Smashing News! (April 8th, 2014 Nintendo Direct)
Here's what to take away from the Nintendo Direct that just aired today (in a list format due to lack of time).
1. Four returning fighters were announced: Yoshi, Sheik (now a separate character from Zelda), Charizard (by himself) and Zero Suit Samus (now a separate character from Samus).
2. One brand new fighter was announced: Greninja (expect radical Mewtwo fans to be pissed).
3. Ridley and Yellow Devil were confirmed as boss characters.
4. A Master Ball from Pokemon is now a separate item from the regular Poke Ball.
5. All stages now have a "Final Destination" variation (flat stage, no obstacles, with aesthetics based on the stage chosen).
6. Revealed that random matches online are now split up into "For Fun" and "For Glory" (think Player vs. Ranked).
7. The 3DS exclusive "Smash Run" mode was announced. It functions like Kirby Air Ride's "City Trial" (Pick up items and power-ups in preparation for a separate battle at the end).
8. A good amount of items, assist trophies, and Pokemon were announced.
9. Many characters had their moves showcased to some extent (Zelda's Down-B is now Phantom Slash, Olimar's Up-B is now Flying Pikmin, Pit has the Three Sacred Treasures as his Final Smash, Mega Man has his other iterations join in alongside him in a firing squad as his Final Smash, etc.).
10. Revealed customizable attacks for offline and friend-based online play. For example in the footage Kirby's inhale was given an freezing attribute, but couldn't suck the opponent in anymore.
11. The gameplay is noticeably faster in the footage shown, than it was in Brawl (seems about on par with Melee).
12. No release date yet, still expected to have a Holiday 2014 launch for Wii U, but will be released on the 3DS this summer.
