Favorite horror game?

My mind wants me to say Amnesia The Dark Descent or Resident Evil 2. However my heart says Silent Hill 2. I love that game a lot. The soundtrack is so good. Such an unsettling game.

This might be out there a bit

But Home Safety Hotline is my favorite horror game.

It doesn't rely on cheap jumpscares like so many horror games do.

The entries/entities you never get to personally meet, but if you fail an answer, it ranges from typical customer annoyance to hearing them on the phone get mauled to death by something, or they hallucinate on the phone. And there's literally nothing you can do about it.

Omg the calls on some of the failed answers. It's no jumpscare but the voice acting made many of them very chilling. There's one in particular that's just terrifying if you give the wrong answer.

The variety and integration of ancient fae and paranormal activity mixed with 90s Anywhere, America, is done very well. You'll get entries like termites mixed with otherworldly things.

Lore-wise, it's interesting how cops and doctors just tell people to call the HSH because of how insane these specific issues are. They want nothing to do with them and I can't blame them.

Especially when these issues just roll around each other in an endless wheel of suffering. The remedy or solution of one problem can attract another entity. One that may be even more dangerous than whatever the caller is dealing with.

As well as what would happen if it isn't dealt with soon enough. There are some freaky yet friendly entities but if you don't take care of them, they will take on metamorphosis and turn into something that will make you wish you put out the bowl of cream every night.

There's some that aren't even creatures; paranormal locations can pop up... many of which just cause people to fall into madness.

Their implementation of analog horror is done very well too. It's not forced and fits with the atmosphere of the game.

I also appreciate that nothing is a quick time event. Everything's at your own pace so you can just keep callers on hold forever if you want.

I have a few that are my favourites right now. Not because they are outright scary, but rather because they pretty much do horror storytelling right and have depth to that storytelling as well. They're also just made in a top down RPG maker of some description. No over the top flashy graphics and just use what is necessary to tell a story and offer an experience. The games are Ib, Misao, Mad Father and The Witch's House. They all focus on exploration and puzzle solving in terms of game play as well as surviving whatever they throw at you.

Ib

You play a little girl that visits an art gallery, that soon finds herself in a more cursed version of that gallery. The art pieces either serve as part of the puzzles, offering clues to progressing throughout the gallery in search of a way out. Or they serve as hostile entities that are out to harm you. So expect to be chased around in a dark room by crawling portraits hanging out of their frames. It doesn't rely on blood and gore, but instead focuses on the basic fear of uneasiness and the unknown. The antagonist is also complex as it isn't outright evil. I really wanted to see the antagonist get their wish, because I found them relatable.

The Witch's House

Now this one is definitely a change of pace in terms of horror as there are ways to meet many horrible and bloody fates. In this one, you play as a young girl venturing into a house in the woods that belongs to a witch and as you would expect, is cursed with all sorts of horrors. The things where you can meet your demise, can range from your average perils to the strange and disturbing. Also, the story has an interesting twist, depending on a certain item you obtain before the ending.

Misao

This one has more story depth to it. It revolves around a high school girl named Misao who goes missing and curses her school. You play as one of her classmates who wants to find Misao and help her. It touches on subjects of extreme bullying and you learn more about what Misao went through and what the others did to her. It all leads to a rather disturbing turn of events as you learn her whole story and what happened. You're not too heavily pursued by threats in this game, but the setting is a massive threat of it's own as interacting with anything remotely innocent leave you meeting a horrible fate in some way. Some bloody and some disturbing and weird. But you do get an achievement list of all the deaths you "collect". So if you're not afraid of the morbid, it can be fun to see what horrible ends you can meet.

Mad Father

From the same creator as Misao and with some connected lore to Misao that doesn't affect the story or gameplay as such, but is a pretty big Easter Egg. In this one, you play a little girl in Germany who lived with her mother and father. A perfect little happy family living in a mansion filled with dolls of all sizes. However, the father, who is a scientist is always shut away in the basement within his laboratory, the daughter, completely oblivious to what he does in there. Additionally, things aren't as happy in the family as they may seem. The father is having an affair with his assistant and the mother knows of it. At some point, the mother had passed away and later, a curse is placed on the mansion. The dolls that fill the mansion come to life and become hostile. The game revolves you playing as the little girl, exploring the mansion and her father's laboratory with the objective of saving him. But as you progress, you discover a lot of disturbing truths about the father's work.

So yeah. I definitely recommend these if you like classic horror storytelling, exploration and puzzle solving.
