In a world... without pony generators.

Just think about it. If someone didn't come along and create those pony generators that pump out OC's. We'd have more art, much more original characters, money flowing through artists.

With actual artwork being rendered, we wouldn't have deviantart full of those OC's... I'm here to personally say, "creating a generated pony and uploading it isn't art".

Her name is Purple Dash, she flies 20x faster than rainbow dash, and is more powerful than celestia and luna combined. (See where these things go?) She is also an expert contortionist and she has a full body birthmark making her SUPER UNIQUE!

I am sure by now you are looking at me going, "this guy isn't thinking about the people who can't afford to get their OC drawn". Well I'm getting there. All over the internet (this forum even) people like to do free requests, it's as simple as, "wanna draw my character?".

So that's my rant for today.

Got me at the expert contortionist. Sincerely made me chuckle that did. The problem with making art is that it requires some form of study, that if you want to make it look half decent and at least technically accurate.

To me for something to qualify as "art" it would have to display technical skill and conceptual investment or overt messages (political or otherwise).

Example of this would probably be....Banksy...well known Modern English Graffiti artist. His stuff is not only technical in skill but it normally has some overt message, perhaps not the most original or in depth messages but he still communicates ideas via a fun and new way that display true technical talent. Because of that, almost nothing on Deviantart qualifies as art to me. Maybe commercial art if it display technical skill since it made to look nice and grasp an audience. Most of the stuff I see is purely drawn for fun, a hobbyist past time.

Too many people these days are coddled in art class and use it's "their style" to worm out of the sheer inability to master drawing. Drawing requires frankly getting insulted alot if you want it to be taken seriously at all by anyone who knows at least a little about the subject and because of it visual nature this rejection and ridicule can take both a verbal but actual visual decrying of a persons work-red lining for example-

I think that's one of the major factors people don't draw, they don't want to open themselves to critique even if they know they are bad and it merely to help them pen out stuff for their future ideas. Pony generator offers a cheap and dirty visualizer for ideas as well as a bail out for possible criticism. But because my own qualifications for art are specific do not mean others is, they may still treat them harshly like anything that is claiming to be art under their own personal idea of what can fall under it and thus try to claim itself as such by doing so.

Terms of writing well. That just people writing for immediate emotional satisfaction and not a good story. Alot of people have an idea of the "rule of cool" (fudging something to allow something awesome to take place) but don't understand how sparingly it must be used, when it is appropriate in terms of source material and just add all the "cool" stuff together in their one character. Defacto making it a hilarious Mary sue. Other times it's nothing more than author self insert.

Glad you understand my point and look to the reasons why and why not.

I know not many people want to be critiqued, but they should.  And as stated, there are so many other artists willing to do the work for them it's not even funny.  We have a huge request section just for that.

And most certainly there are other styles that may not be considered "art" by one viewer.  But if you look at the overall medium, eventually there is a meaning to it.

But you are most certainly right; nobody wants to get hurt, but without a harsh critique, you will never get any better at what you do.

Pony generators are the death of creativity within this god-damn fandom.

They're good for mapping out an idea of what your character should look like, not for actually using.
