How many are there?

If we were to take the number of ponies plus the other characters from the show and totaled up every single last one of them from FIM, How many characters are there?

This would also include fan named characters! Every character that has a name, cutie mark, or fan name that has ever appeared in the show, even if it is just a head in one very partial clip...What would the number total out too?

Then, how many characters would it be if we counted all of the previous gens ( not including already used names that were reused in FIM)

I would really like to know if there is more ponies than pokemon or more pokemon than ponies. If so, how much more?

Well...

According to my counting of the lists of ponies on mlp.wikia.com, there are roughly 1291 characters in the show (i.e. 67 non-pony characters, 584 earth ponies, 306 pegasi, 165 unicorns, and 169 foals), and that includes every main, side, and background character that has appeared in the show. However, this does not include the Equestria Girls exclusive characters, nor does it include the ponies that appear in the comics.

There are roughly 50 characters exclusive to Equestria Girls and Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks (not counting the human reincarnations of background ponies; only characters that have no pony counterpart, excluding Sunset Shimmer and Flash Sentry. The Dazzlings are included). According to my calculations, this would bring up the total amount of characters of the fourth generation to roughly 1341.

As for the comics, there are roughly 453 exclusive characters (i.e. 386 ponies, and 67 non-pony characters), so if we include this as well as the amount of show characters, we would get roughly 1744 characters. This, however, does not include the Equestria Girls exclusive characters, and if we were to include those: we would get a grand total of 1794 characters belonging to the fourth generation of the My Little Pony franchise.

Now, because this already towers over the amount of Pokémon (i.e. 649) by 1145 characters; I feel there is no need to go into the previous generations because the answer to the OP's last question has already been answered, and counting up the previous generations' ponies would be unnecessary.

"Rarity is #1 tho", according to a certain user.
