gaming Can the Teen rating be considered family friendly?

There's PG-13 Movies like Ant Man and Pixels getting advertised on kids networks, and they're considered family friendly. Parents do take their kids to these movies. But the T rating be considered family friendly too? I've played several Teen rated games like Valkyria Chronicles that were actually very tame, and well, teens are family too. Now obviously this doesn't apply to every T rated game, I certainly wouldn't give an 8 year old InFamous or the Batman Arkham games, but can certain T rated games be considered family friendly like certain PG-13 movies?

Yeah, it's like Discord said, there's been a shift in what's acceptable for young'ns as time passes. I haven't had too much contact with children under 12 since leaving that age since I'm not much of the babysitter type, so I don't have the experience first hand to be sure what exactly things are like down there. But everything's dependent on the parents and the values imparted. For me R rated stuff was already cool to watch at 8-10 and I didn't grow up especially screwed up!

I'd say absolutely. There are many teen rated games that really don't have any major obscenities. Some may come close but often there really is not enough 'bad' stuff in Teen rated games to warrant worry. Terraria is Teen rated but that game is very tame overall even with the blood and slightly dark themes. A game like Uncharted 2 could be on the thin line because it takes the PG-13 movie approach and has different things like violence, innuendos, severe instances of swearing and violent undertones, that one could be debatable. It really depends on the game.

Me personally, I would consider most Teen games to be family friendly. Most Teen games don't take many things too far at all.

Twilight Princess and Super Smash Bros Melee/Brawl are a couple of games I think suit "family friendly" T-rated games. Valkyria Chronicles is another good one, and I think the earlier Final Fantasy games(IV-X) fit the bill too (except Tactics and maybe VII)
