Who knows, really. All I know is he wants me to rise and shine every weekday at 10:15AM.

Here's a theory video on who the G-Man is.

Possibly a guy that lives in Gordon Freeman's conscious... like a guardian angel sort of guy...

EDIT: No, that's not right. Forget what I just typed. >.<

Well, Eli seemed to know who he is, lets ask him! Oh, wait...

The G-Man can't be strictly in Gordon's mind, since Eli knew him, and he has to be bad news, since those nice alien dudes made an effort to keep him away. Best guess is that he's probably some otherworldly entity that arranged all the bad happenings at Black Mesa so the world would end up the way it is, but he probably isn't with the Combine, since he appears to not give a crap when Gordon is fighting them. He may act like he's working with them, since Dr. Bree knew about his "offer" to Gordon, but the G-Man is probably manipulating them too.

He only steps in when Gordon is about to make some important decision, enter the next step in his journey like when he entered City 17, or when his influence on Gordon is threatened, so he has to be leading him to some conclusion.

All right, I've come up with a better response to this thread.

Nobody knows who the G-Man is, and this seems to be an intentional thing by Valve, to leave players wanting to find out who this mysterious figure that guides him through Black Mesa, then guides him to taking down the Combine-led dictatorship of Earth. He is only described as a "sinister interdimensional bureaucrat" and has demonstrated capabilities beyond that of a normal human being, leading some players to believe he is a representation of God or the God of the Half-Life universe. Maybe he is, but nobody knows for sure. He does seem to be using Gordon Freeman and then Alyx Vance (whom he claims to have saved from Black Mesa post-Resonance Cascade, "When I plucked her from Black Mesa, I acted in the face of objections that she was a mere child and of no practical use to anyone. I have learned to ignore such naysayers when quelling them was out of the question.") as his messenger, or messiah if you will. It's often said that he's the one who brought Freeman to Black Mesa's attention while he was studying experimental physics abroad in Austria, and the one who gave Black Mesa that crystal that caused the Resonance Cascade.

As for who the G-Man really is, I'm not really at the liberty to say. All what we know is that he seems to be the one guiding Dr. Freeman through his journeys and his mysteriousness seems to be intentionally done by Valve to leave players wanting to know who he is. If we did know, though, then threads like this wouldn't exist and a lot of what makes Half-Life so... unique in this sea of generic, copy-and-paste first-person shooters would be lost. Valve seems to have a thing for mysterious characters in their games, with the G-Man being one of them (along with the Pyro from Team Fortress 2 and Doug Rattmann in Half-Life's sister series Portal), and keeping them mysterious, to me, seems much better than explaining who they are.

In Half-life 3 we find he's secretly Gabe Newell, who we then find is also Gordon freeman, and that the entire franchise is a big, long Fanfic Played out in Gabes mind.

I'm saying he's Gordon from the future. Maybe he does something to get those... alien thing pissed at him. that's what I'm guessing. It would also explain his odd abilities, somehow.

@, Hey there, just letting you know that I moved this thread from General Discussion over to the Media Discussion, and since this pertains to a video game, I gave it a Gaming tag. Thanks! :)

Oh yeah, some quotes from the Nihilanth, possibly talking about the G-Man.

"You are man... he is not man... for you he waits... for you..."

"The truth... you can never know... the truth..."

"Deceive you... will deceive you..." (this might also be referencing Dr. Wallace Breen and how he became the dictator of Earth after the Combine invasion)

"Thieves... you all are thieves... you all are..."

We all know G-Man is Gordon's biggest fan. He's always following him, watching his every move so he can be just like his idol.

Maybe he's secretly Satan.
