  1. I did not understand that at all but y'know whatever....

The 9 intelligences proposed by Howard Gardner were a new attempt at figuring out how a person thinks, in the hope of making a more tailored educational experience for students. He was a Harvard psychologist who realised that people think differently, and in order to most effectively teach, you need to learn how your students brains work. In practice, providing assessments for students would obviously be too inefficient, so his ideas were never put into full practice. But it is still possible to find variations of his 9 intelligences test, to determine where your strongest type of thinking will be.

Here is a link, so you can try, if you want.

  2. I had never really thought about that. I am a very advanced math student but I just don't ever think this way. Like a mathematician. Brohoof to you sir.

Thanks. I think one thing I have to thank is the fact that all 9 of my multiple intelligences have an equal rating of 8 on one test, and all falling between 4 and 5 on a different test.. I suppose my thinking is Balanced, so I can think in multiple ways at a given time.

  3. *snip*

I have a few points. First of all, people are complaining about the lax plot because the premiere was so freaking epic, and set  the expectations of an overarching plot. To see this plot alluded to at the start of the episode, but not expounded upon, was but one reason the episode left something to be desired.

Regarding the entertainment value and the cliches in one point, as I mentioned, this cliche has been done many other times in many shows and movies, and got far more laughter out of me in those than in the MLP incarnation. I think the reason the humour failed to deliver is because, in the other cliche-based episodes, there was still a unique MLP spin on it. But in Castle Mane-ia, there didn't seem to be any uniquely MLP-type humour in this episode. They just recreated the archetype of this cliche with ponies instead of people.

The characters in themselves were nice, but I don't feel that their different reactions to the spooks were very unique reactions. Other cliches worked because of MLP's characters responding uniquely to these classical stimuli. But there is not much variety in the ways you can depict characters getting spooked, so the ponies had stereotypical reactions, as opposed to more unique responses like in the other cliche episodes.

And in other spooky-castle attempts, so much more was done, in terms of the characters causing mass chaos throughout the episode. In the MLP version, it is just the 3 different groups, but they don't meet until the very end, as opposed to other spooky-castles where the groups bump into each other and cause chaos multiple times.

    Thank you so much! yayayay!

  4. NUUUUUUUU! YOU CAN'T GET RID OF PINKIE!!!!!!!!!

Anyway I do not at all like shipping, but my least favorites are same sex shipping, especially among the mane six, and OC/cannon shipping. Both just seem wrong on so many levels.

Any particular reason as to why same sex shippings are wrong on so many levels? Please enlighten me. Just message me the answer, because we shouldn't start a debate here.

  5. I like reading more in-depth analyses like this one, and I've done a few of them myself.

Your calculation is largely predicated on the theory that three human years have passed since Sunset Shimmer first went through the portal and when Twilight went through the portal, and that theory, as far as I can tell, is based on the fact that we see that Sunset Shimmer was crowned Princess of the Fall Formal for three years.

First, that theory still leaves a fairly wide margin of error for the human time elapsed between openings of the portal; it could be significantly different than three years if, say, Sunset Shimmer first went through the portal sometime close to the end of the school year and waited a few months (or longer) before starting high school and first winning the vote for Princess of the Fall Formal.

Also, do we know that the time that Twilight entered the portal is the first time that the portal has opened since Sunset Shimmer first went through it? Or could it be that the portal has opened and closed several times in between, and Sunset Shimmer, say, just wasn't ready to go back through it yet? Those are just a couple of potential issues that I thought of which your theory would have to account for.

There was another forum member who made a topic a while ago with an entertaining theory of what Celestia and Luna really do when they "raise the sun" and "raise the moon", since it would be extremely unrealistic for them to actually move the sun and moon around the planet. That topic can be found here.

True, we cannot know for sure if this is the case. But it certainly makes sense. and if a moon means a moon cycle, which is the most likely definition, 10 moons in a year is not a far cry for the 12 moons we are used to. It just seems to make sense.

  6. I loved this episode and was happy to watch early. :3

Rainbow Dash covering her face with her wings... :3

Well, it seems Rarity isn't living up to her element again =P

Also, who was at the end? Any ideas? D:

As said before, the shadow seems to resemble Starswirl somewhat, so maybe.

Otherwise, again on the Rarity thing? I think people are completely off. I mean, while Rarity's motivation was not purely generosity, it certainly wasn't greed. Rarity's motivation was mostly artistic. She wanted to do it out of love for beauty for beauty's sake. She wanted to restore the former glory of forgotten beauty, giving her time to bring a wonder back into the world, which is generous if you ask me. The only thing that be construed as greed is "it could also be the inspiration for a new line." However, this is a very brief statement, and it is evident from other scenes that this one motivation is at the very back of her mind.

The primary drives were a love of beauty and a desire to bring a wonder back into the world out of sheer love of beauty, and a desire to share it with others. If she were greedy, she would repair the tapestries, make her dresses, and tell nopony about them, so it looks like the ideas were hers alone. But this is not the case. She intends to share knowledge of the tapestries with the world. I don't doubt that, once her new line were to come out, she would also reveal the restored tapestries, stating that these glamourous works of art were her inspiration, and that everypony should admire them as much, if not more than her work. Hence, generous.

  7. Moons likely means days, as in the times you've seen the moon go by through the sky.

Nuuuu. Because that means 3 apple reunions in a year, and means Discord's reign was only a few years in the past (thousands of moons. It would be nearly a half million if a moon were a day).

  8. Time probably just goes by years and they use the mathematical amount of years as moons. So, that could be how time is in Equestria.

Nu. Because that means apple family reunions happen every 100 years, and Discord's reign was many thousands of years ago, when we know it was only slightly longer than 1,000 years ago.

  9. I found this episode somewhat disappointing after the pure epicness of episodes 1 & 2.

    1) The humour fell somewhat flat. In a crazy castle with traps and passageways, much more hilarity could've been pulled off, as seen in other castle encounters from other media. THe jokes were pretty stale, and even Pinkie's randomness seemed less funny than usual. Not sure why, but something about the attempted humour just didn't tickle my funny bone much. i got some chuckles, but nowhere near as much as I would expect when compared to other comedy episodes from the series.

    2) The characterisations were mostly good. It was nice to see Twily stepping up as a leader at the end. The AppleDash dynamic (not shipping) went very well and added some level of action to the episode. Pinkie was random, and while less funny than usual, still delivered. Rarity, despite what everypony else says, I thought was not greedy, but rather showed an appreciation and respect for fine art, and also some level of generosity in giving up her free time, and risking great fright to try and create something beautiful for others to admire for free. The only characterisation that failed was Fluttershy. They took the cute scaredy-cat we're used to and made her into a nagging worry-wort, and it was like a constant throbbing on my ear drums whenever Fluttershy spoke.

    3) The plot of this episode in and of itself, fell incredibly short. There was nowhere near as much world-building as there was potential for. The journal could've given far more insight than it did. The storyline following the 5 ponies (besides Twilight) consisted entirely of the ponies randomly running around and getting spooked at various turns, which would have been fine, if done correctly. But as I said under humour, an ancient labyrinthine spooky ruin plot has been done many times before, and in other cases provided much more humour than I saw here It did not live up to past incarnations of a similar plot. As such, the merit the plot could have had just wasn't there. Again, potential, but failed potential.

    4) In terms of the grand scheme of Season 4, this episode did a good job. While it's internal plot was lacking, to say the least, it did set two new story precedents, while also making sure to call back to what was laid down at the end of the premiere. My fear was that the writers, in experimenting with a new story structure, would trip up, not knowing that there should at least be a reference in every episode to the overall plot. But they did not. They made sure to remind us that something bigger will be happening this season, while also setting the two new story elements of the "pony of shadows" and the journal. If they keep adding new elements each episode like this, the finale will prove to be very EPIC. Although, I would state that the journal could have been introduced a bit better.

So overall, I think that the episode in and of itself was okay. The characterisation was great, but the humour and plot fell flat, making a net individual rating of meh. But in terms of contribution to overall story, this episode did smashingly, and the hype for season 4 is increased. I just hope that in the future, the writers remember the importance of having a solid mini-plot in each episode.

  10. Didn't the season 4 premiere retcon this line?  I'm assuming the Summer Sun celebration is yearly, so I'd assume that the season 4 premiere takes place one year after the season 1 premiere.  The 100 moons line would indicate that the reunion was taking place either 100 days or several years past the season 1 premiere.  Either sounds completely ludicrous, unless you infer that Apple Family Reunion takes place at a much earlier time than the other season 3 episodes.  In a way, it DOES have a much more season 1-ish vibe and structure than a lot of other season 3 episodes.

That was the whole debate we were having. This whole Apple Family Reunion thing was the point of contention. And the point EquestrianScholar and I were trying to make was that there was obviously a continuity screw-up on the writer's part, because the Season 3 episode implies that it is Apple Bloom's first reunion, but theoretically it shouldn't be, if we count the season 1 episode.

As such, using the Apple Family Reunion as a gauge of time won't work, because the show's continuity fails regarding the reunion. You can't use self-cancelling statements to prove anything. That's why I said we shouldn't consider the reunion when determining how time works in Equestria. It is a glaring inconsistency in the chronology of the show. Everything else works perfectly with the value of 36.524 days for one moon.

  11. A moon can't be a week. Otherwise the 100 moons between reunions would be slightly over two years. And again, precisely one year has passed over the course of the show. Therefore, a week is too long to be a moon (unless you accept the glaring fact that the writers screwed up regarding the reunions, and they are null to the discussion).

And you ask where we are getting the idea that the S3 reunion is the only official one, since it is Apple Bloom's first. Throughout the episode, numerous lines of dialogue imply that AB has never experienced a reunion before. I won't point all of them out, as there are too many.

Gah, I give up, believe what you want to believe.

In real life the moon cycle is around a month, in the show it has been stated Applebloom has only been to one true Apple Family Reunion and analyzing the Season 4 pilot it at least strongly suggests its only been 1 year.

Take that as you will I'm done.

I'm honestly okay with the idea that they have a truly major family reunion every eight years because of how busy they all are.

Mm, except my math points out that it's every 10 years. Equestrian moon cycles are longer than ours, at 36.524 days between New Moons.

They could be making reference to a "full moon," or any specific equestrian moon cycle.  There are 12.37 full moons every year, so if their system is anything like ours then a reunion should occur once every 8.08 years, or approximately once every 8 years.

TBH, I think granny smith has just lost her marbles.

    "I'm nutty!"

Or another way you could think of it to force it to make sense is that there is a full moon in Equestria every 3.65 days  (assuming they have a 365 day year).  This way, in 100 full moons, a full year would have passed.

Wouldn't work, because there are still phases to the moon. If it were a full moon every 3.65 days, it would mean there would be more than one phase over the course of a single night.

  12.   Do you really think you can convince me by repeating some obvious things?

Have you even tried to find the answers on that three cuestions?

    I don't think so.

YES they are obvious! They obviously show that one year has passed since the start of Season 1. Which you said was wrong. Would you not be convinced by obvious logic?

And why didn't I answer the questions? Because they are moot, irrelevant, and unnecessary. They do not change the fact that the whole reunion argument is null. I know that there were two reunions. But what I am trying to get through to you is that, in the discussion of moons the reunions are an irrelevant, and completely null argument, because they contradict each other. They are a bubbling and hideous inconsistency in the plot. The statements made in each episode completely go against what the other says. As such, they are moot, since they contradict each other.

  13. I patiently wait for the proof to that.

And no. Her Highness never said that current SSC was the first since the return of NM.

She may mean that it is the first SSC Luna participates in.

Oh my Guthix. Are you serious?

It is simple. There is ONE Summer Solstice per year, at around the same time every year. Hence, there is one year between two Summer Solstices- so one year between the Summer Solstice in season 1 and the Summer Solstice in season 4.

And you ignore my point about the reunion again.

  14. ORLY?

Occam's Razor dictates to find the simplest explonation for all facts.

Because I don't see any "inherent contradiction". So, you can use bold as much as you want - it doesn't make your argument stronger.

The inherent contradiction is that in S1E1, AJ claims that it is a family reunion, but in "Apple Family Reunion," we have the statement that it is Apple Bloom's first reunion. These two statements are contradictory, so they cancel out.

You have stated the obvious. Your point being?

The point there is that one year has passed since S1E1. The Summer Sun Celebrations make it a FACT that one year has passed, which you state is not the case.

  15. No. I keep telling you, that "ONE year" is not a fact. It was never stated directly.

Yes. And no, they are not a masterpiece of logic.

The Summer Sun Celebration is a yearly occurrence. There is only 1 per year. And it is on the longest day of each year, meaning it would be around the same time every year. Occam's Razor would dictate that we should treat Equestria as a standard system, and not assume that for some reason the solstices work differently there.

And I love how you completely ignore my point about the inherent contradiction in the statement which you are using to argue, making it null.

You are masterful at selectively arguing sir.

And no, they aren't masterpieces of logic, because it is very simple math which anypony would understand.

  16. Sorry, man, but you just flatter yourself.

    Not this again...

Just do the fact checking already.

    Three simple questions for you:

    1. How many ponies were at first AFR?

    2. How many were at second?

    3. How many attend usually?

You can easily find answers on all three questions.

*sigh* You keep forgetting. If we accept that both reunions count it would mean that there are two reunions in ONE year? So every apple in Equestria gets together twice a year?

Further, you are ignoring the fact that the episodes in question inherently contradict each other. In Episode 1, AJ claims that the Family Reunion just ended, yet in "Apple Family Reunion," we get the statement that this is Apple Bloom's first reunion. So which is correct? Since you can't make a determination, the only logical thing to do is ignore contradictory statements. You insist on using this point, but any standards of argumentation and refutation through logic would all agree that contradictory statements are both invalid if neither can be proven.

Regarding my math- did you read my calculations? They work for every other dispute of time on the show, except for the Apple Family Reunion which, as I keep trying to explain, is a null argument.

Look why are we making this complicated? A moon cycle is around a mouth, a little under 30 days, as such why is it so hard to accept that a mouth is approximately equal (≈) to a moon. The math given above closely follows this with a little over 36 days equaling a moon, just having it be around 6-7 days longer.

Thank you for your support. Declan's only point which could refute my math is his use of the Apple Family Reunion as a gauge of time, but as I keep trying to explain, the series contradicts itself regarding the family reunion, so it can't be considered a valid measurement.
