SpoilerC! A short period comet is defined as any comet with an orbital period of 200 years or less. Halley’s Comet has an orbital period of 75 years, Comet Encke’s is about 3.3 years, Comet Swift-Tuttle comes in at about 133 years. Comet Hale-Bopp’s orbital period is about 2,533 years, which is considerably shorter than before it’s last periapsis, but still long enough to be considered a long period comet. Before that, it was most likely once every 4,200 years.
