I like the forth but it also depends on what kind of style you're going for.

 

in my opinion the first is best if you want that 2D feel to it while it remains 3D modeling. the third the shadows are too deep but could work for perhaps a more nefarious pony.

Hm... I like the first the best, as it makes sure not to obscure the detail too much within the shadows. But related to what the above poster said, do you want to give the impression of 2d or 3d?

I was actually working on finding a way for 3d to look like more traditional 2d work. 

 

So far the first one is what I've heard getting the most favor.
