Episode 74 - G5

I'm gonna say this only once.  Listen up, because, assuming that what we think we know about the G5 movie is accurate, this will by my first, last, and final word on G5, ever.

Y'know what really grinds my gears?  The fact that anyone actually thought it would be a good idea to take the world of Equestria at the end of FIM, feed it to a hippopotamus, wait til the hippo takes a sh*t, then scoop up the sh*t, smear it all over a movie screen and call it good.

Okay, what in Tartarus am I talking about?  What am I so bent out of shape about?  I'm talkin' about this movie synopsis where Equestria is now a magic-less, riven world where pony species live in isolation, fearful and suspicious of each other.  Now, if this had been a clean reboot with absolutely no connection or affiliation to G4 whatsoever, then I'da said "SIGN ME UP!"  Sounds like a good plot.  But if what we think we know is true, then this is G4 Equestria in the future, some indeterminate amount of time after FIM.  How could they think it would be a good idea to sully and tarnish the ending to FIM so badly?  The pony species have reverted to pre-Hearth's Warming status?  F*ckin' bullsh*t, man.  No.  Just no.

I realize that things can't be all sugar and rainbows all the time, and they need to come up with some sort of conflict, but not like this.  Twilight's (and her friends') legacy was uniting all of the species of the world in friendship.  That was the underlying arc of the entire show.  And even if they came up with a plausible reason to have yaks, griffons, hippogriffs, changelings, and dragons all turn against ponies, to have the three pony species turn against each other is beyond the pale.  The three pony species have been united for well over a millennium.  That unity is the non-negotiable cornerstone, bedrock foundation for this world.  To have that fall apart, realistic though it may be in real life, is just too tragic to watch.  It shouldn't happen in this universe.  This is too far.  I won't watch everything that FIM built be unraveled and destroyed like that.  I simply won't do it.

Now, I'm leaving myself an out, and open door in case I/we are mistaken.  If someone comes back and tells me that G5 is an entirely separate timeline or dimension or something, and that the G4 paraphernalia around Sunny's room was just Easter eggs, then fine.  Okay.  I'll happily watch it.  But if it is in  fact as we believe, that it's the same Equestria in the future, then I'm done.  I'm never watching it or saying another word about it, or even acknowledging its existence ever again.  I'm out.  Later.

*EDIT*  And now it's happened.  The main banner of MLPF is G5.  It's come to this.  It's all over.  :(  How long will it be before every emoticon is G5?  How long will it be before all G4 content is archived to some dank basement ten clicks in?  Sadness.  Much sadness.

I agree, I don't like that they just changed the sad (for me), but good ending of G4 into sad and awful future. I can't think of a reason to to that, that is, a reason that I would like. I can only come up with reasons that I don't like (say, putting real-world politics into the show).

G4 had nothing to do with previous generations, why has G5 to be in the same universe as G4?

One thing I like about G5 is the names of the characters - the names in G4 were too "fitting" and, as such, unrealistic.

Bingo.  I feel like the writers just took a look around and said, "Whelp, the world is riven by politics and everyone is divided and hates everyone else, so let's just do that!"  Bad idea.

I can't argue with that.  I always wished that more of the G4 names had been actual names, and not just descriptions of their personalities or even just their literal cutie mark, things that their parents wouldn't, and couldn't, have known when they were born.  I mean, I don't want the ponies to just be named Steve, Bill, Mary, Susan, Karen, Ashley, etc.  I want whimsical names that fit the magical lore, and I like the native American style naming convention that many of them used where the name is a phrase that describes how they look or something, but many of the names were lazy, and it annoyed me when the name was just their cutie mark.  I mean, Silver Spoon?  Diamond Tiara?  Snips?!  Snails?!  So, did their parents have a crystal ball, or did the pony just decide that their life's purpose/special talent would just be their friggin' name?

Or even names like in the show that do not match. For example, switch the personalities of Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, but keep their names. Otherwise, yeah, it seems too fitting as if naming the ponies would influence what they will be good at and their personalities.

Oh yeah, I wonder if there's going to be a reference to Trump (or, well, a pony who loosk like Trump) as being the reasons everyone is so divided.

I really do not want real-world politics in a fantasy show about cute ponies. I can watch the news for real-real world politics or I can watch TV shows that do make politics one of the main themes (Babylon 5, Deep Space 9, The Expanse).

And while we're on the subject, how about the fact that all of the animals (meaning the animal animals, non-sapient) in FIM have more normal names than the ponies.  Seriously, they gave all of the animals at Fluttershy's sanctuary normal human names.  Sandra the wolf, Clementine the Giraffe, Muriel the elephant, Antoine the python.  Why do the animals have better names?!  Lol.

Oh yeah. Though, I guess, in questria names like Sandra are considered to be "for animals", similar to how humans have names for their pets that they would not use for another human (I hope).

However, pony names are not that bad by themselves, I just don't like that they match the pony too well. It feels like the pony is a character, created for a story (wihch, of course, they are) with their name, profession, appearance and personality determined at the same time, instead of someone real, who was born, given name by their parents and only later developed personality and chose a profession. Or do ponies go "well, my name is Dust Bin, I guess I should be a janitor"? But then it raises the question what kind of parents name their child "Dust Bin".

:ButtercupLaugh:  Exactly.  Lol.  How about the firewood salespony named Burnt Oak?  There's another prime example!  *Eyeroll*

It's almost like you're watching a children's cartoon.

Hmm.  Yes... almost...

I've said it before and I'll say it again: our over-analysis of the show is their own damn fault for making it so damn good!

I think you should at least give it a shot, I think not giving it because it's connected to FiM is a bit shallow, the movie was fantastic.
