The more I look into the show the more I love it

I have to say the more I delve into their characters and work out fanfiction ideas the more I see how brilliantly crafted they really are. It is the mark of good writing when you can say that a characters traits, strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and issues all revolve around a central theme they have. Characters I did not really get came into focus and made me love them. Even moments that people claim are out of character are actually totally plausable for them. Here are some examples I found through episodes and reviews that show the genius of their design.

Rainbow Dash craves loyalty and support just as much as she gives it. Her entire being is grounded on the fact that her friends and fans lift her up, she wants the same treatment she gives her own idols. That is part of the reason she loves scoots so much, because they share that mutual sisterly bond. Her fear is abandondment and being alone and she has crippling self esteem issues that she masks with her bragging heavy additude. Its once you see that is just her way of seeking validation and assurance from her friends she is so loyal to that they feel the same way that her character becomes clear.

Pinkie Pie craves smiles and happiness just as much as she exudes it. Her happy personality is something she does to make OTHER ponies happy, which in turn brightend up her day. She is rather prone to depression and sadness when she cannot make her friends smile, or when she unintentionally hurts them. She dedicated her life to bringing smiles to make her life feel worthwile, to give herself something to get out of bed and face the day. Its once you see how sincere her element is that you can feel as close as Maud does to her and take her goofy antics for what they really are. A gift of a smile from someone who only wants a smile in return.

Rarity craves generosity as much as she embodies it. Her devotion to her friends wirh her time and effort making beautiful things for them and trying to put her a effort into what she does is only tempered by her need for someone to validate her work and bring herself up to where she wants to be. She wants to be famous, but at the same time she will not compromise herself and stop being generous to her friends, and even when she does she corrects it.

Flutters is a given. Her need for kindness runs very deep as she has clearly had a traumatic childhood. But its that craving of kindnessthat drives what she does because she knows how cruel the world really is. You just need to see how she gets when something small and innocent like an animal (or her own damaged soul) gets hurt or threatened to see the depth of pain and rage under the surface. Yet its the kindness of her friends that have pulled her out of her shell so much that not even Minotaurs and Immortal beings of chaos can handle her tough love and personal brand of kindness. She has plenty of room to go and is still very shy but as Flutters likes to say "babysteps everypony"

Applejacks need for honesty is more stuble than the other ponies but it is there. She is a down to earth grown up pony because she needed to be at a very young age. Her parents passed, she tried to remove herself from it as much as possible until the honest truth that her family needs her just as much as she needs them set in. Hers is a character that wants to give a good life to her family and keep them together for as long as they can.

Honestly even adult television has less engaging and thought out characters. I am loving this series more by the minute. What do you like about the characters in the show and how they are written?

Well, not to be a fanboy or anything, but Friendship is Magic is the best animated series that's come out in years, and is my favorite animated show of the era. :)
Glad to know you really love the show, and I hope you get even more enjoyment from it in the future. :)

That's why I love Pinkie Pie. ^_^ The others are great characters as well, and just as lovable, but Pinkie Pie is extremely relatable for me. I love seeing anything that includes in character moments in the main cast, be it a fanfic or comic or video or, of course, the show itself. The characters are all great, funny as well as surprisingly deep, especially for a kids' show.

But what do you think of Twilight Sparkle? She was the only one of the mane six, I noticed, that you did not write about. I think she values her friendship so much because of how reluctant she was to make friends in the beginning. She drove them away, and the other mane five had to persist a bit in order to get Twilight to even tolerate their presence. She missed out on great experiences as a filly and only realized how much she had been missing after the series premiere. This is one of the reasons why I think she will/does make a good Princess of Friendship: because she understands not wanting other ponies, and knows how much you are missing by not engaging in these experiences.

In a world where television entertainment is pretty much dying it's awesome to have this show, it's general nature is so much better than crap like jersey shore and modern spongebob. Characters that don't rely on being dumb or being a jerk to everyone, animation that doesn't look like it was made by a five year old on go animate, writing that wasn't written by some jackass who just said "it's for kids I don't have to try". What I think is best is that this show hasn't gone unnoticed and gets the praise it deserves, this show is truly a testament to what happens when you try.

No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.

And then there's... ugh... this.

Okay I like the Episode, but Season 4 Pinkie Pie is just... unlikeable.

Hey Buck, what I love about the characters is basically the premise of this post - the depth of each character and the world that they inhabit is staggering. When you add in layers of your own perception and interpretation the series becomes more than the simple sum of it's parts. There is an idea on story telling that revolves around the concept of creating characters and stories that invite the audience to finish them. This is evident in movies like Star Wars - and Animation like My Little Pony.

Then there is the feels test. This I can't analyze. I almost don't want to know why it happens, but when I watch this show I feel like that 8 year old watching Saturday morning cartoons again. This show makes me feel happy ... and in the end ... that is all that matters. Not so much the why.

That's her worst moment by far. Let's just forget it. :P

I mean, she had some great episodes too (Too Many Pinkie Pies, Maud Pie...)
