My Little Pony- Rescue at Midnight Castle observations

And, of course, a dash of critique.

I've watched this quite a few times already, and each time, I tend to notice a little bit more obvious plotholes and errors throughout, and just many things that bring up questions, and I'd like to get the opinions/ discussions of others on them.

If Scorpan was actually a king who lost his kingdom to Tirek, when he took it over; then shouldn't there have been other humans in said kingdom? What the heck happened to them?

Where the heck did Megan even come from, and how did Firefly even know about her? Considering that there were humans living in whatever world the talking ponies live in (as seen with pre-transformed Scorpan and ...whatever human subjects he obviously would've had to rule over), then I can only assume Megan came from a completely different world, since we don't see her pet pony talking, but whinnying like a normal horse; and she's obviously shocked that ponies, like Firefly can talk. (However, Firefly, on the other hoof, doesn't seem at all surprised to have encountered a human. In fact, not only does Firefly know exactly who to get for help (rather than the magic-weilding Moochic, who's obviously well-aware of the dire situation, right off the bat?) she even says for Megan to hop on her, like she's been ridden by one before.

Megan hauls a heavy pony out of the a well, by herself, and later tries to convince firefly that she's pathetically weak and not strong at all.

Firefly obviously made the right choice in getting help, because even with Megan (who, ironically is the first to get captured by Scorpan's second raid), two more ponies get captured as well, as soon as “the help” arrives. Megan has to be rescued, yet again, by the seaponies, because she can't save AJ after who falls into the water. Some help you, are Megan.

If the Moochic had Magic powers, then why didn't the go up against Tirec, himself? He knew that Tirec was trying to bring night for all eternity, but he sits and waits around for the ponies to come get the rainbow of light, instead of using the rainbow, himself. And on top of that, misplacing something so important, and wasting even more time looking for it. (yet, he tells the ponies there's no time to thank him)

The seaponies scare me. Instead of saving AJ and Megan as quickly as possible, like any reasonable rescuer would, they go through a whole musical number, while keeping AJ and Megan underwater, seemingly playing with them the entire time. (also- where did those neon spotlights come from, around the clam? O_O )

Why did Megan wait so long to use the rainbow of light, instead of having her pony friends waste time trying to steal and play catch with Tirek's rainbow of darkness? That was a waste of everyone's time.

There's quite a few more, according to this movie's wiki page

http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/My_Little_Pony_Special

but I think what I've listed might be enough for now.

All of these questions or point outs I've seen over and over and over and I cannot begin to tell you how mind numbing that is.

When I was a child I could easily say none of this every crossed my mind. It's PONIES! Oh no bad guy! Oh no help them megan! Oh no save them sea ponies! Awsome a pretty song! Oh no stop Tirek! etc etc.

But I'm older now... I watch it again...yup... i was a sad child I think back then to not see the obvious plot holes, lack of backgrounds on characters, how about Firefly litterally kidnapping Megan, the first human she sees to go help her friends?

I could rant on and on of what's wrong with Rescue from Midnight castle, but at this point, I just shut off my brain to it whenever I watch it and just try to find that childhood nolstagia from it all.

But I can say I can use what I know of the first episode now, and share it with younger MLP generations of today, where MLP first came from TV wise and what we see in G4...is just totally evolotionized of G1.

I'm just a silly little alicorn, trying to get by in the fandom ^^

Sorry to have brought up points all touched on before. I didn't think they had been, since I saw no topic about it. (and no way of knowing that you've heard them all before) But thanks for commenting, anyway, I guess, in spite of that.

Ponies kidnapping humans, evil centuars kidnapping ponies...it's such an ugly world. XD

Yeah, I guess as a kid, your mind really isn't aware of all the plotholes and junk; simply from the show being entertaining to a young mind. They never bother to question it and get caught up in the action and songs.

@@Nightmare Muffin,

Don't get me wrong, this is something thats not been brought up and obviously we MUST educate the younger generations of Bronies out there!

All the stuff you listed were merely known to me, I just assumed any brony of G1 would know them too.

Regardless, we MUST get the word out about Midnight Castle! The truth must be said!

Hasbro story's have more holes then queen cheese legs herself lol

I've watched/listened to this episode so many times its etched in my brain forever

I never understood the use for Megan. She really didn't do anything and was trivial to the story other than adding a human into the mix

I have to ask, is Rescue at Midnight Castle worth a watch? I mean, there are obviously cringe worthy moments, but looking at from an entertainment standpoint, should I check it out? I've been a fan of FiM since December 2012, and I've still never given it a shot. I've no interest in G2, and especially G3, though.

You can if you want but it isn't necessary just keep in mind, it was the mid 80s and it isn't FIM

it's not a bad watch, if you ignore all the plotholes and inconsistencies. The action scenes aren't all that bad

Never said it was bad, I rather like it myself but if one was to go into it expecting FIM material, then it might not be what they hoped for. The 80's was a whole different world then what we have now

  • 2 months later...

I LOVE the G1 pilot. While having the immortal 80s cheessiness, some plotholes (G4 has a lot of those, also, though) and some inconsistencies (That's what you say, but I can't say there wouldn't be inconsistencies in a world of marshmallow multi-colored equines?

Tirek was the most metal thing and still is the most radical character in MLP. Not even his monkey-cow-thing counterpart from G4 comes the least close.

And for all its faults, I think since this was the VERY first try of animation on a children's cartoon based on a toyline, aside from Transformers, you could forgive every single error the pilot has, since the following episodes would suffer a lot of problems, cinluding the movie.

Rescue at Midnight Castle has its moments of cheese paste much as anything you find even now yet it gave us one pony that found a loving place in many a heart:  Firefly!
