TheMarkz0ne 962 March 9, 2015 Share March 9, 2015 Just found out her name tonight. Not too much to go off of since we don't know much of her. I look at her and she seems like the most imposing villain next to Chrysalis. Shimmer, Discord and Sombra had this stereotypical villain demeanor. Glimmer looks pretty creepy. I can just imagine Glimmer doing some Agent Smith thing to Twilight and try to convert her to the equal mark borg. Maybe Glimmer can talk about how equal gives us purpose. And that we're not here because we're free, we're here because we're not free lol.

AlbaTross 1,586 March 10, 2015 Share March 10, 2015 I don't know about her being Agent Smith. Maybe the Agent Smith in the first film who isn't just trying to rule the matrix. I think Starlight Glimmer's less about ruling and more about putting an end to uniqueness and talent for her own personal reasons, possibly because she was shown up in the past by other ponies. The whole scenario actually reminds me more of a short story I had to read in high school, but I can't remember the name of it. Then again she could easily take over Equestria if she is able to stop ponies from resisting her, and possibly form her own personal army. The thing that really stands out to me is her name. How many synonyms can the writers come up with for Twilight Sparkle that have the same number of syllables. Next thing you know there will be a character named Sunset Shimmer...oh wait. Cwanky 17,567 March 10, 2015 Share March 10, 2015 I had a chance to look at Starlight Glimmer's credited lines so far in the official wiki: "Only way to be really happy is if we're all equal." — Cutie Markless, Part 1 or Cutie Markless, Part 2 "When the rest of Equestria sees that a princess gave up her cutie mark to join us, they'll finally understand what we're trying to accomplish." — Cutie Markless, Part 1 or Cutie Markless, Part 2 Inb4Communism. But really just with this type of character and her modus operandi and potential motives are far more sophisticated than what's been seen in the show or comics thus far. Compared to her, Queen Chrysalis is an amateur pushover, Discord is a mildly annoying housefly (not that he isn't at times ) and the likes of Nightmare Moon, Sombra and Tirek are just crude and clumsy compared to her. Manipulating a whole town and subverting morals? This is on the scale of a Ra's Al Ghul or Heath Ledger Joker villain sophistication and I love it so far. Its actually nice to see a villain that breaks the cliched and traditional "muahaha I'm gonna destroy you and conquer everything" routine. If the Flim and Flam brothers were significantly smarter and more ambitious, Starlight Gimmer is what you might get, in male twin forms that is.
Wind Chaser 4,768 March 11, 2015 Share March 11, 2015 (edited) These kinds of assimilating antagonists are not really 100% new or unique to any one franchise. It goes beyond Agent Smith. You could say the Borg and the Cybermen belong in the same classification. Where they vary is in their execution, their backstory, and their motivations. Agent Smith desired to completely wipe the Matrix and the real world because of his nihilistic belief that life is intrinsically meaningless and will never have any meaning. He did not seek to improve anyone's life, instead stealing their free will and taking their whole identities over. He was more malicious than what Starlight will be. Starlight only wants to "improve" everyone's life by eliminating a common point of contention: special talents with different values to society that may lead to envy and mistrust. She did not steal anyone's free will. So far it is implied that her village "gave up" their cutie marks and/or were possibly manipulated into doing so without thinking of the implications. From that, we can see that Starlight is more of a dark grey in terms of morality in comparison to Smith who firmly wears the black hat (or really, suit). As for their relationships to the protagonists, Starlight seems connected to Twilight as Smith is to Neo, however where Smith represents Neo's opposite, Starlight represents Twilight's extreme (Sunset Shimmer in EqG1 was her opposite). Whereas Smith existed to undo everything Neo did (to "balance the equation", as it were), Starlight stands for the extreme interpretation of what Twilight stands for. Harmony without individuality is conformity. It is Equestria and Twilight Sparkle's upholding of the values of individuality in harmony that will be tested in the Season 5 premiere, differing from previous adventures where harmony itself was tested in the face of villains who wanted to destroy it. Prince Firemane 309 March 12, 2015 Share March 12, 2015 Starlight Glimmer, to me, seems to be a lot like Kuvira from The Legend of Korra. Kuvira attempted to get Korra on her side because she would have personal and some political play as she was the Avatar, but tried to kill her when Korra refused. Starlight Glimmer will probably try to get Twilight on her side because of her political and personal position in Equestria as a Princess, not to mention close access to Celestia's, Luna's and Cadance's cutie marks. When Twilight refuses ((of course she will)), Starlight Glimmer will most likely do whatever she can to get Twilight's cutie mark. She also seems like Kuvira in the sense that she wants what is generally a good thing for everypony and will go to any lengths to get it, but also wants everypony to know that she is the one that spearheaded it, that she was the one who sought to right this injustice. She probably wants general equality as a power ploy in order to get ponies to look up to her as a leader and probably wants the classic villain plot of wide-spread domination.
