Help drawing ponies?

Solar Eclipse

Recommended Posts

Sorry, I wasn't sure where this should go.

I am trying to start up something similar to an audio drama series, unfortunately I don't have any drawing experience. Can someone please give me some direction as to what I can do to start drawing ponies fast? Again, sorry if this post is in the wrong section. Thank you for reading.

@@Solar Eclipse, if you're set on doing it yourself and not relying on other people... basically, the more time/effort you shove into drawing, the faster you're likely to improve--so long as you're challenging yourself and striving to improve/learn and ensuring you're taking steps to do so. I'd recommend drawing everyday, sometimes from examples, sometimes from real life, and sometimes just from your head (ideally trying to recreate, reposition, or play with things you've worked with in the former cases). It'll take a good bit of time to develop a skill with drawing, but the more time you devote to it, the faster you're likely to improve.  :) I would also recommend looking around for tutorials, art techniques, or videos where you can watch people draw--basically absorb as much of it as you can, and ideally try to apply it (even if it's not directly related to ponies). I've often heard the advice of like, always carrying a sketchbook around with you. If you have a little bit of spare time, open it up and draw (usually, it's been mentioned that you should try drawing what's around you).

For ponies in particular, I'd suggest holding some study sessions where you piece together their anatomy and proportions, and try to adapt it into your own understanding--then see if you can replicate and use it for different poses and such.

It's a relatively long process though to get good at drawing. No escaping that.

Although, there's also the faster route of just contracting someone who has already sunk a huge amount of time into practicing a skill with art, but sometimes that can be a touch unreliable, and you really have to work around the fact that they're likely doing a good chunk of work for you for free (or, paying them to compensate for their time/skill).  Though, sometimes you still get awesome people offering such.  :)

There are plenty of great sketches on deviantART that give models of ponies. Like this.

Overall, I'd say just practice. If you're trying to emulate the style of the show, try a few traces. If not, I'd say as long go with whatever style you like. And ALWAYS be prepared to erase and redraw.
