If I barely watch the show, does that still make me a brony?

so you think you were a brony after one show that does not make you a brony. what makes you a brony is if you enjoy it or not if not then no. i have only watched 30 eps and i am a brony. so yeh if you like it you are a brony.

It is up to you if you want to identify yourself as a brony.

I myself do not consider or call myself a brony, I already liked MLP before the FIM/Brony fandom existed.

I agree with this. I've watched every episode (of FIM anyways), have plenty of fan created music and art, hang out around here, have merch... yet I do not call myself a brony. I don't feel like you have to call yourself something just because you enjoy something. I've always felt this way. I've never felt a need to call myself a trekkie, whovian, or any other thing just because I like it. What happened to just enjoying things without feeling like you need to label it? Since I'm a fan of wind-up watches, I suppose I need a designated label so I feel part of some community and not seen as an outside poser or I'm not actually a fan? Please...

In closing, call yourself one if you wish, but you don't have to. You're a fan if you think you're one, not because you call yourself whatever that fandom's members have been labeled.

I don't see how your'e not a brony. If you have watched all of the show, there is without a doubt interest in it. If you also buy merch, then you are definitely a fan.

Brony = MLP:FiM fan

So if you don't watch the show, you aren't a fan of MLP:FiM. You are however a fan of the community. But the community is only a group of people, so you are a fan of being social and belonging.

So you are a Brony, and the thread starter isn't.

That's my opinion at least. If everyone go around calling everyone a brony, it's not weird the term is being washed out.

If a person can speak french, it doesn't automatically make them french.

If a person speak french, they are either from a french speaking area, or they enjoy the language enough to learn it.

So in your analogy, you are from a french speaking area, since you already watched MLP. While people who have learned french, gotta be fan of the language.

sooo....   if you like the french language (like the community) but can't speak it, you can't communicate with people speaking french.

That became quite badly written, hope you can extract my point ^^

At least you admit it.

I myself don't consider myself a brony, and I probably never will. It's a choice, if you want to make it, go ahead, if not, well that's okay too. People can be whoever they choose to be and who are we to force them one way or the other?

I don't get your point..

In my analogy the person is not from a french speaking area, and they don't watch MLP. This hypothetical person can speak french. So you would assume, the person must like french because they took the time to like the language - but that doesn't make them french.

Or, the person could have been in high school and was forced to take a language to get enough credits, so they don't really like french but have to take it to get enough credits to graduate high school and since they don't like to make bad grades they dedicated them self to learning french because it was required. It doesn't make them french or a fan. But none of this is relevant and it's not even relevant to me because when I was in high school a second language was not required (LOL!)

Just like watching and liking MLP:FIM doesn't automatically make a person a Brony. I know about My Little Pony but I don't assume any roll as far as liking MLP goes, I've been liking MLP for 30 years...screw titles, I just like MLP.

The first two shows were actually good.

I like MLP, I like the toy, and the cartoon :) I lean more towards the toy because when I first started collecting the actual toy ponies, there was no TV show.

You may see me as a brony, I do not.

Others may also see me as a Whovian, Trekkie, Brown Coat, Furry, plenty of other things. I don't. It's my choice to how I refer to myself, and I don't see the point in individual labels for the fan of something beyond "fan" no matter what interest we are talking about.

Can't somebody like something without being labeled? That was my point. I'm a fan of MLP, end of discussion as far as I'm concerned. If you feel the need to call me a brony to make that connection, feel free. I just happen to enjoy what I enjoy.

The whole french analogy wasn't the best :P

My main point is the simple statement:

Watching the show frequently = Interest in the show = MLP:FiM fan = Brony         conclusion:  Watching the show frequently = Brony

So calling yourself a fan of the show is the same as calling yourself a brony. You say screw titles. It's not as much of a title, as it is a statement.

Just like saying

I've been liking MLP for 30 years

So you like MLP, that makes you a "MLP liker", or said in less tongue twisting words, your'e a "brony"

Btw, I might come across as harsh. It's only because I enjoy a debate, and sharing opinions =)

Celestia ain't got nothing on me....

but seriously, yea, there are a lot of people like me who have liked MLP since the beginning. So it's nothing against the Brony fandom, I just don't think of myself that way, I just see myself as a person who likes MLP and doesn't need to assume a name to be part of the crowd.

What french are you speaking? In english I would say, I like My Little Pony. The word brony is not required to say that I like My Little Pony.

You are suggesting it is required that I say, Hi My name is KarentheUnicorn...you killed my father, prepare to die...oh wait sorry wrong movie.

Hi, I'm karentheUnicorn, I like My Little Pony...I Brony...assimilate or die?

Correct, but it isn't wrong either ;)

I didn't quite catch the rest of the post

It seem people define bronies, and fans watching the show, as two different groups. While in my eyes they are two words for the same people.

Your'e a "fan" or you are a "non-fan"

You are a "brony", or you are "non-brony"

So I have the label: "Brony and fan"

While you have the label: "Non-brony and fan"

I just struggle to see the difference, are we really so different that we need different labels?

uhm... Im not really sure why you yourself would consider yourself a brony. I dont know your reasoning for not liking the show even tho I probably know why. Its pretty obvious you watched an episode and didnt like it and by the looks of it dont like the show.

Being a brony maybe not only be about the show but I mean.. if you've never even seen it and say that you're a fan of it.. not sure.

Lets say Im a really big fan of twinkies, but ive only taken a bite of 1 twinkie in my entire life. Even tho the full twinkie factory was in my backyard

another bad example is ''im gay but i dont like other men.''

but you can call yourself a brony I guess.

But I wouldnt consider you being a brony. might sounds like im a bag of dicks. Then again im a guy on the internet you've never met so why listen to me

I don't know why you are struggling? And what labels? There seems to be only one label and that isn't plural. I don't see how saying I like My Little Pony creates any kind of label for me other than me liking a toy/cartoon. You label yourself as a brony and you accept that label, I say I don't have a label, don't need a label, don't want a label. And I don't have to accept it as who I am or define myself by what everyone decides.

This isn't a country, I'm not pledging allegiance to a flag or religion.  Some people who are fans of a cartoon decided to be called Brony...now why exactly do I have to agree with them, hasbro, the news media or anyone else for that matter?

I'm a brony

You are not a brony

Yet we are the same? Fans of the show.

You seem to think of the label Brony as a negative one. Or actually you seem to think of any label as negative. Is it so?

Assuming you say you do not like labeling:

It is unfortunately inevitable. What do you answer on questions of your sexuality? a label. (hetero, homo, bi...)

What about your religious believe? a label. (christian, muslim, atheist....)

I guess what you are getting at is that you don't like negative labels.

If that is correct, then I ask you: What do you find negative about the Brony label? =)

This is part of an ongoing issue I see: bronies need to accept that not all fans want to be bronies and respect that. Forced participation is never a good thing.

I don't disrespect people avoiding the title. I just want to know why. This discussion with @@KarentheUnicorn, isn't about about Bronies specifically any more, it's about labeling.

It's something I find quite interesting, and I can't help but to get fired up (in the possitive way) when someone comes with a strong opinion. =)

But since you seem to also have thoughts about this, I guess I can narrate it down to to a question.

What is the difference between a brony, and a fan of MLP?

Whether you choose to label yourself as one, I suppose. I think Karen's point is that she has liked the franchise for a loooooong time, and it's kind of unfair that she be lumped with the "bronies" as if she jumped on the bandwagon when she was here before them. It's an identity thing, and everyone has the right to decide their own identity.
