Scootadress 361 December 15, 2013 Share December 15, 2013 I think I just realized how dark it really is if you don't follow what your cutie mark actually means. While, I pointed this out in Magical Mystery Cure, I never realized how much of an effect it generally had on a pony. To sum my thoughts:Basically I felt that MMC was great because it showed how terrible an how shitty their lives ended up actually being and how delicate the balance of having your special talent. When Rainbow Dash had Fluttershy's cutie mark, she didn't view her mark essentially as how Fluttershy views the same marking, which caused her to nearly get eaten by animals. On top, Fluttershy lacked the ability to bring something to the ponies:Cheer, something, she can't do do to her being shy and quiet. She didn't see the view that Pinkie took on it:she's not a clown. She wants others happy. The list goes on and on. Think about it, the balance between how ponies are viewed in society, their roles, etc are based on their cutie mark. That is, if they are switched, they whole town is in shambles depending. (Apple farm goes under, the lack of cheer causes problems with ponies, weather problems, etc.) Yet, that's when this is reversed. What happens when you realize that your cutie mark doesn't mean much in a society? This has been shown in the series with Nightmare Moon and Trixie. That's when I realized how painful it must have been for Luna. Think about it:If Celestia has the power to raise the sun, wouldn't it be just as easy to raise the moon? She's this upset because she can't satisfy her cutie mark. It would ultimately suck if you wound up with a cutie mark that just gets overshadowed and no pony can really marvel at what it means and the worst possible thing is that knowing that other ponies have that same mark or meaning to that mark. If you excluded Celestia's need to sleep, then she would still be able to lift the sun and moon typically. If you look at Trixie, her cutie mark is show magic. If you can't do a show, then how useful is your life? How miserable would you be? I feel that perhaps everything that you see and all the anger is directed from what their cutie mark means and destinies. Now, what does a cutie mark really mean in this world? Can a pony actually be born with the wrong cutie mark-wrong destiny, and to something really bad. 2 SCOOTALOO = Best CMC PINKIE PIE=Best Pony LUNA=Best Princess
Scootalove 10,689 December 15, 2013 Share December 15, 2013 What a cutie mark means in their world is, when you finally discover your talent you're able to be satisfied with what your talent is if you start to become experienced with your talent and harness it to accomplish anything that you set your mind to. If a pony were to be born with wrong cutie mark/wrong destiny, they can not be accustomed to their wrong destiny because it is not who they are meant to be and feel frustrated when they can not do the talent that they did not start with in the first place. 1 Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules

Sorry, I read this post with a Pinkie Pie voice. I read a fic with Silver Spoon particularly that got me to think this way. If your accustomed to a certain way, maybe your cutie mark would symbolize the wrong idea that you had before. Then there are certain marks you can't obtain til late in life. (Royal Sisters) Or, perhaps, have a skill that they have earned their mark from, but HATE the skill. Seen that done too perfectly. 1 SCOOTALOO = Best CMC PINKIE PIE=Best Pony LUNA=Best Princess
ShadOBabe 19,014 December 15, 2013 Share December 15, 2013 (edited) I think a cutie mark is just a physical representation of what you're best at. BUT I think what you do with that talent is up to you. Rarity's actual cutie mark talent seems to be locating gems. But she loves fashion. So she uses her ability to find gems to add personal flare to her real passion. Gems are how she expresses herself in her chosen craft. It seems to me that in MMC it was not just the cutie marks that got swapped, but the girls memories as well. They all believed that what they were doing was what they have ALWAYS been doing, and it seemed in their eyes that ONLY NOW were they having trouble doing it. Just look at Applejack's tears when the sewing machine eats the clothes she's working on. She doesn't understand why her talent (which she's always been good at as far as she knows) isn't working anymore. The talents and passions didn't get swapped, because none of them were satisfied with OR good at what they were doing anymore. If they had a cutie mark that showed a talent that isn't their real talent, but if they hate it and they are good at it then that's different from what I said. Jammo 986 December 15, 2013 Share December 15, 2013 I think the CMC grossly overstate the importance of their cutie marks. It's like puberty. When it hits and you discover yourself.. Yeah it's worth a pat on the back but most parents don't treat as a "Holy crap this is huge" event. More a fact of life that people / ponies are comfortable with. If a pony cares that much about their mark they have insecurities.. Again much like puberty.
