Zekromic 1,054 January 22, 2014 Share January 22, 2014 another couple of advises I can give are: 1-Eat as early as possible 2-Eat until you are no longer hungry, not until you are full (I've seen many advice mallards memes with that advice) 3-If you're feeling hungry eat a short snack 4-If you have done exercise regularly, your metabolism will burn more calories daily, that'll make it safe to eat junk food from time on time without gaining much weight. I can't either I could very easily eat an entire large pizza by myself and that is why I set aside a cheat day once a week when I will eat whatever I want and have maybe the occasional minor cheat every now and then. truth is life 76 January 22, 2014 Share January 22, 2014 (edited) I'm pretty lazy, at least in some ways, so it's been hard for me to start exercising, especially since the whole field seems hard to get in to with worries about doing things wrong and hurting yourself and little reliable advice on good exercise programs. In dieting you have plenty of scientific studies to dig into to figure out what's good and what's not, but most of the studies on exercising just seem to have monolithic "did exercise" or "did not exercise" switches, with not a lot of drilling down into detail. I'll admit I'm not in that area and I haven't done a literature search, though, so I might just be missing the ones that do. On the other side of the OP's question, though, laziness has actually been (to some extent) something I've been able to leverage to help keep what I eat healthy. I don't follow any specific diet in terms of portion sizes or specific foods to avoid/eat, but I do aim to have a healthy diet overall, meaning lots of plant foods and relatively few animal foods. To do this, I...well, buy a lot of plant foods and relatively few animal foods. Because it's very inconvenient to go to the grocery store and I purchase food relatively infrequently, there's a high bar to me eating very much unhealthy stuff, and my innate laziness pretty much saves me from actually going through and doing it unless it's a very long-running sort of craving. I've found simply not having any of what you think you should have less of (for instance, candy) makes it easy to not eat it. I've also been working slowly on replacing things in my diet which seem unhealthy with things that are healthier but can fill the same role, as it were. For instance, a few months ago I replaced the soups that I usually had with lunch with salad. Same role, but much healthier. Right now I'm mulling over things that I could do to replace the TV dinners I usually anchor my dinners with with fresher, healthier food. The main constraint is that I'm not very experienced or skilled in cooking and I need to be able to eat everything I make by myself in a reasonable amount of time. So I'm thinking about it. It does help that I have an exceptionally high tolerance for having very similar food every day (which also makes it simple to plan ahead what I need to get at the grocery store). For instance, pretty much every morning for most the past two years, save for some trips home or abroad and the past couple of months, I've had oatmeal with sugar and raisins; a slice of toast with margarine, peanut butter, and jelly; and water for breakfast. This is still actually a pretty good description, except that I've started playing a bit more with what goes in the oatmeal, I use butter instead of margarine, and I might start having iced tea or coffee instead of water in the future. For a few days every week after going to the grocery store, I'd have a banana too. Judging from what I've seen elsewhere, most people wouldn't be able to stand literally having the same thing every day for the better part of two years for breakfast. Oh well, only on week 2, so I guess I'm still at the part which makes me feel perpetually hungry. Its encouraged me to do other things to take my mind off of it though, so my productivity is going up as a result. Doesn't keep me from missing stuffed crust pizza though. Treble Bolt 1,122 January 22, 2014 Share January 22, 2014 I never really intended on dieting until after I got married, but by then, some positive lifestyle changes had already occurred. In college, I couldn't afford meat and dairy. Was like that for 3 years, and now, if I consume too much, I get sick. Thus I am a vegetarian because of that. However, I will eat meat/drink milk if I go to a restaurant and it's available since for me, going out means having a meal that you normally do not have at home, thus it's more of a special thing. I also stopped drinking soda. Part of that was working fast food for over 5 years. I got so sick of soda's and sweet teas. Water was easier to chug anyways with things being so fast paced. Again, I only consume soda now if I go out, and even then, I opt for milk or tea first. After getting married, I got the marriage weight that comes with it. I have always been active; I bike 10 miles a day no problem, but that's about it. Now that it's winter, I have to drive to work (which is 5 miles away), but once it's consistently above 40 degrees, I'll be on my bike again. However, biking hasn't done much to help my weight, neither has farm work. So I got some 5 lb bolts and used them as dumbbells for about 3 months. I am a blacksmith, so that got too light too fast. Now I have 10lb dumbbells at home that I lift for 15 minutes + a day (often when I'm watching anime, so it's a mindless task). I have joined a local gym to work specifically on my abs and thighs since that's where all my weight has gone. Working out is a problem because I have 4 healed fractures in my spine, so I have constant back pain when I do any lifting and that really discourages me. Plus, I have immensely strong legs and bum, so other than my torso, there's not much I can do for strength training and weight loss. So I'm just taking it a little at a time. I'm currently trying to lower my portions since it being winter, we tend to eat more anyways. I focus on my core when I am able, but again, losing weight is a problem if you already fit and active and already have a healthy diet... When I'm hungry, I drink water, which usually settles my stomach for the time being. Don't overuse that though, make sure you're still meeting your calorie goals and macronutrient goals for the day. Drinking plenty of water is good by all means keep doing that but another good way to show hunger who is boss is with protein shakes. Make sure you read the labels carefully though as some of them can have artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose (splenda) and other things in them which aren't that great for you which can defeat the purpose of taking them in the first place. Whey/cassein(milk) based protein drinks are commonly used but vegetable based protein drinks can be just as effective in my opinion, one that has worked for me is called MRM. They don't have any additives are very low in sugar and have no artificial sweetners yet don't taste all that bad (especially the chocolate flavored ones) and you can even add a little peanut butter to them for some extra flavor. Eating plenty of fiber is also a good idea, it will also help keep you full as well as helping with digestion and regularity. Sully 22 February 4, 2014 Share February 4, 2014 I have a terrible, horrible fear of being fat. Tell me about it eh. I went back to school full time and paying attention works up a mean appetite. I am in school all day 4 days a week in class or studying or working on projects, all activities done sitting down but I get so damn hungry. Being in school means rationing my time so that means vending machine food sometimes. My plan is to exercise the way I used to when I was a part-time student. 4 or 5 sets of push-ups "til failure" 5x5 sets of bicep curls. Heavier weight and fewer reps make for a more interesting workout. 5 sets of "til failure' ab crunches 30min of jump rope. I am not sure what I will do if thie routine ever gets boring, I ain't trippin tho. As far as diet, I don't eat meat and stuff but I have been indulgent as of late with beer and cornchips while out with buddies. Not much cutting out needs to be done, more fruit for breakfast and veggies for lunch would do me real nice. -S Diet and exercise are interesting topics to me. I feel terrible after eating taco bell, a bag of hot cheetos, and a large dr. Pepper. Exercise? Lol I don't even. I took a dance class instead of PE, but I had to drop it due to migrate problems. My already large appetite shoots through the damn roof on my workout days, I eat a lot more on those days than most other days. Despite this though I haven't lost any weight I can tell I have lost fat and have lost 2 inches on my waistline. The reason why the number on the scale hasn't gone down yet is probably because I tend to gain muscle fairly quickly and thanks to muscle memory from my previous years of weight lifting along my work of getting back I can already tell the difference even after just a few weeks and I intend to keep it up. On one particularly intense workout day my Mom made some flank steak for dinner (I would say around 3 or 4 pounds of meat) and I was so ravenous than I almost ate the whole thing and even after all that while I felt full it was the satisfied, content kind of full as opposed to the "oh my god I ate way way too much" kind of full. 1 Rarity Get's Cockroaches Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Today will probably make it twice though as I still have some leftover roast beef from dinner last night, today is a work out day so the beef if anything may actually help me today. I eat a lot of fish and chicken both of which are good sources of lean protein and fish is a good source of omega 3 and other beneficial fatty acids.
