Post picture of yourself thread?

Sir Hugsalot

Recommended Posts

I was thinking a bit recently and I noticed that thread "Post picture of yourself can be opened by anyone and pictures could be saved easily on desktop (there is even number of downloads mentioned in our profile settings). I think that it is not good thing, because that means everyone can easily access it and with some pictures one can easily track down a certain user and put his hand on sensitive personal data. We know reputation, bronies have and how dedicated some haters are. Someone can use those informations to hurt user he tracked down and such situation should be avoided.

So, how about restricting access to thread only for users who wrote 5+ posts? Just like life advice section? It will make people feel safer about posting their pictures and will for sure help in protecting their privacy as well.

I agree with this. Who knows who'll get made fun of because of their appearance?

What if they really want to see pics and make 5 posts quick ?

You mean a hater would image-search a brony from his/her pic and bash him/her on facebook ?

I did that to my friend's picture on here and found her name and second name on some random site. With those I've found her facebook. And her hometown. Yes, they can find the person that way.

Barely anyone will write 5 posts for that thread when there are easier places to do that elsewhere, trust me :P

I've seen similar threads on other forums, and no problems have ever arisen from that. I don't see how this is any different.

This forum had some trolls etc in past (and probably still some try to get on to do some damage) and is well known across the web. So far there were no problems, but many people who became victims to internet bullying too assumed it will never happen to them. In this case - better safe than sorry if such change to thread is possible.

There's no way to restrict post access for a single thread, that feature is only applicable to forums and user groups.

Creating a place for 'sensitive' topics to go and altering viewability access to Guests and Blank Flanks would be the only real way to do this.

Hugs, restricting access by topic ID is something that doesn't current exist, however it may be something that we should look into as a minor layer of protection on some sensitive threads. Also another possibility for threads like these would be to also display the OP as first post on every page. That way a cautionary note can be placed there and seen by everyone.

I'll discuss these with the team and circle back.

As others have already said, it's currently not possible for this restriction to be placed on individual threads.

Additionally, it would do very little by way of protection. I have encountered some members in my time here who are violent, disturbed, or otherwise dangerous individuals, and you wouldn't be any safer if they had their hands on your picture than if some random troll waltzing by did. That's why I've never posted my picture in that thread.

I don't think anyone else should, either, but that's just my personal opinion. If we were able to bar guests and members who have under 5 posts from viewing that thread that'd be something, at least.

If I may make a suggestion here. As you can't presently put topics in a protected status like you can for sub forums, I'd see it best to create a new sub forum for personal data type topics, (probably below the Life Advice one). We have topics like the 'Skype exchange master thread', 'post a picture of yourself' and even a 'What's your sexuality?' topic. All of which contains personal data that a lot might not want any random user to see. Sure it's one of these things where if you don't want any random user to know stuff about you, don't post it, however I don't think every member thinks about these things when they do make posts in such topics or don't want to be worrying about random users.

Moving all personal data topics into a protected sub forums would be more efficient in my opinion. Just a simply idea that is already do-able as of now.

@,  This is quite a valid concern you have, thanks for mentioning it. If certain threads could have additional security it would make the forums all the more safer and a better place to be in.

Restricting the thread, while offering some protection from a troll or guest, may also lead to a false sense of security. As SCS pointed out, there have been members here who been found to be violent in nature. They would be able to see your pic. Also, if someone honestly was intent on doxing - 5 posts would do little to discourage them.

The idea of an sticky message warning people not to use photos that would reveal NPI/PII/PID (fancy acronyms that basically mean personal info) would be more worthwhile. Reminder to not post what can be traced.
