Yeah it should probably be the Mane 7, but Spike occupies a strange role.  He's a male non-pony who's younger than the rest of the Mane 6 yet arguably older than the CMC, so he really doesn't fit in with any of the group we follow.  Probably why Spike episodes deal with him on his own rather than pairing him up with someone.

Spike isn't a pony nor an element of Harmony, so I'll stay with "mane 6" (but he's still a main character).

It's only the mane 6. Spike may be a main character but he is neither a pony or an element of harmony (or at least he tried to be).
