  1. My guess is that she will have a plot centric role. I see them using her as a catalyst in the rising action. Possible helping with the actual resolution. This can be done without voicing the character.  So, key role but no voice. Probably the best way to handle using her that has the least likelihood of causing fan rage.

  2. Sometimes what is "manly" and "girly" changes, the color pink for example used to be considered a boys color.

Nods. The Nazi's turned pink into a color associated with homosexuality.

I have no hard evidence to add to the horse/pony discussion other than to say that I suspect that the transition in the USmay have been a post WW2 issue. I mean, Teddy Roosevelt sure as hell didn't believe horses were just for girls. Neither did most of the literary writers, and media in the first half of the 20th century. I would wager that there was a gradual commercial transition, maybe marketing excess horses toys to girls when war and space toys replaced cowboys in the 50's and 60's.

  3. I was raised that the definition of being manly was not hitting women and children, not allowing a vice to control your life, always be neighborly, be understanding of others opinion, not being a push over, always provide for your family, and learn about everything you can ...

My Dad never said nothin' about 'don't watch cartoons about pink ponies'.

Because I know how to fix my car without consulting a manual does not make me 'manly'. Because I LOVE seeing my Eagles win against a division rival does not make me 'manly'. Having a shaved head does not make me manly. My enjoyment of Guinness does not make be 'manly'.  These are all just things I do. They do not define me nor do they define me ideal self.

This question is also not accurate. Enjoying My Little Pony shouldn't define or diminish what you feel about yourself. I have never heard anyone say, "My love for Fluttershy makes me manly." I have seen this, "Just because I like this show does not mean I'm not manly."

    World of difference.

  4. Don't know if we are talking about hardware, operating systems, customer service, consumer outreach, ecosystems, macroeconomics, ethics, etc. And what era specifically?

Apple, in all of their verticals and divisions, runs the gamut from amazing to garbage. The Hardware is a little overpriced, but solid. The ecosystem is great for the consumer, but if you have ever had to design an app APN for them, you may not feel the same way.

Then again, I'm not a fanboy, and when faced with a PC vs Mac ... I still choose a custom PC (though I need a Mac for Publisher).

  5. Alicorns should not be written or treated to me omnipotent beings, no. The show cannon has already show that they aren't, thank God. Making a character too strong reduces the element of danger with them. This happened with Jedi in the Star Wars books, Superman in the 70's and 80's, just to name a few. Eventually writers realized that it is hard to create suspense when a hero is too God like. Superman is depowered and Jedi were written as very flawed in the Star Wars prequels.

Celestia isn't really written as omnipotent anyway. On occasion she has come across is almost ... well ... useless. One of my favorite moments in the series is the Season 2 finale when she was smacked down hard, and technically Nightmare Moon could have won the duel if Celestia didn't 'Form Blazing Sword' on her.

  6. Merchandise related spoilers are old news though. I remember back in '86 when Rodimus Prime hit the shelves with the description of Autobot Leader.

Then there was the freaking track title on The Phantom Menace OST that someone had the bright idea to name "Funeral of Qui-Gonn"

I do agree that expos meant for the benefit of resellers should prevent public distribution of photos, but in this day and age that is nigh impossible.

  7. At this point it appears that the Brony community has had a significant impact on the show continuing. Typically, cartoons with a very targeted demographic and market like MLP:FIM run into a diminishing returns issue in merchandise. Two somewhat connected reasons for this: the original audience ages out of the show, and young children have gatekeepers (parents) who also influence taste evolution in children by discouraging purchase repetition. Basically, the parents of a five year old girl would likely NOT be buying merchandise for the same properties four years later when she is nine. Parents (whether intentionally or not) do try to evolve the tastes of their children by purchasing age appropriate toys and merchandise. Also, the revenue pool of the targeted audience are individuals who do not have their own source of income.

Now, enter the teen and adult fans of the show. While are tastes still change in teens and adults, they do not occur as rapidly as what you see from 5-9 or 9-12. The only outside influences would be spouses/significant others. Finally, we have expendable income. I sure as hell do not need to ask my parents for a Vinyl Trixie from welovefine.com. At the worst I have to deal with a sigh from the wife. I have no real gatekeeper I have to convince to buy merchandise. If you went back in time and removed all the money funneled into Hasbro from the adult fans and you have a seismic shift in revenue... and a show that would NOT have a 5th season coming.

Now, Hasbro gets this, but they are not leveraging it as much as they could be (but that is another topic that seems to frustrate most of you)

  8. What we would see is real wrath of God type stuff from the fans. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes... the dead rising from the grave!

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

It actually might be interesting to see a 'temporary' Alicorn Mane 6, if only to see some of their reactions to having wings and horns. Pinkie Pie with magic AND her ability to seemingly warp the fabric of reality would be insane.

  9. This is still an issue? I know it was back in 2010-2012 ... but still? Sorry I just recently became enthralled with the show and thought that things may have improved.

And no, my parents don't know ... mostly because my tastes in entertainment are not really a discussion point. I don't even know if I've ever told them I watched Breaking Bad or was furious about the How I Met Your Mother finale. I guess it's less of an issue when your parents are also grandparents and it's been twenty years since you lived with them. They know both my daughters love the show though. Grandkids know how to milk that merch cow.

  10. What if I told you, according to Lauren Faust herself, that during those 1000 years Celestia was spending time on the moon trying to free her sister from Nightmare Moon's control but failed at every turn? Really, the whole point of the season 1 pilot was a desperate gambit from Celestia to save her sister from Nightmare Moon by finding new elements of harmony bearers to use them.

Also, I also find it hard to feel sorry for her when she tried to usurp and dethrone her sister because she decided to consort with daemons for control of the kingdom.

Makes sense considering Celestia was obviously torn by having to banish her (just finally got to Season 4 on Sunday). I actually kind of like that ... a lot.
