general media Best parents in anime?

When you watch an anime, usually the main character has the following relationship with a parent or both parents:

  • A parent is dead, and main character copes with that in some shape or form.
  • A parent is on "vacation" for the duration of the series
  • The parent doesn't exist.
  • The parent is a stupid character for convenience of the plot or fanservice (I'm looking at Maka's father, a clear-cut example from Soul Eater)

So here's an appreciation post to ALL THE GOOD PARENTS IN ANIME :D

I put Sanae and Akio Furukawa from Clannad because they are actually really cool parents in anime.

It's so weird because in real life, for the most part we all have some sort of parent figure, whether biological or adopted. Why is it so rare for main characters in anime actually have parents with screentime, I might ask?

Anyways, back to the title. What parents in anime are worthy enough to be mentioned here? Put a mom and a dad here.

Moms:

Trisha Elric (FMA)

Sanae Furukawa (Clannad)

Dads:

Fujitaka Kinomoto (Cardcaptor Sakura)

Akio Furukawa (Clannad)

Maes Hughes (FMA)

Who are the good parents of anime?

I'm having trouble thinking of genuinely "good" parents that you haven't already mentioned lol.  Umm...

Father:

Son Goku (Dragon Ball).  He gave his son Gohan rides on a flying cloud named Kinto'un.  He was cool with him befriending / emulating a perpetually angry green guy.  He showed tremendous faith in his son at certain points in the series.  Other things that are (bigger) spoilers.  I'm posting that, I don't care - I think Son Goku would be the awesome-est dad ever. xD

Mother:

Moro, the wolf goddess and adoptive mother of San from "Princess Mononoke."  Any reasons I provide will be significant spoilers, but I'm not even spoiler-ing them as I think everyone should see this movie at some point.  If you're reading this (yes YOU) and you haven't seen "Princess Mononoke," immediately go and seek it out.  Then come back to this thread and agree with me lol.

OMG YES! :D What an awesome couple <3 Not only are they great comic relief at times, but they also have a pretty substantial background. Great characters all around ^^

For dad, Gendo Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion takes the cake by far. He's extremely kind and supportive towards his son, watching over him and constantly encouraging him to accomplish great feats. He even puts his son in a robot and tells him to fight God and his babies. That's how much he cares.

Look at 'im. He even has glowing sunglasses.

For mom, Ragyo Kiryuin. By far. She lovingly caresses her eldest daughter by... well, it's too loving and beautiful for me to describe.

And just look at that rainbow hair. That's the sign of a great mom.
