Azureth 687 March 24, 2014 Share March 24, 2014 I was thinking, once a Pony has gotten their cutie mark showing what they are supposedly best at, can they really not become good at anything else? Doesn't it seem kind of depressing that you are kind of pre-determined to be good at one thing and one thing only in your life? In contrast humans can become good at many things and even if they are really good and even successful at something many times they get bored and get good at something else. Whereas in Pony society they seem to just accept their lot in life and don't really try anything new, and even if they do they usually are bad at it and just end up going back to whatever their cutie mark signifies they are best at. I started thinking about this during Pinkie Pride when we went through the montage of Pinkie trying new jobs and failing. I mean, are we to believe Ponies NEVER get tired of what they are "supposed" to do and just go on with the same job/career their entire lives? I get that I am probably thinking too much on this but it is something that's kind of bugged me. I mean, I like doing computer stuff and am pretty knowledgeable with them, but I would hate it if I suddenly got some mark of a computer signifying that's the only thing I could ever really be good at or do. What are your thoughts on the subject?

TheChosenPony 279 March 24, 2014 Share March 24, 2014 (edited) There ARE ponies with cutie marks signifying multiple talents, Like if you are good at something more than computer stuff and you try multiple things your cutie mark would probably be say, some binary and a paintbrush or a chalkboard to signify multiple talents, some people only have 1 good talent they are truly good at and they stick to it, but it would have to be important talent. They can do other stuff and be good at it yes, but it doesn't mean that's what their destiny is to help society. But usually a cutie mark signifies a personality then a talent really, rarity is a good designer, yet her cutie mark are diamonds, for her generous personality, some ponies like coco pommel havent found their destiny yet they have their cutie marks Edited March 25, 2014 by TheChosenPony May the force be with you, always Subscribe to my youtube channel, It'll give you a laugh, hell maybe two
Frostgage 7,981 March 25, 2014 Share March 25, 2014 I don't think a cutie mark has to be a pony's destiny per se, more that it's their special talent. But there's nothing preventing them from being great at other things too. Signature by Lacerna | You should fill out my Johari Window. All the cool kids are doing it. Ribbonfree 2,384 March 25, 2014 Share March 25, 2014 It might be more of a case of the magic of the land 'knowing' that this pony will always want to do this occupation of theirs, at the end of the day. As in, even if they tire of it for a time they'll come back to it. The cutie mark doesn't necessarily limit them to a one track life, as we see both Fluttershy and Rarity are talented singers despite their cutie marks indicating completely different life callings. But ultimately in their heart of hearts they will always enjoy being [x] and as a result that's their cutie mark.
Espurr 449 March 25, 2014 Share March 25, 2014 Yeah, and my OC's cutie mark is also the pony version of me and her cutie mark is video games and I love video games. As long as they keep making new ones, I don't think I could ever get tried of it. Yeah, and my OC's cutie mark is also the pony version of me and her cutie mark is video games and I love video games. OptimisticNeighsayer 479 March 25, 2014 Share March 25, 2014 (edited) Cutie marks are not just significations of talent but also of self-identity. (That was sort of implied in many of the CMC episodes but only confirmed in "Magical Mystery Cure".) A pony might actually be talented in a number of things, but only really identifies with one. I actually think it's possible for an adult pony's cutie mark to change if their identity undergoes a radical change (and not just through some artificial spell, mind you!). Scootalove 10,692 March 25, 2014 Share March 25, 2014 Cutie marks can tell a lot about a pony and who they are. Whether it be the talent their cutie mark implies, or how they are depicted when they are very talented in many things but their cutie mark can show the one thing that can go along with that one talent. They are not limited to just one thing. Credit: Moony © Forum FAQ Forum Rules
