@@Gloomfury, The colt face hoofed. "In the name of the Kaiser you're going to get yourself into trouble. Listen, we've got different rules around here. Flits raised an eyebrow. "Cause it's fecking child labor? That not really a good thing. Making kids work when the grown ups should. I mean paying them to do a little jobs like news paper carriers and cleaning stores here and there ain't bad. But making them work in textile factories, mines or anything that would seem hard for a kid doesn't sound really good for them. My first job was cleaning my dads pub. Clearing tables, moping floors, cleaning the bathroom.  But at least I got paid. Do they even get payed? Sure it's punishment but they're still kids. That'll be like making a elderly pony run twelve miles seven times at full speed. We just let the parents handle their kids at least till they're eighteen. Then we just sent them to boot camp for a few months.

Can ya just let this slide? I mean it just some silver, not the crown jewels.

Also why shoot if they run? Ain't ya fast enough to catch them without violence or the chance of killing them? I thought life is more important then some silver? At least that was how I was brought up."

@@Gloomfury, "Do they get payed?" The other guard said. "I started working in the mines when I was ten, up till I a became a guard. I was bringing home more dough than my own father. And my only complaint was how monotonous the work was. You get bored pretty quickly when all you do is the same thing over and over again. It was kind of nice when a trouble maker was brought in to work with us because they added something new and interesting in comparison whenever they came about." "My mother has the second shift, so when schools out I'm pretty much on my own. If I'm not working somewhere doing my time, I'm probably doing something I shouldn't be according to the law." Glatt said. "If we let it slide, we'd lose our jobs for not properly doing our duty, and it wouldn't be fair to everypony else we've arrested, which for me has mostly been this little bugger here. I'll probably be adding even more time to what he already owes sometime in the near future." The main guard said. "And we shoot only if they don't comply. They're always warned first unless they're armed or being a threat which is rare since weapons aren't really allowed within the city. It acts as a discouragement, mostly to others than them. It also gave the snipers more realistic target practice. Not that they've shot anypony in years for this city though, so I guess it's worked as far as discouragement goes. It's kind of needed, since thieves only receive work for labor, and to those with a job, that usually means overtime with no pay and less days off so the punishment itself isn't very high. Now if you added assault to the mix then we're talking something completely different. But we also do it because we are the highest authority on the streets, and we maintain that by using our training the way it was meant to be used. We're not just police, we're soldiers first and foremost. When we give an order, it is to be followed, or result in swift action, that I'll admit is harsh, but it maintains our way of life."

The Medeis diplomats were still on their ship, adrift wherever it was that the the soldiers towed their ship to. They were all below deck, sitting in front of an activated crystal slab. The diplomats had been talking through the the slab to their leader, Crystal Tower, making him aware of the situation.

"So, you said that there had been a war, or battle? Which side was victorious?" Crystal Tower asked.

"We did not see the majority of the battle, but the invaders seemed to be much, much better equipped then Cidonia They definitely possess magic that we do not, as we saw that they had command of metal clouds that flew through the sky."

"Hmm. Then, it is clear what you must do. Forget Cidonia, we have nothing to gain from speaking to a state that is most likely now dancing on the strings of these invaders. In fact, it's rather doubtful that any of the Cidonian leadership is still alive. If they have been killed, make sure you secure their corpse, we'll be able to use it later. Scour the city, it is almost certain that these invaders have a presence here. See if you can't get in touch with their leadership. These ponies are definitely what we've been looking for. Crystal Tower out."

The diplomats hurried to carry out Crystal Tower's orders, and they quickly sailed the ship back to the harbor. Once docked in the harbor, they rushed off the ship, eager to carry out their mission.

@@Gloomfury, The orphanage was a building of gothic style with several pointed arches, a high center tier that cast a long pointed shadow across the street with crossed slots on all four sides, and another on each corner of the building with a shorter and more widened appearance. The whole building itself was of a rather dark grey color, with a dim green patina coating on the doors, window sills, and tiers. A similarly colored sign hung above the twin doors that read 'Bayonet Orphanage', and a small face appeared by a curtained window for a second, before disappearing again. A small bell could shortly be heard ringing from the inside.

Before I came here a mate of mine asked me to see what the orphanages were like here. I sometimes help out the one back home. Would ya mind if I givin' me a tour?"

"Why I'd be most delighted. This orphanage has some history to it. Come along children. Let's show Mr.McCullin what we've done with the place." She waved a hoof over her head gesturing at the whole place before proceeding down a hallway. "A little over a century ago, this building was originally constructed along with several others, to serve as miniature fortresses throughout the city. You may have noticed the the slots in the tiers, which are for giving wide range to our soldiers back when we still somewhat relied on crossbows rather than the rifles they carry now. In the top tier, there is also a bell to act as an alarm for in case of an emergency, and there is still a system set up in place for its use. The building was repurposed for being a barracks soon after the cities outer wall was constructed. Even that is being considered obsolete now, and new defenses are in the works of being built elsewhere, but the old ones are never completely discarded, and even establishments as hols as these are checked regularly to ensure that they can still function. These barracks in particular were special, for they were home to the Kaiser for some time." She stopped outside of a very large room. "Here is where the soldiers slept, and where the children to now. There are exactly one hundred bunk beds total, but we only have 53 children here present. Most of them are currently at school or being watched as they play throughout the city by the many governance we have, whom we train as a second role to providing care for orphans. With the Kaiser, then being the crown prince, staying here, arrangements were made for every bed to meet palace expectations, since his highness preferred to stay with his brothers in arms than remain comfortably at home, even with it being so close. His bed is at the far end of the room, bed number 12, bottom bunk." She said with a proud smile. They continued on to the mess hall and kitchen. "It was seen as a waste of expenses to have soldiers be trained in the city where they couldn't properly get down in the dirt without marching out several miles, and not presenting the ideal image of our grand military to the public. It was once again repurposed for mostly the storage of bayonets, and finally turned into an orphanage about fifteen years ago. That's how it got its name, and still stores a few thousand bayonets in disclosed rooms. I came to be in charge of this place some six years ago, when the original lady of the house passed a way and I was offered the opportunity to raise those who most needed my help. I was a graduate of the first class of governesses here, and knew how to run the place by the time it became my turn to. Here is where we eat and prepare our meals. We receive Daily deliveries of fresh milk and other perishables, where as we receive weekly shipments of other necessities like oats and other grains. We grow our own fresh fruits and vegetables in a courtyard down the street, and can much of it for later use, especially during the winter." She takes them to a point where the hall splits into two parts, one continuing straight and the other turning right. "In front of us lays what used to be the officers quarters, which were rather pointless since nearly every guard here was one themselves, as young as they were, and it has since been converted to the rooms of the governesses and myself. From them you can see the orphanage's courtyard, where the children who are to young to be roaming about play for parts of the day, and practice daily excercise." She leads them down the turned hallway. "Through here is a band room which still has the original military instruments, and we use them for the older children to practice with. We are rather well known for the musical talent our children have. Through here is also a few practice rooms for things such as fencing, which an officer comes once a month to teach, even though the military uses a different set of sword fighting for combat purposes, along with a studio where they practice things such as painting, poetry, and there own personal projects. It can get a little messy at times and there was even an instance involving a fire. At the end of the hall there are two staircases and a small hoof cranked elevator which is not permitted for us to use. The upstairs is used for storage, while the downstairs holds a safe room in case of emergencies and is fitted with everything two hundred soldiers would need to hunker down for at least a month. There is also a door in which we are not allowed beyond down there for reasons having to do with national security. And that's just about it. Do you have any questions Mr.McCullin?" She said with a lightly exhausted, although very proud smile.
