How many my phony pony products are out there?

It depends on what you're talking about.... there are tons of fan-made products out there but I'd hardly call them phony products... they're just not official.  Of course there are also companies in China and other places making knockoff products, but that's true with anything.  I don't think there's a particularly high amount of fake merchandise out there.

I will say that I have a plush made by one of those Chinese knockoff companies and it's actually much better quality than anything official that has come out, so I'm not complaining.

For a little history...There have actually been fakies since the begining back in the 80s. In the MLP collecting community the non official hasbro pony toys are called fakies. As in fake ponies, non hasbro.

The term probably came into existance because at least back in the day fakies were very cheap looking compared to official hasbro produced g1 ponies. And sometimes kinda ugly...and even back then we kids knew they were not real mlp so we called them fake...thus the term fakie came into existance.

At some pony meets we even have a game called wack a fakie...where you pick a fake pony toy an your weapon of choice to see who can hit the fake pony the furthest.

Generally fakies are viewed as inferior to real mlp but there are actually quite a few collectors of mlp who like to also have a herd of fakies.

As a mlp collector you can run into people who try to pass off a fakie as a real mlp. Just like any other toy there are plenty of fakies out there and you have to know mlp to know the difference.

  • 2 weeks later...

If it says "My Pretty Pony" on the front, it's most likely knock off... It's also a dead giveaway if the package has gen 4 graphics, and the product looks like gen 1....

Actually the first original My Little Pony back in 1981 was My Pretty Pony, so that doesn't mean it's not a real MLP. Plus a lot of fakies do not look at all like Gen 1, it just means some people don't know how to identify a real MLP from a hole in the wall.
