Could Doctor Whooves ever time travel?

I was wondering, How could Time Turner time travel in the context of the show? first and foremost, I really think a TARDIS is out of the question. Doctor who is a show that's copywrited and if Clockwork ever used a TARDIS in the actual show, Hasbro would get sued. Also, even though we saw Twilight Sparkle use a time travel spell in the episode "it's about time", we know that's out of the question because Doctor Whooves is not a unicorn. So the question is, how else could the Good Doctor time travel in the show??????

PS.

we know he has to be capable of time travel (or something time related) because his cutie mark is an hour glass.

(He isn't the only pony who has a hourglass cutie mark).

I don't think he'll ever be able to time travel, his character is just a little reference to Doctor Who.

From what I've read, his hourglass cutie mark is linked to his occupation of managing clocks and stuff. At least, that's if you take this card's description (bottom half) as canon:

Mayor_Mare_and_Time_Turner_trading_card.

As for time-travelling, well, something similar to a TARDIS is one possibility, though certainly less advanced than the one the Doctor owns. Maybe just a regular time machine without the whole 'bigger on the inside' part, possibly even 'smaller on the inside'. Sure, Equestria isn't very technologically advanced, but what's not to say something like a time travel machine isn't possible in its future? And it could also be that Time Turner doesn't make the machine travel in time himself, but rather relies on the assistance of some unicorns and their time travel spells, or maybe just a rift of temporal magic of some sort (kinda like how the Doctor needed to recharge the TARDIS on top of the rift in Cardiff before), which can be kept as energy that needs to be refilled from time to time.

That's just speculation on my part, though ;)

I've never seen any shipment of those two mind you I haven't been looking but ushally it's derpy and Dr whooves the dumb blone assistant and all that

While the Doctor has had rather dim assistants on occasion, out of the 55 or so companions he's had over the years, only small number of them have been blonde. And the combination 'dumb blonde' only lands on Jo Grant and Rose Tyler. And to be honest, Rose isn't so much dumb as completely self-centered and self-absorbed.

On topic, here's something to think through. The character of the Doctor is known to regenerate, completely changing his form and appearance. He's done this 12 times (plus an aborted attempt) officially, and it has been implied that he may have done so at least eight additional times prior to the first televised appearance. In his seventh official incarnation, it was revealed that he will at some time in the future/past be Merlin (as in the Arthurian legend).

Starswirl the Bearded was the creator of a time travel spell, though the version Twilight got ahold of seemed rather limited. And has been noted by the FiM creative team as being Equestria's version of Merlin. For that matter there are hints that Starswirl might actually be Merlin; Equestria being where he went when he was imprisoned in the Crystal Caves by Niviane. The description of the Crystal Caves in the Vulgate Cycle being interestingly close to how the caves beneath Canterlot Castle appear, plus of course 'Canterlot'.

So, taking the storylines from both properties: Time Turner may not only be the Doctor, but be a regenerated Starswirl the Bearded. :comeatus:

As such, I have no doubts at to his ability to travel through time. It wouldn't even surprise me to find out that the big hourglass in the middle of the Starswirl wing of the Canterlot Archives is a TARDIS. :pinkie:

What's so convincing about this theory is that it also explains Starswirls supposed disappearance better then the Starswirl = Discord theory

For time travel in general, there are some fics about character time traveling.  The Reset series has Twilight caught in a time loop & Star Swirl being brought forward to help deal with some problems, for instance.

However, I don't recall ANY pony time travel stories w nonmagic time travel.

As to an hourglass cutie mark representing something to do w clocks or time, it could be a talent for glass blowing (maybe a short fic about how irritating it is for every pony to make that mistake).  Or, perhaps, death.  Or that the pony was a real clock watcher, always looking for classes (or work) to be over.
