A question about Tirek.

So, according to the episode we are to believe that Tirek menaged to escape in the episode "It's about time" when cerberus was away for a little while. However, that was way back in S2. True it was stated that he needed time to regain his powers but from the most recent episodes it sure seems like he just managed to get out and start taking the ponies energies. Are we to believe that he JUST started taking ponies energies or that he was really just THAT weak at that point he was strong enough to be shown?

Not sure if every season is equal to one year as far as the ponyverse is concerned but still, it seems odd either way.

I like to think that the first scene he's shown (the one from the teaser where he sucks away the unicorn's magic in the alleyway) took place right after Cerberus left Tartarus in It's About Time. So he would have been slowly growing stronger throughout S2, S3 and S4, and we are shown his growth up until he meets Discord (At which point everything that is happening would be taking place in the present).

But how are Celestia and Luna just now learning about this? He has been out for quite a while, no matter how you look at it.

You might have found a plot hole  I think that they just wanted to show some continuity, and decided a throwback to a S2 episode to explain how this new villain came about was the way to go.

As far as we know not even a year has really passed in equestria. As far as we know this could have all taken place over a few months time. After being in prison for who knows how long, I'm sure tirek was extremely weak. Also we don't know where Tartarus is exactly. Maybe it's far away or In another dimension. It doesn't seem all that out of place to me to be honest.

You saw how weak tirek was and you saw how strong he got from alicorn magic and before that too! I guess he can be weaker. But like what did he do that he couldn't do in his prison, did he eat more food, or what?

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it save equistria with its five candy coloured friends and shoot rainbows at bad guys using their necklaces and tiara unless you're celestia

Well after his magic was removed we notice he was much MUCH smaller than the intro of the finale, perhaps he had to take power from lesser creatures, smaller than ponies, which could be why it took him so long

Tartarus could be a place where you aren't just chained but where you are deprived of everything and severely weakened to a point of being incapable of doing the most simple of things and them requiring a lot of effort.

It is the MLP version of hell, hades... That's not to be taken very lightly.

Compare it to Voldemort. At first he wasn't much else than a parasite on someone's head. You know how that ended.

Let's go downtown.

I think Tirek knew that he had to bide his time at first, he couldn't sap a bunch of ponies right away otherwise his plan would be discovered too soon and he would be too weak to fight off the princesses. Tirek is the most  clever villain we have seen since King Sombra, he was patient enough to drain just enough to regain his strength without arousing too much suspicion until he was strong enough to take care of pretty much any threat he would face. He didn't count on Discord being freed or on him being on the ponies side and he knew that he wasn't strong enough to beat Discord at the time so he tricked him and then drained his power once he was strong enough to do so. He also didn't count on there being another princess of her having the others power instilled in her but if it was for the keys his minds games and threats would have ensured his victory.
