Prologue 

 

It was just another normal day for one of Ponyville's finest mailmares. Her rounds were nearly complete and her daughter was in school so she's have the rest of the afternoon to herself once she was done. Little did she know an unexpected drop-in of a particular blue box would be the start of an entirely new adventure for her.

The Doctor stumbled outside his TARDIS and sighed.

 

'Well...alright then...so somebody doesn't want to work...' He whispered as checked over the outside. 'No external damage, like usual...where is my-' he went to check his pockets before realizing something.

 

Why was he low to the ground?

 

He looked down and found...hooves. 'W..what?' He whispered, a smile coming across his face. 'What has happened to...where...' He began and turned around.

 

'I can't believe it. I've never been here before! Doesn't solve why I have hooves though...' He said looking towards the ground then back towards the sky and trees.

 

'I suppose I should try and find somebody from around here. They might be able to help me...'

Derpy Hooves was just finishing up her last rounds as one of Ponyville's finest mailmares. She was quite dedicated to her job, and strived to get mail and packages delivered on time no matter what. It was one of the few things she was good at and that nopony could poke fun at her about, because very few of them could ever say they could do better than she. Her cutie mark had nothing to do with delivery it was true; seven bubbles, and she had no memory of the circumstances that had led up to her gaining it, or when. 

 

She was just flying across a field toward Sweet Apple Acres to deliver some mail to Granny Smith. The orchard was on the outskirts of Ponyville not unlike Derpy's little cottage was. In fact, her home wasn't that far because her roommate Golden harvest, or Carrot Top as most ponies called her, had a small carrot farm that helped to bring in bits to pay for bills and the like since Derpy was a single mother and a mailmare's salary sadly didn't allow her to buy all the care her tiny unicorn filly Dinky needed. Dinky was born prematurely and had several medical problems as a result along with her diminutive stature. It was sometimes hard to imagine her having any problems however, what with how outgoing and energetic she was.

 

Anyway, Derpy was on her way when a strange blue box suddenly dropped out of nowhere. It startled the grey pegasus enough that she fell out of the sky as her wings clasped themselves tightly to her sides. Oh the reactions of a pegasus when they were scared... At any rate, she fell a couple of yards and skidded to a stop with her nose up against the back of the box. She heard talking from a distinctly male voice that sounded like it came from Trottingham; not a common accent in Ponyville except with Pipsqueak and his family, but this one seemed softer, less distinct somehow. Curious, the pegasus dusted herself off and straightened her mailmare's hat and bag before she flew over the box. She was immediately greeted by the sight of a very attractive earth stallion who looked to be quite lost. He mentioned something about going to find somebody around to help him out. Somebody? Derpy hadn't heard that word before.

 

So feeling obligated to show that ponies in Ponyville were helpful and friendly, she flew right in front of him, though was admittedly looking at him upside down. She had to hold onto her hat to keep it from falling off while her blonde mane, tail, and delivery bag all hung down from gravity.

 

"Hiya Mister! Are you lost? I've never seen you before!" she greeted brightly.

The Doctor looked over his hooves once more. This was extremely odd. He couldn't recall when he had been physically changed by traveling in the TARDIS. Though it was old and already had a broken chameleon unit...it could be breaking down even more. He shuddered at that thought. As he checked himself or and smiled he heard a voice from right next to him.

 

'Wha-!' He said as he jumped slightly. Checking the new...person...out he was interested. It seemed he wasn't the only horse around here. 'Um...who are you? And why are you a horse? Where am I? Why do I have hooves? And are those wings?' He said as he began to come up with new questions and started to move towards the 'visitor'. He stopped himself and smiled.

 

'Sorry. I can get carried away. Though I do want to know, where am I?'

Derpy blinked a couple of times, her left eye going off in its own direction as she turned right-side up. Her brow furrowed in concern for him, thinking he had a concussion or something. "Um, are you okay Mister? We're ponies, remember? You're an earth pony, I'ma pegasus. Why else would I have wings?"

 

She landed in front of the chestnut colored stallion, a few inches shorter than he as he apologized for getting carried away and calmly asked where he was. "You're...just outside of Ponyville of course, a short distance from Sweet Apple Acres."

The Doctor looked off into the distance for a moment. 'Ponies...huh. I guess that sounds...reasonable. But Pegasi?' He whispered before tuning back to the pony in front of him. 'Well, can you take me to Ponyville? I believe I am going to have to stay here for a little while...plus, I need to ask a few questions. Although one comes to mind immediately: who are you?' He asked

 

'As well, what is it like in Ponyville? Governments? Rulers? Food? And about y-' he stopped himself there. That would be rather rude to ask about the eyes he figured... 'Nevermind. I just need to get to Ponyville...Ms...?'

"Oh um..." she trailed off, not sure what to say in regard to all the questions. It was as bad as Dinky questioning her about things she didn't understand. One right after another; it was dizzying. It might be best to start with the inquiry of a name though.

 

"Um, Derpy Hooves. My name is Derpy Hooves, though sometimes other ponies call me Ditzy Doo. I don't think they mean it in a bad way though." She was oblivious to a lot of things though, mostly due to the fact she purposely blocked out insults toward her. "But, um, could you give me like ten minutes Mister? Ponyville's back that way," she gestured with one of her hooves toward the somewhat distant town, "I have one more delivery to make, but I can help you out as much as I can after." Celestia knows he needed it; poor guy probably had amnesia and couldn't remember anything about being a pony. He must've hit his head really hard.

 

She'd be right back though, because she took off as fast as she could to deliver the last of the mail in her bag for the day.

'Wait so I just-' The Doctor began as she flew off. He sighed and opened the door to the TARDIS. If he was going to stay for a while he might as well grab his stuff. He picked up his sonic screwdriver, his coat (not that it'd of be any use now) and checked one last time for anything he needed.

 

'I suppose that's it...now I wait.'

It wasn't right to leave a clueless pony alone to fend for themselves, she knew that, but it would be even more wrong if she was late delivering the post. She had a reputation of being one of the best mailmares in Ponyville after all, and needed to work twice as hard as anypony else in order to earn what bits she did. If she slipped up she could lose pay, or worse.

 

It actually took her closer to five minutes to get the delivery done because she was in such a rush to get back to the hapless stallion, and was actually leaving a soft blur of grey and light blue bubble shapes behind her. Pegasi were naturally fast anyway; Derpy would just never be breaking the sound barrier to make a sonic rainboom like Rainbow Dash.

 

She found the strange pony waiting outside his weird blue box. It hadn't been hard to track it back down; the thing stood out like a sore hoof anyway. Derpy stuffed her hat into the mail bag around her body as she landed. She could go home later to drop it off.

 

"I'm back!" she said brightly, "Sorry about that. I just really had to finish my job." She smiled apologetically. "Oh, I never got your name did I? Um, so what is you're name?"

The Doctor checked the TARDIS from inside again. 'Everything seems to be working...but the TARDIS seemed broken.' He said under his breath as he grabbed his cost again from the railing, putting it awkwardly on his back. Then he thought about the TARDIS itself. It's not like it could be stolen since the door was locked, and he couldn't bring it along. But if something here had disabled it, who knows if it could get inside? He stepped out, locking the TARDIS before noticing the ho-er, pony, was back. Hearing her questions he smiled. His name. His name...

 

'Oh, just call me the Doctor.' He said with a nod. She seemed to be very...outgoing. 'Well then, I suppose we should head back to Ponyville, Derpy Hooves.' The Doctor added as he began to walk towards the distant town. It still felt very odd bring on all fours and this low to the ground. As he walked he began to ask questions.

'So what's in like in Ponyville? Are there other Pegasi? How about ones like me?' He began.

"Doctor?" she repeated. Now that was a strange name. "Doctor of what?"

 

Her attention was drawn away from the question she'd just posed when he started asking about what it was like in Ponyville and if there were other pegasi about or ponies like him. "Well, yeah, of course there are. There's always been ponies in Equestria, even before Equestria was founded thousands of years ago; pegasi, and earth ponies, and unicorns. Everypony knows that. Why else would we celebrate Hearth's Warming Eve? Ponyville's really nice though. It's quiet and everypony there is nice, for the most part."

 

Derpy flew alongside the strange stallion as he followed her toward town. She raised an eyebrow in confusion at how he seemed to be having trouble walking. "Are you feeling okay Doctor? You seem to be having a little trouble walking..."

'Unicorns?' The Doctor whispered under his breath. 'Equestria? Hearths Warming Eve? They must have built an entire society, full of different races!' His attention turnedd back to the Pegasus.

'Oh...that. No, I'm fine. Thank you though. Just a bit disoriented I guess...' He responded without much thought. He was excited about this new world. It was so strange yet it seemed familiar.

 

'Are there any leaders? You say this place was founded, so it wasn't always like this, correct?'

 

(Sorry I'm being slow, this is my only post for tonight. But after tomorrow I'll be able to post more frequently. Sorry again!)

This pony was starting to strike her as being as odd as Pinkie Pie was. He whispered under his breath a lot, and asked questions anypony should already know. Derpy wasn't sure what to make of this stallion that called himself the Doctor.

 

"Are you sure you didn't hit your head Doctor? Because it seems like you've forgotten everything that everypony knows," she replied, "Everypony knows that Princess Luna and Princess Celestia rule over Equestria, every since the Elements of Harmony purged her from being Nightmare Moon. And of course it wasn't always like this. Before the princesses ruled here, and probably before they were even around the three pony tribes traveled here in search of a new land because their old one became too inhospitable to survive in. Honestly, there's a reenactment every year of the events that led up to Equestria's founding around Hearth's Warming Eve. Most towns do it out of tradition."

The Doctor nodded slightly and looked towards the ground.

 

'Oh, yes...im not traveling with a companion, of course i sound like a crazy fool...' he whispered before looking back up. 'Well, thank you. Another few questions though...who is Nightmare Moon? And Hearths Warming Eve? It sounds similar to an Earth holiday. What is it about? You said its a reenactment but is there any other form of celebrating involved? You mentioned other towns. What are they like? Do the races seperate in those towns? Is there racism, classism, anything here?' He asked at once as he tried ti build a picture of what this place was like.

Derpy blinked a few times. "I thought you said a few questions, not a bunch at once," she replied. Forget it being like Dinky; this was worse than Dinky. Even she never asked so many questions at once. Derpy tried to process them all at once and it looked like she was straining herself a bit.

 

"Um..,Nightmare Moon was something everypony thought was an old mare's tale until not that long ago. Princess Luna transformed into Nightmare Moon out of jealousy and spite or something like that and wanted to cloak the land in eternal night, and Princess Celestia had to use the Elements to seal her sister in the moon. That was over a thousand years ago according to the stories. She returned during the Summer Sun Celebration and tried to do the same thing again, but the Elements of Harmony found new bearers and they were able to cure Princess Luna of the darkness and get her back to normal, or that's what I heard anyway."

 

Now what were his other questions. Derpy went silent as she flew alongside the stallion trying to remember. Oh that's right; about Hearth's Warming Eve, and what Ponyville was like, right? "I don't get why you said 'a holiday like on Earth.' We are on Earth; Equestria's just part of it. Of course there's more to it than just the reenactment play. There's gift exchanges and silly hats and puffy sweaters and scarves and stuff like that."

 

She paused again to try and come up with a way to answer all his other questions. "Some towns only have one pony race in them. I mean, who's gonna find earth ponies or unicorns living in a place like Cloudsdale? They can't walk on clouds. They can visit with a special temporary spell, but not live there. Ponyville was founded by earth ponies several decades ago, but all the races live there. That'd be silly if we were racist or something, because then I wouldn't be talking to you, and my room mate and best friend wouldn't be an earth pony. Ponies can e whatever they want and most decide to take jobs that have to do with their special talents." Derpy laughed at the notion of herself being racist. Maybe this stallion really did have amnesia. Now she was starting to feel sorry for him.

The Doctor paused.

 

'Wait, we're on Earth? But how? How far is England? Where on Earth are we?' He began to ask. 'If we're on Earth i might be able to find one of my old friends. Surely theyd help me fix the TARDIS...speaking of that, i need to go back to the TARDIS. If we're on Earth...' the Doctor said, his voice trailing off. Even though they had come this far he turned back around and began to run back to where they had come from.

 

'First I need to grab something. Then i need a map of some kind. Can you get me that?' he asked as they ran back. If he could just find a way to make a short jump he might be able to find one of his old companions. Though they wouldnt know how to fix it, he was sure they could help him find how. Not that she wasnt helping him of course, just that she didnt...understand him

"England?" she repeated, "What's that?" He started whispering to himself however, oblivious to her question. When Derpy tried to ask again, the Doctor suddenly turned around and started galloping back the way they'd come. She took flight in order to keep up with the stallion by air. "Wait a minute!" she called after him.

 

He asked her to get a map after he grabbed something. He led the way back to that blue box of his and when they reached it, Derpy landed on the ground panting a little. "The post office would have one," she finally said, "It shows all the delivery routes throughout Equestria." Sometimes things needed to be delivered by train if it was too far to travel or too big.

The Doctor walked into the TARDIS and ran over to the center. 'And how far is the post office? If i can get a map and find exactly where we are i might be able to get there through the TARDIS. If its not too far, atleast...' he repsonded as he worked aon the panel in front of him.

 

'There!' he said as he stepped back. 'If im correct we might be able to get anywhere within a hundred miles. Unfortunately, if wwe go the full hundred the TARDIS might take even more damage. If only i knew why it was broken...' 

 

The Doctor stepped back out. 'So, we need to get to the post office and grab the map. If i can find one of my old friends this will all be solved!' he said with a smile.  'Now lead the way. I did what i needed to do.'

Derpy remained outside when the Doctor walked into his blue box. However, the door remained opened and she could see beyond it inside. She had to wipe her eyes to make sure she wasn't just dreaming up what she saw beyond the sliding door. "O-Oh, um, the post office is in town, near town hall. It's not that far," she replied. 

 

He went around doing things on the inside that Derpy couldn't see, but he kept talking even as he did so. He told her to lead the way back now that he'd done what he needed to do, but Derpy had a question of her own first. "Um, Doctor, what in Celestia's name is a Tardis?" she asked.

 

(He's gaining the use of his hooves a little too fast isn't he? He's never been a pony before.)

(He doesnt have to use his hooves for the TARDIS. Short version: hes connected to the TARDIS, and they mentioned that he can tell the TARDIS to do things. So thatll make up for the mistake )

 

'Well the TARDIS...Its a very complicated...car, so to say. But thats not important. What is important is that we get to the post office...wait, do you deliver mail?' he asked, wonder how they can use their hooves for something like that. It was just a flat sort of...thing.

 

'How does that even work here? Wouldnt the papers just slip? ...how do you hold anything here?' I can barely open the door with these things if i tried!'

(Oh, okay! Surprised he hasn't asked about the you-know-what on his rump yet either.)

 

Derpy blinked in confusion. "What's a car?" she asked. His attention shifted to her mail bag and he asked if she delivered the mail. She raised a brow. "Of course I do. Didn't you hear me when I said I needed to make one more delivery before I could help you out before?" she asked. He then asked how she even did it, how she even held anything when he could barely open the door. "I...deliver mail like I always do. Ponies use their mouths sometimes remember? We can pick up stuff with our hooves too..."

 

She was really starting to worry now. He must've hit his head really hard. Derpy didn't see any bleeding or bruises of any sort, but his spiky mane could easily be hiding it. "Are you sure you're okay Doctor? Because you're acting kinda crazy. Maybe I should help you get to the hospital?" She was just concerned with his well being.

'Oh yes...mouths...didnt think about that...' the Doctor whispered under his breath. 'And it seems they dont have cars. But this is Earth...'

 

'Oh no, im perfectly fine. Well, aside from the fact ive chan-er, nevermind. But thank you. Im perfectly healthy. So now we should start towards the post office. This will all be over quickly if we can find where exactly on Earth we are.' he said, slightly impatiently. Didnt she realize how urgent this was?

 

No. Of course she didnt. She probably assumed he was just lost. He was, just alot more lost than she realized.

She frowned a bit at his impatience. He didn't have to get all huffy about it. "For your information I know exactly where we are. We're near Sweet Apple Acres just outside of Ponyville, just south of Canterlot which is the home of the royal pony sisters in the center of Equestria. I'm just about the best mailmare in Ponyville so I have to know that. Just because I have crossed eyes doesn't mean I always mix up my directions..." She trailed off not wanting to get into such a conversation.

 

A sigh escaped the mare. She shouldn't be like that to a new pony, especially one that was lost and couldn't seem to remember what he even was. "Just follow me. I have to put my bag away anyway. No point taking it home since we're going to the post office anyway." She spread her wings and turned around in the air, heading once more toward town, assuming he'd just gallop after her.

The Doctor calmed himself so as to not talk back. No point in attacking a friend, especially when they were right. He checked the TARDIS one more time, still worried about it. Of course, nobody could get in. Only he could open it unless otherwise stated. But still, he worried. Sighing, he turned around and chased after Derpy.

 

'Do you know where England is?' he asked Derpy. 'Is it near here?' The Doctor hoped this plan would work. Though this was an intersting place. Hed have to come back here...wherever here was. Perhaps Earth in the future or past? Maybe. The Doctor pushed those thoughts aside. He just needed to find one of his companions and repair the TARDIS, whatever was messing it up.

The pegasus's good eye, her right eye, glanced down toward the Doctor while her left one decided to stay ahead. "What's England? Is it a place somewhere?" she asked in confusion, "Your accent sounds like somepony from Trottingham, but I don't know where that is personally. I just know it's pretty far from Ponyville." He wasn't making much sense at all, but her want to help him in any way she could was what was driving her instead of calling him crazy and getting the hospital involved. She didn't know much about him at all, and he seemed nice despite his impatience so it was better to just try and be friends with him.
