We'll see a greater shift towards electronic production. Metal and such will still be around, but with advances in technology, Techno and other forms of electronic music is going to only continue to grow.

 

More experimental stuff will slowly become more mainstream. When I hear something like this, I think of the future, or as my friend describes it, "Alien music".

I am not all that hopeful for the future of popular music lol.  I feel as though the best music has come and gone.  And nowadays being able to play an instrument, sing, or even construct a discernible melody seem to be optional. xD  I'm not saying all modern music is bad, nor am I saying that all music of the future will be bad.  But a lot of it will be bad.  "Well what is 'bad' exactly?  Aren't you thinking subjectively?"  Etc.  Yes, and not entirely.  Because if, in the future, melody is abandoned altogether and replaced with random, unharmonious noises...  Is it really music anymore?  I can honestly go listen to a Rammstein song where the vocalist sounds like he's a disgruntled German in desperate need of a soothing cough drop (FYI, I loved Rammstein in high school - this comes from a place of nostalgic affection), and I can FIND a darn melody.  In music, melody is god.  Even if your melody falls downstairs at some point during the performance or deliberately teases the listener with a series of sour notes.  So long as there's something there for your ears that doesn't sound like two cats fighting.  And then one of the cats inexplicably EXPLODES.

 

I mean if you're into random noises I'm not going to judge; listen to whatever you like.  Even if you're into the Exploding Cat Symphony.  I won't attack anyone for liking something (unless you're blasting it from your truck with the windows rolled down OMG STAWP!).  I only ask that you say, "I'm going to listen to random noises now."  Rather than, "I'm going to listen to music now."

I desperately hope that happens lol.  Music has been slowly drifting farther and farther away from what I would consider enjoyable or even admirable.  I'd love it if popular music took a trip back to big band; where it was played by a large group of capable musicians on actual, for reals instruments.

Actually not even wrong. Though, even in 2014, swing in particular already had it's popularity boost under electro swing. Take something "old" and give it a new twist, viola. One of many examples of electro swing at it's peak in 2014:

Not sure if it's as popular as it once was though, haven't really heard much from it but then again I'm a bit ignorant nowadays with this style.

Right now, it seems like people want to be tugged on their nostalgia heartstrings, so the output has mostly been anything inspired from anything between the 70s and 90s, mostly.

Mind you, I'm a bit out of touch with whatever is popular on TikTok and such, but I know one that's very popular right now is Laufey, who is a bit controversial since people are arguing if it's jazz or jazz-inspired pop. Doesn't help that she's being pushed as "the savior of jazz" by the media, because their narrative is jazz died a long time ago when it hasn't. It's not been on the mainstream stage in quite a long while compared to other genres, but the seemingly random boost in popularity with her has definitely pushed an audience to dip their toes in music they would've otherwise never bothered trying to listen to (and I recommend that the opposite try the same in the other direction).

I'm a bit more in tune with drum and bass, so what I've seen is a seemingly random resurgence in dnb from the 90s again. It includes soundtracks as well, like in video games from that time period. Not to mention tons of breakcore (or just "-core" it seems) that've become popular.

The same stuff as there is now, but even worse. Music producers don’t do anything that hasn’t been done a million times already because they’re so petrified of innovating and taking a loss if it doesn’t succeed. But it’s always the ones who take the risk that reap the rewards, and then all the others rush to copy them. The same applies to books and movies too. Right now, the state of the music industry is stagnant, with Taylor Swift (who sounds EXACTLY like everyone else and only differs by having greater business acumen) standing on top of the world and raking in a billion dollars for playing it safe.

No one writes lyrics that rhyme, or melodies that inspire. It’s all boring, washed-out and poorly orchestrated. And it hasn’t changed in forever. So I have little hope for the future of music, if the present is any indication. But hey, for those who actually find something to like in the current state of things, take heart, you’re set for life.

500 years ago Fandango was hated in the same way as Reggaeton and even priests banned it because it incited "indecency." The same thing happened with the Blues.

The future is that the hated "reggaeton" (Rosalía is an example) will soon be like Blues, Rock, Jazz, Flamenco or Fandango: A style that will be studied in the most prestigious music schools. 

Don't get me wrong: Reggaeton is musically the most efficient thing you can do to make money. I do not hate it. Although I find it very strange that so many feminist girls like it with lyrics like "I don't know whether to give you a kiss or a bone." Although when I listen to "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC it's not that I'm really thinking about going to hell, just having a good time.

But when I defend Reggaeton I am always criticized, and for me it is evident that it is genius.
