That aside, I wouldn't feel comfortable without one and I like swimming.

I can only manage being pranked like that and Rarity looking over from her Chaise lounge and commenting to Twilight about me compared to other stallions

I haven't been swimming in decades.  This is because I'm 70 lbs overweight & IMO, I look like Hell in a bathing suit.  Still, except for T, none of the ponies have ever seen a human before & have no idea how you are supposed to look.  Just remember, you can get sunburned anywhere.  You think a sunburned back is bad news?  You do not want to get sunburned elsewhere.

 

In Leap of Faith, Granny Smith wore a bathing suit, so it shouldn't freak them out too much.  You could explain about melanin & tans.  T & possibly F would find it interesting.  The others would probably be MEGO.

I'd wear a swimsuit purely for the genital support.  I find I need some support down there.  Otherwise it's just uncomfortable.

Meh, they don't know human anatomy, so I don't really care. I mean, I wear a bathing suit under my clothes most of the time, but if I had no access to one, then whatever, in the nuddy pants it is.
