if you compare ponies to ferals in furry lore you get quite a lot in common... they're both fully-animal-shaped,they're both sapient, and they're both strongly personalized by their respective owners/creators. Ponies are based strictly on the show, but ferals can belong to a great number of shows or none nice they are focused around non-anthro characters which can vary widely. so while many furries and bronies seem to strongly reject the idea, I honestly think bronies are a furry subgenre too. But that's just me.

I didn't get to see what happened to said thread but, as a fellow brony who got herself a brony fellow mate all I can say is that you can do it without being organized about it. Hell, I met him on facebook on a group chat and we just hung out a lot and shamelessly flirted with each other for a couple of months 1st jokingly then getting bit by bit serious about it until we eventually said 'what the heck? Let's try make it happen' and it's been happening for the past 2,5 years :> If you really want to meet somepony special just hang out with other ponies and be chill about it. You'll find someone eventually. ^^ (just be sure you know the ages of the people you hang out with just in case some 12 yo proves to be a bit more maturely thinking and get you in a pretty unhealthy kind or a relationship :v )
