  1. Fwiw, if you dig through Media Discussion, you can find plenty of "unpopular opinions" threads.

This is just from the past month alone, and I'm sure you could find others if you were to dig further back or look in other sections.

The goal of removing the Unpopular Opinions thread wasn't to encourage circlejerkery (in fact, if you look at the old Unpopular Opinions thread, it was often a circlejerk in its own right imo). We do have a Debate Pit, after all. Part of the idea of taking down the general UO thread was to hopefully get people to make more topics like the ones linked above, rather than just dumping posts into a large thread encompassing every possible opinion on any subject. That way we can get more specific discussion, which is something the staff does want to encourage.

I was on staff when the thread was taken down (and argued against it being closed, in fact). The issue was never "We do not want people to express the opinions they'd use an Unpopular Opinions thread to express", and it being closed had everything to do with the reasons Spoon listed off here. People using the topic as an excuse to start shit, the extreme broadness of the topic not leading to much discussion, all that jazz.

    --------

Can't comment on anything that's happened recently since I'm severely out of touch with anything that's happened in the past several months, but I thought I'd talk more about that "Unpopular Opinions" thing since it was mentioned as a concern.

  2. If possible, it'd be cool to have the old Rarity : D and Applejack : ph34r : emotes back. They don't need to replace the newer ones or be coded to those phrases, but they were some of my favorite emotes and I miss em'.

Mod/admin peeps, any word on these? Anybody know if they're still lying around somewhere, or if they've been lost?

  3. Super relevant question after that last bomb guys

Could the Crystal Gems beat everybody's favorite family of PNW vampires at baseball?

Now, on the one hand, the vampires seem to have a lot going for them. Edward can read minds, they're at least as strong and as fast as the gems, and they don't have Steven, Lapis or Saph to weigh them down. On the other hand, Alice seems to be TERRIBLE at pitching, and Amethyst would eat her for lunch. Overall, it seems to be a bit of a toss up.

Either way, I hope somebody makes a montage of the gem baseball game with Muse playing in the background.

  4. Probably Lion King. Both movies have good songs, good villains (shoot me, I liked Hans) and tell great stories, but everything works together much more cohesively in the Lion King. The characters, music, visuals, setting, all of it gels just so nicely. I don't think Frozen's as bad as a lot of people say it is, but certain things (the setting, some of the music, Elsa in the second half of the movie) felt misused or underused. That's enough to put LK over the top.

I will say that I vastly prefer Frozen's characters.

  5. Been using this for the past few months. It's some concept art for the movie Big Hero 6. Just looking at it, it seems as though something isn't right, but I find the nighttime and the neon colors to be oddly soothing even so.

  6. I waited nearly four years for this episode and didn't enjoy a second of it. Perhaps I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up and expected an episode more along the lines of Magical Mystery Cure or Crusaders of the Lost Mark, two other episodes where characters took big steps forward in their lives. However, I don't think it's at all unreasonable to expect the writers to not turn Dash into this dude

cause this nonsense was depressing enough when it was happening to somebody I wasn't particularly attached to  . Having to sit through 22 minutes of "DUDE LOOK AT HER CHILDHOOD DREAM CRUMBLE AROUND HER LMAO     SHE ACTUALLY THOUGHT SHE'D ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING    " more or less successfully depleted my desire to continue watching the show.

  7. I only quoted you as just an example out of many, nearly all of the fandom believes fans cannot write anything that would feel like an episode or even one of the children's novels.

I didn't say that I believed that. I do believe the proportion who could do it is probably relatively small compared to the number who thinks they're capable of it.

Like seriously? Are you willing to tell me that there are well-regarded writers on FIMfiction that can't understand the characters or the world they live in, or cannot write them with the proper tone and keep it appropriate?

Depends on how we define "well-regarded". Since relatively few fanfics are written in the show's style (self-contained slice of life stories), most well-regarded people on Fimfic have become popular by writing stories that one wouldn't normally see in the show. Because of this, I don't think it's unfair to say that their styles wouldn't necessarily transition seamlessly to writing episodes.

  8.

Right now I'm still believing everyone here is joking when you all tell me that probably 85%+ fanfic writers would submit grimdark, memefilled, or sexual stories for an episode if given the chance.

Tis an exaggeration, to be sure, though I'm sure some would do it just to troll and harass the poor folks tasked with reading the scripts.

I didn't claim that 85+% people would submit things of that nature, though. I just said that I've encountered very few fan writers who I'd expect to write a quality FiM episode.

  9. I've read fanfics that would make for terrific episode concepts, and some fan authors certainly do have a better grasp of show characters than some show writers. However, finding those is a matter of fishing needles out of a big big haystack. Wouldn't be opposed to seeing episodes written by a few specific people, but I'd assume that the whole process would be more trouble than it's worth for those running the show.

  10. Working on a farm and being in what is essentially the Equestrian Air Force are (pardon the pun) two horses of different colors. And with Twilight, spending time with her friends and making new ones IS part of her job.

While they are something of a military organization, the Wonderbolts have been more analogous to a professional sports team since their introduction. Sure, it's a time commitment. But professional athletes (and people in the air force, for that matter) have personal lives just like everybody else does. Until Spitfire or somebody says "Hey you have to live in Cloudsdale and you can't leave unless I say so" there's no reason to assume that would be the case. We can just assume Dash will be Wonderbolting offscreen whenever she used to do weather team things offscreen.

  11.

And a really bucking good excuse for how she'll be able to stay with her friends.

It's really just a different job, and the Mane Six's jobs never interfere with the plot. Applejack probably does hours and hours of farmwork every day, and being a princess is presumably a big responsibility too, and these things never seem to matter. When you're as fast as Rainbow Dash, commute to Cloudsdale and back really isn't a big deal :P

  12. Rainbow Falls

    • Spitfire and Fleetfoot lie to their own teammate so they can do better in the games, hanging Soarin' out to dry
    • Nothing happens to them

    Rarity Investigates

    • Rainbow Dash is accused of doing more or less exactly what Spitfire did in RF
    • "Prove your own innocence or you're off the team forever"

It pretty much just ties back to Rainbow Falls.

  13.

I often protest how much Twilight exerts her power over others, but even she's never done something that bad.

Idk, I think Lesson Zero more than counts.

    ----------

The episode had some weak points (the ending part where Trixie attempts the stunt anyway can be interpreted as suicidal, stupid, or contrived, none of which are particularly good) and Twilight's behavior towards Trix seemed to come out of left field. That said, it made for a terrific episode, so I'm not in a hurry to linger on either thing too much. S'nice to see some tension between Star and Twily, and some hints of old Starlight's personality coming out. As somebody who wasn't a fan of Reformed!Starlight or Trixie before this episode, they both managed to win me over.

  14. Season 2 > Season 4 = Season 5 > Season 3 > Season 1 is my tentative ranking. Overall, ok/10. The fact that Season 5 scored so highly even though I frequently wasn't so keen on it is probably a sign of me losing interest in the show.

As for EQG, Friendship Games > Rainbow Rocks > Movie 1. In fact, I'd rate FG over RR by a pretty decent margin.

    IT'S ALL IN YOUR HANDS

    HOLD ON

    HOLD BACK THE DARKNESS

These books were the shit when I was a kid, and I'd love to go back and check them out again sometime to see how they held up. Some parts I remember were... not what you'd expect to see in a children's series ^_^.

As a side thingy, a few years ago I picked up some framed pictures of red-tailed hawks to put in my room because they reminded me of Tobias :)

  16. [1:24:22 AM] DashForever: Should we be concerned that she is a literal fascist
[1:24:37 AM] Rudes: no cause she's hot and has a sword
    [1:24:42 AM] DashForever: Fair point

  17. The teamwork thing isn't really an issue, and I'd argue that RD has been a terrific team player for a few seasons now. Dash's biggest problem currently is her tendency to put the Bolts up on a pedestal, even after they've repeatedly shown that they aren't quite worthy of all the adulation she tends to shower on them.

I'm sure she'll join them eventually. Shoulda happened seasons ago, frankly. It's the longest-running unresolved arc in the show.
