sister on whether or not Princess Celestia is a competent ruler and worthy of her crown.

Celestia has committed no crimes or sins. What defense could you have for someone who has done nothing that requires defense?

Well you cannot deny their are those that honestly believe that Celestia is a bad ruler... such as Gorshmidtll in his deviantion "Criticism is Magic: Princess Celestia" who will be the one this defense is made to counter his criticism.

Oh, balderdash. There are people who would honestly believe Mister Rogers was a bad guy too. Really, if protecting your people from evil at a great personal cost to yourself makes a bad ruler, I wonder where Hitler falls on the spectrum.
