  2. (SPOILERS FOR MAGICAL MYSTERY CURE)Twilight is best Princess- A Character Study

From the very start of the show, Twilight has always stood out to me. It's not because she's the main focus of the show, or even her mental and psychical development. Twilight stood out to me because she was a nerd. Now, this really mattered to me, not only because I could easily identify with her, but also because I barely ever see a nerd being the main character of a show, unless the show's main goal was to educate or all of the character were supposed to have the nerd archetype. Usually, I saw the "nerd" character as a supporting lead, so seeing Twilight be a book nerd and a strong leader really stood out to me.

Now, let's move on to what I really want to address in this character study, why Twilight is best Princess. Now don't get me wrong, I love all the Princesses to an extent, but Twilight is the best one in my eyes, and here are three reasons why.

1.) A big chunk of Twilight's character is her friends. Celly and Luna support each other, sure. Cadance and Shining Armor appear together a lot, also true. But Twilight's reason of becoming an alicorn was because she needed to help her friends, and through that devotion and care for her five besties, it makes every triumph Twilight succeeds in even more well earned. It is an understatement to say Twilight would be nowhere without her friends. Equestria would be nowhere without Twilight and her friends. (As seen in the season 5 finale).

2.) Twilight's care can get the best of her. Now let's move on to one of Twilight's greatest strength  and flaw, her care for her friends. On the one side, Twilight's care just shows how much she'll do for her friends, and to what lengths she'll go. On the other, Twilight's need to protect her friends allows her to be subject to one of the flaws of Applejack, she doesn't accept help. This trait was very evident in Twilight for a while, until is was finally addressed directly in the Season 8 finale. Even though this is a flaw, it just goes to show how much she loves her friends.

3.) Twilight's extremely relatable. This reason kind of mixes two reasons to love Twilight: her adorableness and relatability. First off, Twilight is adorable. From her wide range of expressions that could easily match Pinkie Pie to how she cracks under pressure, Twilight's reactions to certain events are just a joy to watch. Secondly, Twilight is just so relatable to me. Her geek outs are hilarious to watch and just fill her with so much character. She easily avoids your typical Mary Sue protagonist.

And that's my character study on Twilight! Next will be Apple Horse!

@Lucky Bolt Well, not really now that I look at it, but somewhat.

  3. My review of The Journal of the Two Sisters (spoiler free)

I just got done reading The Journal of the Sisters by Amy Keating Rogers and would like to give it a quick review. Overall, the book was quite entertaining. A lot of world building was revealed, but if you were picking up this book to journey into Luna's mind of jealousy for her sister, you would not find it here. Even so, I really enjoyed this book. It was a pretty fast read (as most MLP books are), but even with the read being fast, it still explored so much about the two princesses and the world of Equestria. Now for a list of likes and dislikes!

What I liked about the book

    • A lot of world building explored
    • Different sides of Luna and Celestia revealed (Celesia being a bookworm and Luna being a prankster)
    • The writing style of Amy Keating Rogers suits the book well and benefits it
    • A fun, quick read

What I disliked about the book

    • Although the fun, light hearted tone overall benefited the book, I wish some of the darker area's of Luna's mind were explored
    • Some confusion with Celly and Moonbutt being alicorns, as in the show it was treated like they didn't know about the birth of an alicorn.

Overall, I'd recommend the book, and if you don't want to buy it, a YouTube channel called Midnight Solace has an audio read of it.

  4. Why I love Rainbow Dash

Listen, I know a lot of bronies, pegasisters, and other fans of MLP who only like Rainbow Dash because "she's awesome". For me, it's the exact opposite.

I love Rainbow not because she's cool, but because out of all of the Mane 6, she arguably has the most flaws.

Whether it be her impulsive nature, attitude, bad habits, possible ADHD, or insensitive behavior, Rainbow is rife with flaws, but that's what makes her so great.

Sure, you might get annoyed at Rainbow's overblown ego or sarcastic commentary, but I'd argue that she's had the most character development out of the Mane 6.

Now, here's where some people say, "No, that's not true! What about Twilight?"

While you can believe that Twilight has had the most development, let's take a look at things in perspective.

It wasn't until the SEASON 8 FINALE when Twilight showed that she had learned to accept help from her friends. Meanwhile, Rainbow Dash has cooled off one of her biggest flaws, her ego, so that she still has her edges, but acknowledges others' contributions and pushes them forward. (As shown in "Sleepless in Ponyville" for complimenting Scoots, "Wonderbolts Academy" for accepting her position as a wingpony and admiring Lightning Dust's talents, as well as numerous others.)

Now, let's look at a flaw that Rainbow is still struggling with. Her constant need for speed.

Rainbow has shown time and time again her skills as a pegasus, being a fast flier who loves to dazzle.  Yet sometimes her speedy efforts show much annoyance from her fellow pony peers. (As shown in The Movie, when she messes up Rarity's efforts of decorating, "The Non-Compete Clause" in which she and Applejack have yet another dispute, and many others).  I think this trait goes hand in hand with Rainbow wanting to do things her way, not really thinking about the reaction of others. Rainbow, on the surface, may be brash, rude, and egotistical, but deep down is where her heart of gold truly shows. Think about the times Rainbow has pushed others to new heights they never thought they could reach. (As seen in "Hurricane Fluttershy", which is pretty self explanatory if you've seen the episode, and "Flight to the Finish", where she encourages Scoot's despite her limitations). In episodes where Rainbow pushes others to be their best, those episodes are some of my favorites. In fact, I enjoy Rainbow tons more as a secondary character then anything else, really.

Overall, Rainbow Dash is a terrific character in my eyes. She is spotted with flaws, but she works to undermine them and come out on top as a superior pony. I think why Rainbow Dash is the Element of Loyalty, simply put, is because she pushes others harder then herself. When she's the only one? Her ego will get overblown and reach some extreme levels. But when she has others to support? Rainbow is the most loyal, supportive, and encouraging friend there could be.

I hope you enjoyed this character analysis! I'll be doing more soon!

    1. Lucky Bolt

      Lucky Bolt

This was very well written, and so true! I love it! And I love Dash, not just because she's awesome, but yeah, also because of her flaws. And she's always there for her friends, always supporting them and pushing them to new heights. That's true loyalty right there.

    2. imawesome

      imawesome

@Lucky Bolt Thank you! I really like doing deep character analyses and I'm glad to see you agree. :)

And in my personal opinion, if there's anything to love about MLP, it's the characters!

  5. Why Rarity is awesome

Ah, Rarity. The pony who loves fashion, drama, and business. These may seem like odd priorities for the Element of Generosity, but that's what I love about her. She balances the traits that must be played out as the Element of Generosity, but, like practically all of the Mane 6, she springs to life with her own traits not defined by her Element. Now, you may be asking how that makes Rarity great, as I previously stated most of the Mane 6 have traits outside their own Element. And that's just the thing.

Rarity's own personal accomplishments, goals, and basically everything outside of her generous spirit would lead you in the complete opposite direction of what her Element would be. Funny enough, Rarity's original Element was gong to be inspiration, but it was changed to generosity. Looking at Rarity's other traits, I can easily see why Faust was going to chose that Element for her. Rarity's creativity, dramatic nature, and large amount of costumers that are inspired by her all play in to inspiration being the go to Element.

Now let's go back to what makes Rarity great. Just like Rainbow Dash, Rarity initially did not have a friendly exterior. She came off as snooty, privileged, and hoity - toity, as seen in Sweet and Elite, Sisterhooves Social, Sonic Rainboom, Look Before You Sleep, and others. However, let's look at Rarity now.

As seen in Campfire Tales, she brings a considerably lesser amount of belongings than as seen in Sleepless in Ponyville. She proves time and time again just what her Element means, as shown recently in Best Gift Ever!. Not only that, but Rarity spits on your typical "damsel in distress" or "girly girl" trope so wonderfully. I know this has been mentioned a lot as an excellent reason to love Rarity, but let me just rephrase. Rarity has proven time and time again that while she indulges in girly habits and might need saving a little more than the rest of the Mane 6, she is still a strong, feminist icon that is perfect for little girls to look up to. Take "A Canterlot Wedding" when she puts up a good fight against the changelings, the premiere where she fights the manticore, and most notably, the entirety of "A Dog and Pony Show". These episodes all show how Rarity is a great character for girls to look up to.

Sure, Rarity is girly, I'm not denying that. But what she isn't is materialistic, air-headed, or vindictive or cruel, which are all common traits of "girly girls" in some cartoons. Rarity destroys this trope, and that's why I love her.

Well, that concludes my second character study. Sorry if I'm repeating a lot of what's already been said, I guess I'm just trying to enforce it.

Next I'll be doing Twilight Sparkle.

  9. I have a new favorite show!

MLP: FiM used to be my favorite show, and even though I've often gone back and forth on what my favorite TV show is a lot, I now have decided what my new favorite show is, and am pretty certain this won't change anytime soon. However, to make this more fun, I want to give you all a couple of possibilities of to what my new favorite show is. Note that I love all the following shows.

    • Steven Universe
    • RWBY
    • Gravity Falls
    • The Office
    • Sailor Moon
    • Miraculous Ladybug
    • The Powerpuff Girls

Have fun guessing and have a great day!

(BONUS if you can guess my favorite character from show, all on first try).

  11. I'm SOO SOO SOO SOO SOO excited for S9 now! If you've missed it, there's a new S9 trailer that Discovery Family's Twitter posted. If you don't want spoilers, shield your eyes!

    Spoiler

Sombra's back BABY!! Now, this kind of ruins the whole "comics being canon" thing that I believed, but I'll squeeze in a head canon to make it work. :mlp_proud:I'm just SO excited! I'm the kind of person who always jumps on the hype train and grabs as many spoilers as possible, IDKW but I guess I was just made like that. I truly wish I had the energy to dissect this frame by frame, but sadly I do not. Let's just hope S9 is as good as the staff is making it out to be!

    Spoiler

Here's the trailer for anyone curious:

Now there’s four major villains to face in season 9  . Sombra, Chrysalis, I guess you can kind of count Tirek and Cozy Glow together. Where are her parents  ? Normally I don’t really care about every character’s parents, but well, she’s a filly  .

    3. imawesome

      imawesome

@WWolf Or they'll just pull a "Season 7 teaser" on us and have

      Spoiler

Sombra not actually be Sombra and just be an allusion created by Chrissy or something.

I mean, she made copies of the Mane 6, why not Sombra? And they'd have to know each other, both being threatning villains and all.

      Yeah, maybe they'll address that...?

    4. DubWolf

      DubWolf

Hmm I hope they don't do that :please: .

Maybe Cozy Glow isn't actually a filly and it's just some sort of alternative form  ....  nah :P , I think that would've been revealed by then.

  12. In case some of you didn't notice, I posted a status update a while back basically saying RD was no longer my "best pony".

    Well, guess what?

That was to lead up to this, a anticlimactic April fools joke. (Translation: RD is still best pone.)

To make up for it, I will finally do my AJ character review. And, no, this is not a prank

Applejack: An Underrated Gem or a Celebrated Hero?

Even with me not being a early dedicated FiM fan, I caught on early on that AJ wasn't exactly known as "best pony", and that title was usually given to RD, Flutters, or party horse.

Even so, the way I see it now, AJ's rep has sharply increased.

No longer is she the butt joke background pony, but a hero who has won the fan's hearts.

    Don't believe me?

Let's take a few popular bronies/pegasisters in the FiM community: Applegeek, Lily Peet, SilverQuill, Equestron, Sweetie Bloom, etc. Regardless of what you think of these fans, they're all fairly popular, and they all appreciate Applejack.

But... what do think of Applejack?

In my opinion, the only two ponies that could probably pull off all five Elements (not including Magic) would be Pinkie Pie and Applejack. Both of them show a wide range of abilities, emotional and physical. I strongly believe that with their archetypes they could pull off those five Elements.

I'm not going to get sidetracked with theories, though. My point is, Applejack can be a lot of things.

She can be funny, bringing out the best of her family and others. (i.e. Sisterhooves Social, where it is directly stated of how good a sister she is to Apple Bloom). She can be loyal. (i.e. The Cutie Mark Chronicles, where she leaves Manehatten to go back to her family. Also, direct quote: Why of all the... This is your sister Applejack, remember? The loyalest of friends and the most dependable of ponies? - Applebuck Season). You see where this is going.

In the beginning, there was a lot of "meh" about Applejack. Now? I don't think so, and I can clearly see why.

Applejack is stubborn, competitive, overprotective, blunt, nurturing, hard working... all traits we didn't see a lot of in the early seasons.

In Seasons 1-3, I'd say, we only saw glimpses of these traits. Sure, they'd be one of the focuses of an AJ - centric episode, but we never really saw them develop in the background, which is much of what made Pinkie Pinkie, Rarity Rarity, Twilight Twilight, and so on. What did AJ do (mainly) in seasons 1 to 3? Apples. And... understandably, that didn't really make her a fave of the fans.

All that changed as MLP progressed, though. (Yes, I prefer modern MLP to early MLP. Fiighht me!) AJ got background development, and suddenly she got a popularity boost. Now, I'm not going to sit here and say AJ's currently as popular as RD or Flutters or even Pinkie Pie ever were, but it is remarkable to see such an admittedly boring character transform into my 2nd fave.

In conclusion? Applejack really is best background pony.

I liked this review! :D While Applejack might not be one of my favorite Mane 6 ponies (though I love them all), I think she's a very likable character. I may not find her as entertaining as Rarity or as adorable as Fluttershy, but somehow I feel she'd be the best friend out of all the Mane 6. :mlp_yeehaa:

      Tacodidra

Definitely! :) It's weird, since I'm usually quite critical of things, but MLP is the one exception to that. :mlp_yay: I find positive things about every episode, even if some of them are not quite as good as the others.

  14. Sooooooo.... I've got some interesting news to say the least.

Ever since the announcement that FiM's Season 9 will be the last, I've begun to rewatch the episodes from Season 1. While I was watching, I picked up on some tidbits I didn't notice before or just forgot about. Through those tidbits, I'm pretty sure I developed a new "best pony".

    Or two, really.

As I did with the "guess my new favorite show" status update, I've proposed a guessing game to see who can guess my new two "best ponies" before I edit my profile. You can look back at my "character reviews" status updates for clues about what I think about the characters, but since I haven't done a status update for Pinkie, AJ, Starlight, or Flutters yet I'll also give my previous rankings of the Mane 7. (I'm including Starlight because she's practically in the gang.)

    1.) Rainbow Dash.

    2.) Rarity.

    3.) Pinkie Pie.

    4.) Applejack.

    5.) Twilight Sparkle.

    6.) Starlight Glimmer.

    7.) Fluttershy.

Guess away and enjoy your weekend!

I'll rewatch the entire series after it ends. I've enjoyed most of the episodes I've seen twice (though there aren't many of those) more the second time, so I'm sure it will be awesome! B)

My favorites back in season 1 were Twilight (my original best pony) and Pinkie (took over from episode 3 onwards). Nowadays, Rarity is my favorite, and I'd say Rainbow Dash is the character who has improved the most. :)

  15. Well, this status update might take a while.

Firstly, I come back with a whopping 114 NOTIFICATIONS. This may not seem like a lot to you guys, but maybe it's a bad thing I haven't checked my inbox for a while.

Second, I have found my latest obsession: DDLC. Seriously, go check it out if you haven't. On the subject of that, though, I have recently lost my Windows computer (which is why I've been gone), and therefore am struggling to find a way to download DDLC without going through the trouble of creating a Google account because I'm using my only other option: Chrome. First world problems, am I right?

Enough about me, though. How has MLP and Forums been? Through all the havoc of this week (and the previous), I haven't touched MLP in a while, and I honestly don't feel like digging  through other countless EQD posts just to find the ones relevant to S9 and G5. A quick update would be nice :)

Thank you all and have a great spring break!

I mean, if both really happened to a person... *shudders*

@Stormfurry Oh, I see. You post WTF content all the time in your status updates... I can see why the bleach would be running low.

  23. Call me weird, call me crazy. But I think this is my new favorite song.

So, I dug up some comments I posted as a guest on TheTopTens, and honestly, I eel like face palming with every word I wrote. Here's my sample opinion I wrot for the episode "A Flurry of Emotions":

A Flurry of Emotions wasn't at all an episode I had extremely high hopes for,I just thought it would be all around fun. Unfortunately, this episode includes a weak beginning, and an awful script. However,Flurry Heart steals the episode with her adorableness, and mirror example of a kid. What I'm noticing is that MLP:FIM is making more two story episodes, with one being the major focus and one being the minor. This episode does that quite well, and I loved an MLP character who liked art.A LOT. Good moral as well. A mix of bitting off more than you can chew which is WAY overdone in my little pony, but includes some try to make time with others. I also find quite remarkable that so many side characters where thrown into this episode for good purposes. A step up!

Out of all the things I could leave as my mark on the Internet, too... :eww:

Reading my old posts makes me cringe too! :please: I don't think your review is that bad, though! :)

@Tacodidra It's really just the grammar and spelling mistakes that make me cringe. Also the fact that the post was from only 2 years ago.

  25. Damn it, I want to watch MLP so bad what with the spoiler I just got. Must resist... ponies...
