Pewds F'ed Up, False DMCA's Ensue

Hazard Time

Before I begin, I should give full disclosure:

  1. I am not a subscriber of PewDiePie's.  I'm not a big fan of his content, and I don't watch his content that often, if at all.
  2. I do not condone the use of racial slurs or prejudice based on one's skin color or ethnicity.

Anyway, on to the meat of the article.  Recently, while PewDiePie was livestreaming PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, he was caught uttering a racial slur.  The video is below

https://oddshot.tv/s/g_05U6

First of all, as I said above, I don't condone the use of racial slurs, and if Pewds had used it casually, then I would have certainly shook my head and walked away.  However, after watching the video, it was clear from the context that PewDiePie was aggravated and wasn't thinking straight.  On top of that, there was an immediate apology afterwords.

Now, if this was all that happened, then there would be nothing really to say.  Some guy said a racial slur in a moment of stress, apologized for it, and everyone moved on.  However, I'm sure everyone here can guess that a comment like that simply doesn't slip under the radar of the internet, neither does it slip by the media.  In an article by Javy Gwaltney of Game Informer, Sean Vanaman and Campo Santo, the developer and studio behind Firewatch, respectively, have announced on Twitter that they will be taking action against PewDiePie by filing DMCA takedowns of all of his videos which feature their games.

This is the part where I become aggravated, myself.  Yes, PewDiePie fucked up, and as one of the most popular content creators on Youtube, he should be held accountable for the things that he says and does.  I wouldn't be surprised and I also wouldn't care if he loses ad revenue because of this latest scandal.

However, what makes me mad is the flagrant, open, and proud abuse of Youtube's DMCA flagging system by a professional developer.  I don't think Sean Vanaman understands that his copyright claims are completely illegal and unenforceable, and if he does understand this, then what exactly motivated him to pick a fight with a professional youtuber and millionairre who could easily win a legal battle if Sean decided to double down.  On top of that, I think PewDiePie realizes and understands that the media hates him now, and that there's simply no point for damage control.  Even more so, following his recent battle with the Wall Street Journal, his fanbase is more fanatical than ever.

I can see this ending in one of two ways: One, Sean Vanaman gets a cold, hard slap from reality and learns that his morals don't count for shit when you abuse the legal system, or he gets an even harder slap when PewDiePie hits him with a countersuit when the courts refuse to uphold his copyright strikes.  Hell, it could happen different, as well.  PewDiePie may actually just get fucked and social justice can applaud at having taken down a youtuber with a titanic fanbase.  In the end, however, I'm not really interested in what happens to Pewds.  Sean Vanaman's actions have soured whatever opinions I may have had of him, and I sincerely hope that his attempt to abuse an already overabused legal tool will blow up in his face.

Why the fuck would he do that?

TL;DR - "We're complicit in the toxicity of this industry, so we're going to fix that by filing spurious DMCA's against someone whose only crime is that their morals disagree with our own!"

Really I was talking about Pewds even saying the word lol

Ah, should have specified that, lol.

Honestly, while I don't know him that well, I think he just doesn't care anymore, especially with the MSM dogging him for everything that comes out of his mouth.  He has a fanbase of 50+ million people and not only did he survive a concerted smear campaign by the Wall Street Journal, but he came out of it even stronger.

In either case, it was an idiot move on his part, and he deserves the backlash he's receiving.  However, as you might have figured, I'm way more interested in someone abusing the legal system than what some asshole on the internet said. :D

PewDiePie saying racist shit? What's new? He is an asshole and a greedy attention whore.

Felix has been rapidly reaching into shock humor lately. But what was the Bolton line is that he just became another filthy frank carbon copy.

All of the fame and money only makes him want more. He is pathetic.

Right. He was okay in 2012-2013, but then greed him like an on coming train.

I don't see the problem with saying that n word especially in the context he used it in. Just because you use a racial slur doesn't mean that you're predominantly a racist, nevermind the fact that he was filed a DMCA complaint for it. Hell, by everyone going up in arms about this, you're just giving power to the racists, fueling the word and its shock factor; iDubbz's input on this, with his whole Tana Mongeau situation a while back is somewhat similar, "Either all of it is okay, or none of it is okay". Bottom line though, it's the internet; if you're going to be angry at someone for saying a word you don't like, you might as well close your laptop and go outside.

As if you never said something bad during gameplay? It's natural for people to say stupid stuff during a frustrating part of gameplay.

Anyway, i am defending pewds here, even if people might not look it that way. I feel like these days, people get more agrevated towards people saying the N word, then bloody murder. What kind of shit standards do we have people. Why is it that nobody gets offended towards people like Gamegrumps, who do racial or antisemetic jokes from time to time?

I swear, most people who are raging about this are probably not even black, because they probably have something better to do then wasting their time about minor stuff.

Pewds will be fine, since he made his money and he will be good for the rest of his life. Thank you very much.

if people want to call me a nazi for defending him, go ahead

This isn't the first time he has done something racist. I've never watched Gamegraumps so that is a non-factor for me.

Pewds is someone that I have absolutely no sympathy for.

Because Game Grumps tells jokes instead of just saying the n- word.

So, if i told you now that i said the n word 100 times before, am i a racist then?

I actually saw a black guy today saying that "My house is getting consumed by water from the hurricane. I get more important things to do then someone on the internet saying the N word."

Again, know your standards. People in the middle-east get stoned to death everyday, but we have to rage about an internet personality saying the N word. Give me a break.

The only reason he gets away with it is because he is an internet celebrity. It is typical shit. Anyone lesser would be crucified for doing some of the stuff that he does, but the super famous guy that plays video games, let's just let him be.

And that last point, that technically could be used against anyone's problems. "Oh, your car broke down? Get over it, middle eastern people get stoned every day!"

Yeah, we call that first world problems.

someone says the n-word and a white guy feels offended by it, while children in africa are starving.

How does PDP saying the N-Word affect the world, compared to more serious things happen. And for that matter, how is a broken down car the same as PDP saying the N-Word.

If you used it as an insult (like pewdiepie did) then I would say yes.

I can think about multiple things at once. I can try to help people in the middle east and think that the using the n word is racist.

It is the same if you use that logic. "You lost your job? Poor baby, you and your first world problems." You see where that becomes a slippery slope really fast? And PDP using that word, considering he is the largest channel on all of YouTube, he can have an influence to many, many people. People in general are stupid, gullible and sheep. All it takes is for their internet celebrity god to make something seem alright for them to do it as well.

The same can be said about everything else in this world. People are very guillable, yes. But You can't just say "He needs to be locked up because he said something i don't like." Because that in itself is a slippery slope.

I mean, i could say that CNN should be locked up for making laughable news, but i don't, because i just let people be guillible and stupid because everyone has the right to be. All i can do is making my comment about it and see what people think about it, even if it's not good.

I am not saying he should be locked up, he didn't do a crime like that. What I do think though is that he should be held accountable on a moral level.

During a video game. Where many people have many emotional outbreaks? Did you ever play games online? Besides, you're assuming and that in itself is also racist.

That not every black man gives a damn if you use the n-word and that white people like to defend them, even if they don't want to.

And thinking alot of things is not the same as doing them.

Well, that sounds all fine and good, but what would it bring? There are alot of people out there that already see him as a racist and an antisemetic and they don't seem to give a damn if he apologized and most of his fans don't care anyway.

If it's the kids you are worrying about, then i can only say that it's the parents fault for giving them access in the first place. PDPs content was never made for kids in mind anyway.

I do play games online quite often and I have never said anything racist in a emotional outbreaks since I was 12.

Also if you can't controll your emotions then perhaps you shouldn't livestream.

No it isn't. I'm not assuming anything based on his race and thus it isn't racist.

Yeah, one black man doesn't care, that means that we are all free to use the n word in any way we like.

But you are assuming something, even if you are not sure if he actually meant anything racist by it. Am i racist for saying the N-Word once then?

Don't you see the context? Not all black people care about what you say on a stream. I think it's rather insulting for black people, that white people need to defend them, eventhough everybody wants equality. I think PDP is even less racist, then the people who defend the black people.

This is the last post i make. I made my case and it's okay if you don't agree with me and i hope you don't take it personal. :)

I will just leave this clip here, because i really like it and i think it fits.
