How did Rarity not realize Applejack was wearing one of her dresses?

In Simple Ways near the end, Rarity asks Applejack where she got the dress to which AJ responds that it is one of hers. Huh? How could Rarity not know? I understand some could say she has so many or an old one and forgot, but for Rarity I still find it hard to believe someone could wear one of her dresses and her not recognize it. Also, how did AJ manage to get it anyway? Did she break into Carousel Boutique? Have Sweetie Bell get it/let her in?

To be fair if I was Rarity's sibling I would let one of her friends in to borrow a dress; specifically if it was for shoving how ridiculous Rarity was acting right in her face.

She has made so many dresses and maybe she has never never seen anypony wearing the one Applejack took, that makes sense she didn't recognize it.

And yeah maybe she asked Sweetie Belle, but if she broke in, the end justifies the means anyway.

Its likely that Applejack just borrowed it, probably from Sweetie Belle. But its also quite likely that the dress was given to Applejack by Rarity herself as a gift or as an act of generosity and that she simply forgot about it. Remember, Rarity is shown to be frequently busy and preoccupied with her work, so its not as if she can keep track of every single article of clothing she designs.

Not to mention that Rarity wasn't exactly herself in that episode. Considering her state of mind in regards to Trenderhoof I can see her forgetting about one individual dress out of many.

She was VERY in character as a pony with "Simple Ways," so much so, she did not even notice that she made that dress. Or maybe she was overcome with the fact that AJ was the one wearing it. Or MAYBE she was too concerned about Trenderhoof liking her to notice. I mean, she went as far as working on a farm, changing the ceremony theme, and blowing off the rest of her duties as the designer to impress him. It wouldn't be too far fetched to say she was very distracted , all because "He doesn't like me because he has a crush on Applejack , even though I've had a crush on him ever since the beginning of time, and it's NOT FAIR!"

I am not sure, maybe rarity just didn't remember that particular dress. When people make so many of something it might be hard to remember which ones are yours if you don't keep track.

 

Maybe it was something that was made a long time ago and applejewle just didn't wear it until than?
