To be honest, Pinkie Pie is kind of right when she says that Maud and Mud don't have as much in common.

On the surface they certainly look similar, but Mud has an arrogant air to him that Maud does not have. Think it's that "technically" quirk of his. While Maud is certainly awkward, she's more awkward in the lack of emotive perspective; Mud is awkward in the "socially awkward nerd who thinks he knows everything about the world" perspective.
