Episode 89 - Autoplay
Hey. Y'know what really grinds my gears? Autoplay.
I f*cking hate autoplay it all its forms. I never want anything to play until I tell it to play. I will tell my devices what to play and when, not the other way around, got it??!!
Some autoplay features can be disabled, but some not. Netflix has the most annoying autoplay feature of all time, which as far as I can tell cannot be disabled. When you look at anything, just to read the description, it starts playing the Celestia damned thing after about three frigging seconds! You don't even have time to read what it is! And Celestia help you if you let it play for more than five seconds, cuz then it will be stuck in your queue forever, telling you to watch the next episode. I mean, seriously, why the flipping f*ck can't I even read the description without it playing?! And once it starts playing, the UI or the HUD or whatever you want to call it fades away, so you can't even continue to read the description while it's playing. Call me crazy, but sometimes I actually want to read the whole description without being rushed before I decide whether or not to watch something. And I always like to check out how many season/episodes there are in a series before I decide to start so that I know what I'm getting myself into. The only way to read the description on Netflix is to tap the directional control up and down repeatedly to keep the UI active so it doesn't fade out. It's still gonna play after three seconds, so you still have to read with the frigging thing playing behind it. So f*cking ridiculous.
And another thing! I don't want suggestions, either. Don't tell me what you think I should watch based on my history. Don't suggest things to me. Don't try to get to know me. F*ckin algorithm. How dare you. F*ck you. Don't tell me to watch those live action Cowboy Bebop and Last Airbender abominations because I watched the real shows. The gall. The audacity. Don't you try to learn me and figure me out. F*ckin machine learning sh*t. Here's how it works: I tell you what I want to watch. I search for what I want. Not the other way around. Got it?!!
Now, that's easy to accomplish on a web browser where you can just set the browser to purge history on close and use things signed-out, which is the only way I use youtube, but it's a little harder for things like Netflix or Steam. No way to avoid those things learning you and feeding you suggestions. I hate it. I want every device, every app, every thing to just be a fresh start every time I open it, no history, no learning, no suggestions, and no autoplay. I search for what I WANT, and it plays when I SAY SO. That's how it should be.
