  1. I think the schools do realize this. It is the parents that convince the school to make these decisions that don't.
  2. That, my good sir, is absolutely excellent. I laughed for quite a while when I saw this one But that, I think is a problem. Unfortunately, you are right, but it is absurd that some parents react the way they do if their kid gets a bruise or a scratch. I remember back in the day, if I ever got hurt, my parents were always pretty nice about it, but they always blamed me for it, not the playground that I played on. "You should be more careful." was their usual reply. There is a flaw in the legal system if people can harm their child's development through such an act. It is understandable if the playground is actually dangerous because it is falling apart, but more responsibility should be assumed on the part of the child for doing something risky and dangerous.
  3. Summoned again! How may I be of service on this fine night?
  4. What just happened? Why have I been brought to this strange location??? o.O
  5. Errors errors errors.... Why do I always feel like all programming is is fixing errors? :(

I started learning Javascript this summer (already know some HTML/CSS), and yes. ;D Good luck fixing your stuff!

@Neikos the Omniscient, I tell you, embedded programming is all about working with individual bits... The thing that is REALLY annoying about it is if you mistake one "1" or "0" somewhere, the whole system can malfunction (and if you are unlucky, break)... :/

@Cakesplat, sounds cool! Have fun! Also, thanks :P I need that luck.

OOOHHH, ok, it must be a race condition!!! That would explain it.

  6. Interesting you say that. It is a good point that the kids will usually find ways to have fun, but the lack of heights in the new playgrounds is pretty disappointing. The vertical elevation give kids a need to conquer their fears, and gain a sense of accomplishment. Besides, I think you really do need to break a few bones growing up in order to learn. I remember when I was young I spent a lot of time in the woods with my friends. There was this rope swing that was a ton of fun, and one of them broke his arm on it, but as soon as his arm was fixed, he was back to swinging on the rope. I think it is the sense of speed, heights, and exhilaration that is lacking with today's playgrounds that can actually take away from the emotions that kids experience on them.
  7. ...................... WHAT? That is absurd. Recess is the most important part of elementary school. It is where one learns how to think creatively, and how to interact socially in an uncontrolled or loosely controlled environment. Absolutely critical I'd think.
  8. Today, I passed by the elementary school I had attended many years ago. The aging school had been long torn down and replaced with a new, modern school, which I feel doesn't look much like an elementary school anymore, but would be better acquainted as a company of sort. The new building also blocks off the excellent sledding hill that accompanied my youth. Regardless, the most shocking part was the state of the playground. The massive wooden playground which I had grown up with and loved, was replaced by a small measly metal setup. Now, I've heard things have changed quite a bit since I was still a young child, for instance kids are not allowed to run on the playground because it is "dangerous" and that tag is a forbidden game due to the injuries that may ensue. These new rules seem highly restrictive and I would imagine hinder a child's growth in creativity and imagination. But again, the new playground just doesn't seem the same as what I grew up with, to be frank, it looks boring. I've also heard that they chopped off the tire swing because the school was worried that it would cause the students to "get dizzy"... Wasn't that the point of a tire swing...? What do all of you think on the matter?
  9. Is J++ a .NET implementation of Java? That seems bizarre indeed especially considering C#/.NET was created in order to directly compete with Java.... I'm really surprised, you make it sound like you haven't heard of Vim..... Am I really getting that old?
  10. Lol I know A LOT of developers who work in a professional environment with Visual Studio. Albeit, I personally don't use Notepad++ OR VS because I'm under Linux and I prefer to do everything the old fashioned way (Vim!! )
  11. Features-wise, it is pretty easy to beat. The overall slickness and the experience though? Notepad++ definitely does a good job with those. +1 for KDE. Isn't Notepad++ Windows only? Are you running it through Wine? As for gVim... I think I'll just stick with cli Vim then I have a friend who swears by TextWrangler. It seems pretty slick and nice. I'll admit I don't like Nano very much... It has a severe shortage of features :/ But admittedly, Vim has a very very steep learning curve, and it is hard to pick up, so I understand that a lot of ponies prefer Nano. Good luck!! I'm surprised at how many Notepad++ users there are. Also, I'm surprised at the lack of Emacs... I would have imagined someone would have come about and told me that Emacs is better than Vim by now
  12. Check out SublimeText2. I know it costs $50, but the evaluation version doesn't have a time limit. It is pretty cool. I am considering possibly switching to it. Another good one to look at is Geany.
  13. Ah, right, Notepad++ is a great choice for the Windows platform. I've been working entirely in a Linux platform for years (when I need to do Windows work, I write the code in Linux and test it in a VM). I agree, often times the full-blown IDEs just get in the way, especially if you are working on something quick and simple. It's interesting that you mentioned gVim. I actually use straight console driven Vim. Is there any advantages in using gVim?
  14. So, I am pretty curious as to what text editors everypony uses. I personally use Vim (A LOT of Vim), Eclipse, Aptana Studio, Netbeans, or Geany depending on what it is that I am working on. I've recently been trying out SublimeText 2 a bit, and I like it a fair amount, but I'm not sure if it is worth switching to considering how much I like Vim. I know this will probably create a flame war, but the only beverages I've had today have been alcoholic so I am not in the right mind to make smart decisions http://mlpforums.com/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/wink.png EDIT: I've been using Emacs with EVIL mode since a couple weeks after I posted this. I get the editing speed of Vim and the power of Emacs, so it's been awesome.
  15. This is absolutely terrible.... Parents should not be letting their 8 year old kids roam free on the internet in this manner. The internet is not a child-safe environment by any means, and the fact that a parent would go this far because of a few joking words said on forums is absolutely sickening. I think it's about as ridiculous as if a parent were to sue a town for the kid falling while running on a field. This sort of thing should not be happening.
  16. These particular sketches are actually digital. I like the convenience of drawing on the computer though I feel a need to make sure it feels as close to pencil and paper as possible. When drawing on actual paper though, I always make sure to do so in my drawing book. (I do a lot more sketching digitally than on paper because it's cheaper )
  17. Hmm... Can you not see the face (clearly or at all) on your monitor? I have a very bright monitor so no one seemed to have trouble while looking at it with mine, but perhaps that's something I should think about...
  18. What you said about the drawings never being good enough. That's really true I suppose it was a silly thing for me to say I guess I'll have to give a dragon painting a shot. Thanks for the kind words
  19. Thanks Haha, thank you This was I think maybe the 2nd or 3rd dragon I've ever drawn, and of course, that includes doodles like this one. I did another quick doodle today: http://mlpforums.com/topic/27070-another-dragon-doodle/ and I think I don't really want to start painting them until I feel like my doodles are good enough
  20. Hey everypony!! I did another super quick dragon sketch today. I try to take a little break from work everyday to draw a little something like this Please, tell me what you think! I love to hear what everypony has to say because feedback is one of the things that helps me improve most!
  21. Thanks It's quick and easy because it's not an already existing character. Even if I make a mistake, I can dismiss it as a part of "my design" Thank you
  22. Another super quick sketch I did. I like drawing very simple things with minimal detail, really quickly, as I think it's a good exercise. Tell me what you think!
  23. Thanks It is digital. As for other pictures... Not really. Most of the time, I draw something and then immediately delete it, or I just haven't bothered to upload it. Lately, I've been trying to preserve my sketches though: http://randomsketchman.tumblr.com if you're interested. The idea for most of these was to spend less than 5 minutes on the drawings, and to capture the feel of the subjects rather than being technically accurate. Thanks, perhaps I'll start posting more Thank you for the kind words. Hey, thanks for the crit! I agree, I definitely smudged it a little too much there. The lighting in the actual iris (and especially the pupil) is pretty off too. The overall composition of the picture is absolutely terrible, because the eye is offset in a really awkward way. As for the horn comment, I'll admit, that was outside of my viewport, so I completely forgot to do something more with that part That's definitely a mistake. Or do you mean right above the eye? As that was intentional, but now that I look at it, I think I overdid it. As I mentioned above, it's digital.
  24. Hi there! This is just a super quick doodle. I know there are a lot of problems with it, and it's not very detailed, but again, doodle. Regardless, tell me what you think, and feel free to crit, I'd be interested in hearing.
