  1. It appears that you took vectors from the show and edited them. Took at fluttershy's back legs. They do not match with her coat color on everything else. The flat vector work darkened the far legs to give an illusion of depth, and that doesn't quite work when you neglected to get rid of a trick that only works with 2d in something that aims to be 3d. You also forgot to remove the line work from Fluttershy's face.

Also, where is your light source on fluttershy? Look at all the light areas and think about the possible light sources lighting those areas up. The legs suggest a light in front of her, her body suggests one in the background, her wing suggests one from above, and her mane and tail suggests light sources from our right and left.

  2. The wing seems to be fluttering a little too fast in my opinion. Not much, but just enough to where it feels inconsistent with the rest of the animation. As in the body's moving fairly slowly in comparison to the wings, which are moving really fast, almost as if it's a humming bird. Aside from that, the frame rate is pretty good, I have no problems with that. I'd just say slow down the wings animation by about 1 or 2 (at max) fps if you can and try that out. (Let me see if you decide to try that, I'd be curious if whether or not it looks smoother or not.)

[/edit] Actually considering the smear in the animation it may not work as well I thought. . . .

The solution isn't to slow the wings by increasing the frame duration. It's to add more frames I added like three more frames to the wing's 6-frame animation and now I think it will go at a much more appropriate speed. I think this flap speed I have shown here is appropriate for times that our pegasi are moving though.

If archers were to ever make sense, I would say it would only make sense with pegasi.

Made for a game project that I got myself into, but the hair will likely be changed to something more appropriate for a protagonist. It will be tactical RPG of sorts.

Since you're probably gonna look at animations like these all the time if you play the game... is there anything people feel like nitpicking over?

  4. I swear there's a way to whip up a pony sprite maker.

People who are making pony kart made one simply because of that need to create some and fast.

The closest thing you have to a pony sprite maker is the numerous pixel artists who make edits to desktop ponies. Besides, isn't ponykart a 3-d game, or am I confusing that with a different project?

    I don't,Its a transparent background actually

(stupid brain farts. I'm getting a lot of them lately.)

If you want more practice so you can start getting faster, here's another you can do:

  5. I would advise against drawing your sprites on a white background as your colors will likely look very different if you were to place your characters in a dark setting. I hear that drawing them on a gray background is best for making sure your characters look best on any background, but if a character is going to appear in a very specific colored background, it's best to draw their colors on that background to make sure their colors look right.

    Just a thought.

  6. Sorry about the server being down due to some glitches found in the system and updating it. The server is back up. ;)

Okay, another update will be coming soon, with more spells and store items. Man, this was getting a lot of attention and then it stops.

I need testers here. No one else wants to play? :(

You might attract more people if more time was invested on its graphics, so you can have something more presentable to people so more people become interested in the project.

Believe me, I have first hand experience with the sort of silly stuff that happens if you have great graphics for excellent presentation. I know I get picky over graphics when I'm looking for a game to play as it suggests that care was put into it.

  7. Just wanted to share an example of things you can do with a mouse...

    http://jayetang.com/...play/oldman.htm

If you zoom into the end result, you'll find that his work is actually very, very sloppy if you try to blow it up in size.

Going with Bohtty's critique of that other mouse drawing, I think we can say very similar things about this piece. Not a bad artist, but I don't think this is what we're looking for.

  8. We have improved the sprites a bit more, but before releasing our next alpha version we are going to make the sprites look a bit better(looking like art style from the show).

    Pixels. Show accuracy. Pick one.

You cannot stick with show accuracy with pixel art without second thought. When you're working small scale, you cannot just take the show's outline color and expect that it works well on sprite work. When you're working small, you have to have good contrast to make things visible.

    Posted Image

^Here' something I made for smaller-scale stuff. Note how there is no room to fit in a mouth*** or nostril because pixels start becoming HUGE at this scale. One pixel is essentially a quarter width of an eye, and you can have no smaller. Proportions are heavily dependent on the scale you're working on (e.g. try drawing a 8x8 chess board on a 10x10 image, heheh). You're going to have to stylize ponies if you want smaller-scaled sprites. As you can see, my direction with my own pony sprites made them resemble the toys more than the show.

See how I disregarded show-accuracy by using an outline color to be used for every NPC? Using show-accurate outline colors will create a very weak contrast.

Yet, if you're working larger scale, you're much better off getting a vector artist if you want show-accuracy. Having to manually antialias everything is highly annoying when a vector artist can probably create the same image much faster without worrying about the fine details to create a smooth image. Here's something I made at a much larger scale:

As you can imagine, if I wanna make the most out of pixel art, I'm gonna have to start inventing details that don't really exist, which isn't very true to the simplistic cartoon-styled art of the show.

  9. i see you a lot on these forums and you are always so well... grumpy why is that i mean no offence but come on man lighten up a bit, you really bash on people a lot

I dunno about bashing people. Sometimes, it's just weird seeing people give so much praise for something that is far from perfect, and sometimes, I just had to feel compelled to say something. In this case, we're dealing with a massive, massive project. Wouldn't it be in the project's leader's interest to be aware of the sort of stuff you have to go through to finish it off? I'm pretty sure you don't wanna spend a year on a project just to see it fall apart later on.

  10. We are happy to accept artists to help with the project. ;)

There's already another game project I'm getting tangled up on. You're gonna need a ton of luck finding somebody talented to create something really awesome.

Better yet, you're gonna need a TON of dedication for this project if you're gonna create a massive MMO that includes the outer reaches of Equestria. Think about how large your team is. Look at the size of indie games that are produced with a team that size. You're not gonna find too many MMO's done with a team of just a handful, let alone any MMO's done with a budget low enough to be called indie.

I also recently resigned from another MMO project due to extremely mediocre planning and organization which has caused another spriter to create an enormous sprite sheet for a background pony which already had a sprite sheet done. Unless you have an idea of how to correctly organize a game project and know why other game projects out there have failed and never been released, I wouldn't expect this MMO project to get too far.

  11. That MMO project needs more artistically-inclined people. :(

Earth tones in the GUI, yet saturated blues and greens in the background. Free resources were used for tile work, and they don't quite fit in with the pony sprites you have, let alone make sense to create the world of Equestria.

  12. The right eye isn't the problem. The eye to our left is; it's not quite long enough. I think an easy way to see how you did is to place a transparent layer over your work so you can directly compare proportions.

  13. They might be first attempts, but chances are the artist is a lot more experienced with art than what the thread title suggested. If you are good with referencing, there's probably no way you can horribly mess up with drawing cartoon characters since they're really easy to draw.

  14. This thread makes me sad... seeing people here bash on people for seeing people who are different in a negative light, because they have a mindset different from their own.

    The hypocrisy here is ridiculous.

    • Brohoof 1
  15. Yea it is very basic :) but also my first ever attempt at this :3 i'm looking to moving on to bigger and better projects in the near future XD what would you suggest other than minecraft?

By the way thank you very much for your feed back :D

Lots of programs can be used for pixel art. MS Paint, Graphicsgale, Grafx2... anything that has a pencil tool or equivalent and a zoom of at least 400% can be used for pixel art. I would probably suggest poking around for a bit to see what sort of software out there seems usable for you.

  16. EDIT: Oh hey, fixed link.

I'm a person who's pretty hard to impress, but I don't really see pixel art like this to be much to brag about =/

I also still don't completely understand why people tend to use minecraft as a medium for pixel art. What am I overlooking?

  17. Why do threads like these exist? :(

Ponies. Men. How can people not see the connection? Unless you're living under a rock, you should know very well that if you don't see many people do this, it's probably because it's against the norm. When was the last time you see a little boy play with colorful pony toys?

  18. I think the only reason why I ever got hooked was when I started to appreciate and analyze writing after amazing myself with the crazy amount of stuff in tvtropes (as well as the amount of pony on that site too). I paid more attention to characterizations and wanted to know the characters themselves just for the sake of knowing them. Then, it kinda grew in on me.

I don't remember what I exactly thought of the first episode, but if you ask me today, I would say it's totally cheesy.

  19. Yep. I've been spriting some stuff for a fan game in the works, and I would like to hold a contest to give people an opportunity to have their OC's appear in the game when an alpha version comes out.

You just need to do your best to make something similar to this, or maybe even better:

    Posted Image

If nobody can do it, I'll take what I consider the best, touch it up, and have the rest of the team insert your OC somewhere.

If you don't win, consider this a learning experience. ;)

  20. Oh wow. The video lacks so much polish that it's practically comedy, yet it has a number of stories that are strangely familiar (esp the part about the women being split apart by two camels). The makers of this movie has probably done their research.
