okay, so we've finally got some more information bout the starters, and it's only made my decision even more difficult. the following contains spoilers for scarlet and violet. I've kept it under a spoiler tag for those who dont want to see it til the games come out:
SpoilerI just found that it has the same BS mechanics as Legends Arceus, where if you over-level your pokemon, they wont listen to you, even if it has your trainers OT. that's f*cking stupid. I understand they want to make this more challenging, but I like to over-level my pokemon so I dont end up in a sticky situation.
now, I'm debating which is better? a tank that is slow but powerful? (skeledirge) or a glass cannon that hits hard, but has paper thin defenses? (Meowscarada)
Well, if you're still having trouble deciding which starter are you gonna pick for scarlet and violet, well, this should give you a run-down of what they're able to learn via by level up / TM, their abilities, their stats, and their egg moves.
Link: https://pastebin.com/pghsfRYm
- Quaquaval has got a signature move that boosts its speed by one stage, is able to learn swords dance via by TM, and it learns close Combat and Acrobatics. Oh, and its hidden ability is moxie, so IF it gets the chance to use swords dance AND it uses its signature move, it's over. even without its hidden ability, it's extremely overpowered.
- despite the fact that Meowscarada gets Protean as a hidden ability, it has been nerfed to the point that it'll only activate ONCE per battle, so you're better off sticking with overgrow, and if you take a look at its moveset, it doesnt really learn that much. not only that, it doesnt have a way to boost its attack. I've used a delphox and a lucario in the past with a similar attack stat (in this case, special attack stat) and if the move is not super effective against the opponent, it will not kill, and with those average defense stats, it's more than likely gonna be revenge killed. that's not to say meowscarada is bad. it gets an OP signature move that never misses and always crits, so I guess that makes up for the nerf to protean, and it learns night slash, play rough, and it gets thunder punch and brick break via by TM. so, it has a way to deal with fighting types, steel types and flying types, depending on which move you go for.
- ...and last but not least, Skeledirge. if you take a look at its stats, it is pretty similar to slowbro, and we know how bulky that thing is. it gets Unaware as a hidden ability, which ignores the opponents' stat boosts, and it gets slack off as an egg move, which is HUGE!!! even without its hidden ability, it has a way to cover up its weaknesses. It has access to Will-O-Wisp (which cuts the opponents' attack in half and it does chip damage), Snarl (a base 55 dark type move that lowers the opponents' special attack), and a signature move that boosts its special attack by one stage.
...and because of the level restrictions, it can pretty much stall out the opponent and dish out heavy damage and still be a viable member of the team, even if it doesnt have slack off or its hidden ability. instead, you can go for Hex. it becomes a massive 135 base power ghost type move when the opponent is burned. According to the serebii type chart, it covers all of the types and hits the vast majority of 'em for neutral damage.
if I had to come up with a moveset for each, this is what I'd go for:
Quaquaval
- Swords Dance
- Aqua Step
- Close Combat
- Acrobatics
Meowscarada
- Flower Trick
- Night Slash
- Play Rough
- Brick Break
Skeledirge
- Will-O-Wisp
- Torch Song
- Snarl
- Slack Offso yeah, it comes down to which one do you prefer? do you want a glass cannon that hits hard but has paper thin defenses? (Meowscarada and Quaquaval) or a wall that is slow but powerful? (Skeledirge) so, you're probably wondering which starter am I gonna pick? well, it's a toss-up between Sprigatito and Fuecoco.
