I think of it in terms of people. With there being 7 billion people, you are bound to have similarities with some of them. Some may have the same talent(s) as you. Some may have the same hair color as you. Same eye color as you. Same hometown as you. Same [insert characteristic here]. Does that mean you are not original or unique? No, of course not.

Same goes with OCs...sure it may have similarities to other ones, but it can still be very original.

With a huge fandom of thousands, theres definitely going to be similarities, but I do happen to find OCs that are like nearly exactly the same with only different colors and manestyle.

I don't have the same "backstory" as anyone in the world..except maybe my siblings. Everyone's lives are so different IRL, I find it hard to believe that you can't create a backstory for an OC that isn't like someone else's.

Same goes for personalities. I don't think anyone in this whole world has the exact personality that I do. So if there are so many...why should it be hard to create a new one?

If you're not going to put much effort into it, then of course there will be "copycats".

Also...who cares if others are very similar? Original means you created it. As long as you didn't copy someone else, it lives up to its title of "OC".

I think your example is a good idea, yet incorrect. The numbers are problematic; for example : something occurring in 0.000 001% of the cases should occurr 70 times with 7 billions of cases. It will only appear 0,07 times with 7 millions of cases.

I'm pretty sure Fire Twii didn't even see a million OCs, so it would be a lost cause to compare with mankind.

Also, I, too, want to show our friend here, that we can all find originality in our creations, even if they look like others'. However, we shouldn't be that naive. If someone appropriates her art, we need to help that person too. We can't just sit there, turning a blind eye, acting like everything is okay, when someone had to steal an identity to be with a group of people. Denying is not the way to go.

Your OC looks great and something people can't copy is the work you put into it. I have found a ton of OCs with my same talent, several with very similar cutie marks and my OC is Red and Black of which there are hundreds and the color scheme comes with a stigma. But even so this OC is mine and that's what makes him important.

So don't worry too much about It I'm sure tons of other people run into the same issues we do. I have only been a member here for a few weeks and I have caught myself thinking about just how many people's OCs are blue, black or gray. Mostly Blue but literally if all our OCs made up the real population of Equestria then 85% would be blue, I guarantee they would be the majority.  At least we are not blue

Maybe rather than having her live in ponyville, which is very common, make her from a tough underused city like Fillydelpia(sp?) or Manehattan originally. She could be from a bad part of town but was born with compassion for those around her and wanted to change her home city for the better.

When she started school she was her messy fun loving self and could have been an optimist and idealist but that all changed as she learned the hard way, not every pony felt the same. Most of the ponies in her area were pessimistic and didn’t like her due to her attitude and as they teased her, her personality started to change.  She started to care less and think more like the other ponies and it lead her to give up on her ideas.

Perhaps go into how she made her only friend, I myself might do something like:

One day she sees someone bullying one of the ponies she knows from school but she was too scared to go defend them and wasn't sure she wanted to since that pony had bullied her before. But due to her sympathetic nature, she felt the needed to say something and used her magic to help the pony, thus earning her cutie mark and a friend.

Maybe having a friend helped turn her life around? It goes well with the theme of the show.

Due to her having her first friend she started to once again regain some confidence and with the support from each other she began to pursue magic and ended up learning the few spells she knows but then she ends up moving to

Ponyville and far from her only friend it which caused her to fall into her lonely state.

This could make her goal to now make new friends in Ponyville but her insecurities get in the way.

Really all I think I’m going is fleshing it out more not really changing it. I could come up with something entirely different if you want but you will have to give me a while. Maybe just fluffing it up would help out if you think this helped at all?
