Yeah, it's weird because the auto-test defaults it to ultra but it even have a few dips on just high-settings with a couple things tweaked higher.

The auto settings were so amazingly far off the mark for me. Adjusting a few of the settings manually made a big difference without resorting to making the game look like total crap.

I thought Fallout 3 at low settings looked horrible until I saw Serious Sam 3 on low settings. It looks like a low-end PS2 game.

Kinda sad considering the original was pretty crazy at release. Full on 3D in supermassive environments with enemy counts that were basically Doom.

Second Encounter still the best of the series imo. I remember fighting it out in room that was basically a giant rotating cylinder. Loved those gimmicky rooms.

Well, guys. Last two parts, the SSD and hard drive, have been ordered. Case was delayed to tomorrow, but it's still ahead of schedule. Looks like I'm building my first PC next week.

Have you tried using Malwarebytes?

The trial is free. :)

You could also try Avira's free antivirus. It's pretty good; I've used it for years and never even got a virus. The only thing I don't like about it is the annoying popups.

This is your first build? For some reason I had the impression that you had done this all before... probably just because you seem to know what you're doing.

What SSD are you getting? Personally, I'd go for one of the Crucial mx100's.

Yup, my first build. As for the storage, I went for a 256GB Crucial MX100 and a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black. Still have $137 left over, which should be more than enough for a third, smaller hard drive.

As for security, ESET Smart Security master race.

Crucial SSD and Western Digital. Yep, you know what you're doing. ;)

Though I am curious, what do you need a third drive for? It seems to me like if you need more storage than that, it would be better to get a 256gig SSD and then run 2 WD blacks in RAID. Unless you're going to use a dual boot system, or something... maybe a network drive? I dunno.

Bulk files like virtual machines. I like having as much storage space as possible.

I see. Well I guess that does make sense, better to have that on a separate drive than have it clog up the one for files.

Speaking of which, I know I'm going to need to buy more storage sometime in the near future. I only have 50 gigs left on my SSD, and 40 on my HDD. In order to install any new games, I'd have to uninstall some ones that I never or rarely play... which isn't a problem, but I don't really want to do that. I'm long overdue for an OS reinstall and drive wipe, anyway. It's just a matter of not being lazy and actually doing it.

But I've also considered something else. I'm thinking I can replace my laptop's HDD with the 160GB SSD I have in my desktop now, and then get the mx100 512 gig for Star Citizen... because that game is huge, and it would most definitely benefit from being on an SSD. But again, it's all about playing the waiting game.

Mine has a like 6-7 SATA ports and and can mount four mechanical HDDs so I might save up and get a huge one for extra storage later on. I have two 1TBs in here so I'm good for now.

This came today and I hooked it up.

It's still not showing up in any monitoring software but I assume that's because I need to reset the computer for before it will.

Is it safe to to use the optimal setting on my motherboard(in the bios where you can change from power-saver, balanced, or optimal) or should I get a better CPU cooler first?

As of now the CPU maxes out at 54 Degrees in heavy gaming and the GPU stays there at full load without even speeding it's fans up.

1. Get a better CPU cooler first.

2. That's Maxwell all right.

Having seen the space I'm working with, what's a good one under $30?(preferably a flat-one and not one of those ugly Pentium 4 style upright ones)

Pentium 4 was actually flat. Trust me, I have two Pentium 4 PCs in my closet.

Anyway, can't seem to find any good ones under $30 nor with the style you want, aside from this, but Noctua's color scheme ain't for everyone. Unless your name is Linus Sebastian, then you absolutely adore everything about them and their fans. It's also a bit more expensive.

Of course, if you want a less ugly color scheme but don't mind spending more than $60, there's this. I swear I'm not recommending a Phanteks cooler because I'm using a Phanteks case.

Now that I think about it, I meant a Pentium II XD.

Thanks, hopefully prices will drop by the time I'm in the market for one.

Ouch, the face some stuff I just looked up said some of the Intel onboard chips are better than that GPU leads me to think it's pretty outdated.

I'm curious if I should try OCing my GPU a little with MSI since the stock of 1200Mhz doesn't seem to be making it break a sweat heat-wise but I'm not sure if that would do anything on something like a FTW that's already factory OC'd.

So, should I try fiddling with any of the OC stuff in afterburner, or not?
