Just finished Dragon Quest V. Not as brilliant as the third and fourth game, but that's kind of like comparing the other parts of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure to Parts III and IV. I know nothing's topping them.

@DivineLover1000 It's not on par with classic Final Fantasy, but it's still a great series. I hold the third and fourth game in pretty high regard and have a guilty pleasure for the first and second despite I's excessive grinding and II's cheap, artificial difficulty.

@DivineLover1000 Indeed I have!
I've played I, Chain of Memories, and II. I didn't stay into the franchise after that though because while I was initially really interested in III, the underwhelming reaction to it really turned me off after we had waited for so long. 
Of course, I have to judge things for myself from what I actually play, but this is also around the time I was getting more into checking out non-Square/non-Nintendo RPG franchises like Megami Tensei and Souls. I just really love JRPGs all around.
