In "Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell" p. 4 : "She [Twilight] didn't care about all the shiny jewels and castle rooms she'd been given." She only moved to Ponyville because of her friends/studies of said friends. I think all the princesses have their own rooms in the Canterlot castle as a courtesy. Afterall Celestia and Luna lives there and Cadence used to live there. The full paragraph reads: "Although it was very exciting for Twilight to become an Alicorn, she didn't take her new gifts for granted. It was an honour to be part of something so rare. She didn't care about all the shiny jewels and castle rooms she'd been given. She was happy to remain in Ponyville for now. She loved to spend time in her library with Spike, the baby dragon who was her number-one assistant, and having barrels of fun with her best friends. Ever since Princess Celestia had sent Twilight away from Canterlot to study and learn the magic of friendship, she had felt that Ponyville was her true home." She then did lots of small jobs around ponyville and saved the money. The main jobs I can think of are tutoring, gem collecting/selling and adventuring. The first 2 are pretty straightforward but how does she get paid for adventuring you may ask? Well think about it, almost every adventure episode is fighting some evil and neutralizing it, ya know the evil that can hurt or at least scare other ponies? So Twi and her friends are kinda like exterminators. Also, there's Castle mania, NOPONY would ever just renovate an ENTIRE CASTLE without a large pay! Lastly for those of you who don't think Twi could save that much money, she has friends for pretty much every need! Spike= mail pony, pet owl = endless quills, Rarity= clothing, AJ= food, Pinkie=entertainment, Fluttershy=free housecleaner and RD=random friend to get money off of. So ya! Oh the house is absolutely a freakin mansion, talk about the works! But there's one important thing you have to be aware of, it's made of clouds. Pegasi move around clouds for a living, and it's doubtful they're not free (if anything, that cloud-marble might actually cost a little money). And the construction would be a snap, the stuff weighs next to nothing. At best, Dash could possibly add an entire room to her house by herself for free in... maybe an afternoon? At worst, assuming this construction is a professional thing... Materials: Several times easier to procure and move than ground-based homes Construction: Several times easier to shape and fit than ground-based homes Time and cost: likely several times less than ground based homes because of the above. But what I wonder is, how does she keep it from blowing away in a storm? Does Dash ever wake up and have to push her house a few miles back to Ponyville? Hah, now I'm wondering if Dash might have just taken her Cloudsdale home and just pushed it all the way to Ponyille when she moved. Do you honestly think Celestia would just let Twilight starve? The question is, how does she justify the payments to the taxpayers? Student stipends would come from Celestia's school.
