gaming mod Wii U for GC discs?

So yeah I've seen these homebrews called Nintendont and Devolution that play Gamecube ISOs on the Wii U. They do not however, play the disc natively. You have to load it from USB or SD card.

Wii = Gamecube

Wii U = Wii

So surely...

Wii U = Gamecube

Pretty sure those programs take advantage of the Wii U having everything necessary to boot Gamecube games... is that true?

So I guess the setback is that the disc drive won't read MiniDVDs. Maybe the console's drive could be changed to accept Gamecube discs? Or an adapter that goes into the USB port on the Wii U?

MiniDVD reading + Gamecube hardware + Gamecube controller adapters = Gamecube back compatibility on Wii U! :D

And of course, my cousin and I give our humblest respects to Satoru Iwata... <:(

I'll probably try some of these homebrews in the future. Probably when Nintendo stops supporting the Wii U

Hello! I have experience modding the Wii and the Wii U. At this current time, the only real "stable" homebrew on the Wii U is the homebrew channel on Wii mode. It essentially acts exactly the same as the Wii's homebrew channel. It also does not have access to more or less anything Wii U, it only has access to Wii hardware, not the enhanced hardware of the Wii U. So sadly, it's not really a step up from emulating on the Wii.

I am somewhat familiar with Nintendont. Sadly however it's a project that will take a lot of time. The Wii U does NOT have all the guts of a gamecube like the Wii did. The reason why the Wii could play gamecube is because it had all the chips of a gamecube onboard, so it wasn't emulating gamecube. Sadly though, the Wii U does not have said chips, and its graphics processor is a bit different, so any gamecube games that work with Nintendont are emulated and thus you are not going to get 1:1 support until the emulation is worked upon.

In short: not all gamecube games are going to work 1:1. You are also going to run into an issue with running the ISOs off of disks since the Wii U uses a proprietary disk format. At this time the list of games is quite large that work, however there is not 100% compatibility. We're still a long ways away from that.
