Isn't having the same ruler for over 1000 years old a bit excessive?

Well you know Celestia isn't really perfect. Canterlot was taken over by Chrysalis once and she couldn't catch a whiff of this and proceeded with the wedding, in fact she ignored the one pony that had it figured out when she realized her mistake, she should know Cadence way more than any pony she couldn't figure out there was something wrong with her when it was her foalsittee that figured it out. When the enemy comes right to her on a platter Celestia gets her flank kicked. Then let's talk about Discord, why was she doing nothing, she couldn't even show an effort to help Ponyville by sending magic casting unicorn soldiers or whatever as reinforcements, in fact she doesn't seem to send reinforcements at all while she stayed in her castle shaking in her horseshoes while Ponyville was turned upside down, heck maybe she could have at least sent soldiers to evacuate the ponies in Ponyville what was she letting them stay there as sacrifices to distract Discord was that her plan? Then finally there's Tirek. When Princess Celestia had that much years to figure out how powerful alicorns could of been vs. say Tirek whom she also had fought before she could have just had all four alicorns just fight Tirek right there (because if Twilight with all four alicorn powers can stand equal to Tirek they didn't have to have given up their powers in the first place IN FACT THEY COULD OF BEATEN TIREK BEFORE HE ABSORBED DISCORD'S POWERS AT THE THRONE ROOM), Celestia still couldn't figure that out and she also had all the ponies lose their magic and Tirek took over, kind of a bad image for Celestia to have been taken over completely not just Ponyville or Canterlot this was all ponies. And King Sombra is also a result of Celestia not paying attention.

 

Also back before Twilight and Co. why was there so much trouble in Equestria? Would a perfect and just ruler allow those events to happen without prevention? Even with Celestia had the EoH under her control there was more trouble in the past than there is now.

 

Bottomline Celestia makes tons of mistakes and she is not perfect she is just unchallenged.

Ponies want alicorns as leaders, because they have no bias against any of the three races(hopefully). An unicorn leader could give unicorns preference, a pegasus could move the capitol to Cloudsdale or a earth pony could prefer his own kind.

 

Cadance runs the Crystal Empire, Twilight is a beginner and Luna doesn't give the impression to be a better ruler as Celestia. My 2 cents.

Celestia is still ruler because she has 2 firm opinions

1) If it ain't broke, don't fix it

2) If it doesn't annoy the pony who raises the sun & the moon, it ain't broke

 

IRL, I've read that the same dynasty has reigned in Japan for over 2000 years.  Up until the Japanese lost WWII, the emperor was supposed to be divine, they had to agree he wasn't as part of the peace treaty.

There are a lot of things that go good for people but not for all people. The way to fix that problem? You fix it.
